“Excellent food but service could be improved”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2009

We ate at Simpsons last night based on the good reviews. The food was absolutely excellent. OUr favourite restaurant is Le Manoir in Oxford and the food at Simpsons was on a par. The only thing that let the evening down slightly was the quality of the service. Staff were very polite but so rushed! No sooner had we finished a course they were whipping our plates away. I had literally just put my fork down from the main course and the palte was taken away and the dessert menus bought. We had to ask them to leave us for a bit to enjoy the remaining wine. Again, as soon as I had finished my glass the waiter took my galss away and I had to remind him there was more in the bottle - he said he thought I was driving which I thought was a bit random! And we weren't quite sure why they brought the petit fours to go with coffee out with the dessert - why not the coffee? They need to go to the Manoir to see how top quality service is done. But all in all, a lovely restaurant and excellent food.

Dining at Simpsons for the second time in the last few weeks I had decided I would combine the pleasure of an excellent meal with the pleasure of being able to go to bed with no worries about the amount of alcohol I had drunk or having to drive 30 miles home on a very cold December night.
So after dinner and wine we went upstairs to the Colonial bedroom ( one of the 4 they have ) and enjoyed the comfort of excellent accommodation.
Parking is right outside the front door.,The hotel itself is on the corner of a road junction but fortunately in a residential part of Birmingham so by the time you get to bed traffic is minimal and likewise in the morning. In any case the room are fairly well insulated so we were not disturbed at all
The bedroom is a very good size with an ensuite bathroom . It has a very big kingsize bed . The bathroom has all the nice little touches you would expect from a boutique hotel e.g bathrobe, little bottles of various creams/oils ,slippers etc . The bath itself was just the right size. The towel rail was very very hot .
You are provided with a lovely bowl of fruit and bottles of water but as a previous reviewer has mentioned no tea making facility which is a disappointment.
Breakfast is limited to continental either in your room or downstairs in the restaurant , we had in room.
We left feeling very happy and relaxed

  • Liked — Convenience of being able to go to bed after a convivial meal
  • Disliked — no tea making provision in room, towel rail very very hot

Having eaten at the restaurant many times, I've never had the pleasure of staying until now. The food doesn't disappoint, the service doesn't disappoint, the feel of the place is spot on, so the room had a lot to live up to.

The room excelled! A super sized and extremely comfortable bed - individually decorated. My room was Orientally themed for instance, and a colleague had different furnishings.

A bowl of fruit on arrival; a complimentary bottle of still and sparkling water on the side - although no tea / coffee making facilities.

the room didn't have a trouser press though; but then again, I guess this type of boutique hotel is not really for the business traveller.

Located about 1/2 mile from the "Five Ways" end of Broad Street, it could be considered a little out of the way, but in all honesty a 25 minute leisurely stroll will take you to lots of shopping, and the night life starts within 10 minutes walk.

The bathroom was shower only, but it was a big shower unit with sunflower head and a hand held part too. Moulton Brown toiletries, masses of towels and a dressing gown on the door.

TV was probably a bit too small for the size of the room, but came with freeview. The room also had a number of local magazines on display.

Coming here for dinner, then wandering upstairs suitably fed and watered would be an excellent night.

The night porter cannot provide you with drinks should you want a night cap which I found a little odd, and the breakfast was frankly disappointing. A couple of croisants and some jam. To say the restaurant is one of the best in the city, they really let themselves down here. Also, in the night, the staff were not exactly the quietest.

There are not many rooms here, but if you don't want to stay in a typical Broad Street box hotel room and are willing to take those extra few minutes to your journey; you will be pleasantly surprised

Simpsons has been one of my favourite restaurants in Birmingham since it opened. It has sleek service, fantastic decor, but the main reason to go there is the food. It is absolutely stunning. I am a foodie and was charmed by the food instantly, my boyfriend is a pie and chips man and even he understands Simpsons.

Well, he took me to stay the night for my birthday last year. They were amazing to us, discreet polite service, we were made to feel so special, it was lovely to be a resident in such a select place for the night.

We stayed in The Oriental Room. It was well furnished, an AMAZING shower, huge bed. Breakfast was served to us in our room and was also very good.

Fantastic place for a special night.

  • Liked — The service and food
  • Disliked — If you were a tourist and wanted to walk into Birmingham city shops etc it's a bit far out..

We came to celebrate my husband's 30th birthday and had a wonderful experience. We arrived late afternoon on a hot and muggy day and were greeted by an extremely professional Front of House Manager. She showed us to our room and said that if we would like tea or coffee she could bring some to us or have it ready for us in the lounge.

Simpsons is fundamentally a restaurant but it has 4 individually decorated / designed bedrooms. So when we arrived, there were veyr few people around given that the restaurant was not open for business as yet. However we did not feel we had arrived at a closed establishment or that staff had to go out of their way (restaurant preparations) and greet us which I can imagine could be the case if customer service was not a priority. Instead we were made to feel very welcome.

The room was impressive. - we had opted for the Oriental room - one of the cheaper ones but did not feel as if we had opted for 2nd best. There was a large bed, red walls and lots of lacquered furniture. There was also free mineral water (Evian and Badoit) and a lovely fruitbowl with strawberries, grapes, plums, bananas and oranges. They had even provided side plated, napkins and knives!

The bathroom had a huge walk in shower with a showerhead as big as a dinner plate as well as a hand held nozzle and something that swished water out around your ankles! There were bathrobes and slippers, Molton Brown toiletres and lots of fluffy towels.

We ventured to the lounge for our tea which was lovely and relaxed for a short while before returning to our room to get ready for dinner. At this time we felt like we owned the place being the only ones around! It was a lovely feeling!

By the time we returned, the restaurant was beginning to gain a life of its own and we no longer felt like lord and lady of the house! But we were treated very well and introduced to our waiter and sommelier who were fantastic throughout the course of the evening. We opted for the tasting menu and asked the sommelier to put together different wine for each course. Certainly not a cheap option but the food and wine were so great that I was more than happy to hand over the cash!

Food, wine and service was incredible - an extremely memorable experience. The restaurant was very busy that evening yet we still felt as if we were well looked after. When we returned to the room, our bed had been turned down and we had some beautiful hand made chocolates waiting for us. My one comlpaint is the lack of air conditioning in the rooms as it was such a hot night. There was a fan which improved things slightly but nothing beats air con on a sweaty July night!

Breakfast was brought to our room - freshly squeezed orange juice, big silver pots of tea, fresh berries and accompznying creme fraiche and freshly baked pastries and croissants - wonderful.

When checking out. the price was the equivalent to a cheap package holiday for one (!) but was not a bitter pill to swallow given the quality of the food, the wonderful and attentive service and the experience. The Front of House Manager had even thought to print off a copy of the tasting menu we had to take home with us which was a lovely gesture.

This is not something we would do often and would have to save the pennies for but certainly something I'd happily save towards.

  • Liked — Service and thoughtful touches such as turndown, chocolates, fresh fruit, mineral water
  • Disliked — Lack of air con
