“Advertises as a 'Cocktail Lounge' but doesn't deliver a good one!”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

Have tried here twice now, with different friends. The cocktails are not worthy of the prices charged. The Bank in Birmingham and Hotel Du Vin are far superior. The service in the bar, and outside on the terrace is terribly slow, although there are very few guests at the moment. The venue is beautifully kitted out, and would make a superb party place, but the manager needs to get the service sorted, the cocktail list improved and more attentive staff employed before I will be travelling there again.

“Pretentious, extortionate, customer service was severely lacking!”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

This hotel could learn a great deal from its neighbour Simpsons, which it could be argued, is the most exclusive restaurant in the region. Simpsons are a reasonable price and go out of their way to make you feel very comfortable and well looked after; impeccable customer service.

I was so disappointed because I was really excited about finding a cocktail place in this area. The cocktails were quite good, I'd expect them to be perfect at £9 price point. However, order a cocktail rather than a gin and tonic which is also £9 to get closer to your money's worth!

The Edgbaston is almost impossible to find. I don't know if this makes them feel more exclusive and cool but when your taxi has to keep driving up and down the road it's not a great start to the evening. There are too many staff running around not getting very much done and the service is often chaotic. That been said the individual staff members are very nice and professional. When we were there for a party they hadn't kept track of tabs and didn't seem to have any systems in place. I don't know if they are still new to the industry but confirming bookings and their general organisation is lacking. The manager/proprietor is obnoxious.

The decor is nice if a little in your face. However, we also saw a cockroach or perhaps a beetle on our way out but it's not to say it hadn't come in from outside. Still a bit gross.

Spend your money somewhere that appreciates it and doesn't think itself too good to look after its guests.

“Ruined a 30th Birthday Party!”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

We attended a friend's 30th birthday party at this venue on Saturday 21st June and the venue itself looks very impressive, the serving staff were very friendly and helpful and we were all having a great time. Unfortunately the Management did not stick to the agreement and provide a tab for each party member so that the spend of the collective party could go against the minimum spend for the room. Therefore, the Manager (or Deputy Manager I believe) could not work out how much the party had spent on drinks (although with the bubbly flowing and a packed room I can almost guarantee that we had reached minimum spend by this point - approx 10.30pm and we would have remained there for the rest of the evening). The person in charge became extremely rude and obnoxious about this, despite the issue arising because they had made an error and failed to give out the tabs that they said they would. He behaved in an increasingly impudent way towards the birthday girl as she explained that the error was on their part and that we'd all been drinking there all night and were planning to continue to do so. He was also very unpleasant to other family members including her father and the episode resulted in the whole party having to leave the venue and find another venue in which to continue our celebrations. Needless to say that the birthday girl was extremely upset and disappointed by the whole affair and that none of the guests will ever return to The Edgebaston again. I most certainly would not recommend this venue.

“What a farce!”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

Quality cocktails, maybe. Quality customer service, definitely not. Was here last night for my friend's 30th birthday party & having asked for the air conditioning to be turned on in our basement room to cool it against the 25'C heat outside, her father was rudely told to shove off & then got a grilling about whether we'd met the minimum spend of the evening. We obviously had, given the size of the party & the number of bottles of over-priced prosecco & cocktails consumed (not to mention the number of tabs we had on the go!), but rather than listen to reason, the manager decided the only sensible course of action would be to lock himself in his office & call the police. It's a pity that an establishment like this that calls itself a boutique cocktail lounge does not have the management in place to match.

“Don't mix hotel rooms with cocktail bars underneath”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

We were booked into this brand new boutique hotel by our daughter as a birthday treat. She asked that our room be cooled down before arrival and this was assured, plus she was told that our room had been upgraded to a "suite". On our arrival the room was anything but cool, window was opened for us and the Receptionist promised to adjust the AC. Nothing happened and we don't think they had AC. It was not a suite but a nicely appointed bedroom with ensuite but with a ridiculous bath in the bedroom taking up space. We went to bed very tired at about 11 pm to the thumping of beat music from the bars below. Two phone calls to complain to the Receptionist later, the music was turned off at 1pm. We spent a restless night with the window wide open and traffic outside. Also a bright green light in the ceiling shone down on us which we were told next day was a smoke alarm but we have not come across one like that in any other hotel. To cap it all our bathroom experience in the morning was of cold tap and shower water and a toilet seat that swivelled sideways when you sat on it!! And our "pleasurable" experience was rewarded with a bill for £150. Only saving grace was a reasonable continental breakfast in the room.
