“Good, but........”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

My wife and I found ourselves at Jyoti for lunch after finding our restaurant of choice for that day, the Raja Monkey closed. We were slightly apprehensive having never eaten at a vegetarian Indian restaurant before. For people like us there is a set menu but we decided to be brave and choose for ourselves with some slightly mixed results.

Reassuringly most of the other diners obviously had family links with the Indian sub-continent.

We began by sharing Mixed Bhajiya (small) 6 assorted fritters with apple or tamarind sauce.
£2.75 and Samosas Deep-fried potato, onion and green pea parcel. 2 pieces served with salad and chutney £1.65. We also had a couple of Jyoti Special Masala Papadom
£0.80

The samosa's and papadom's were good and the bhajiya pleasantly flavoursome but created a test for us to determine the herbs and spices they contained. The only downside was that they were very filling and when the mains came we regretted our earlier gluttony.

For mains my wife had Jyoti Special Masala Dhosa Large rice pancake with filling of potato, onions, pineapple and mild peppers served with mixed Vegetable sauce and coconut chutney
£5.50 She enjoyed this meal but was defeated by the quantity.

I had Chef's Choice Thali Three curries of Chef's choice, 4 puris, daal, rice, raita, pickle, papadum, onion bhajiya and rasmalai £10.95. It was excellent.

Jyoti do not sell alcohol in any form and we drank tap water, and orange juice and a pineapple juice.

We learnt a little, enjoyed a lot, were puzzled a bit, here and there found the food not exactly to our taste but we were not put off by the vegetarian menu. It was also outstanding value.

All the above was the good news. The bad news was that after the meal my wife visited the toilets. She was not impressed by the cleanliness. My wife is fussy about such things but notwithstanding that she said she would not have eaten there is she had known before hand. This is something that Jyoti needs to get a grip of.

“Veggie heaven”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

Love love love this place - often when we eat Indian food, I find myself restricted to just cut vegetables in different sauces, with very little flavour or excitement. The range here is brilliant and it takes me forever to chose. The Pani Puri is an absolute must.

“Who needs Meat”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Six of us went to Jyoti a week ago on a Friday. Service so friendly, food really good that one of the group said "Do we need to eat meat again?" We had a range of dishes from samosas which were so fresh and crispy, chana curry rich and depth of flavour, special thali, Great variety and value for money. Looking forward to the next time
