“Don't believe the gripes!”
Reviewed 3 December 2009

My wife & I, along with another couple, stayed here for 2 nights on the 27th & 28th of November.
Having read some rather unsavoury reviews we approached our stay with some trepidation,
our worries were dispelled very quickly!

Parking spaces were plentiful on the premises & the daily charge of £3.50 was incredibly cheap. Some hotels in the area that I looked at before we booked were charging up to £25 for subsidised parking in a "nearby" NCP car park.

At check -in the Receptionist was very helpful & efficient & we were in our rooms within 10 minutes.
We were staying in one of the "inside" rooms (this hotel is constructed in the form of a "ring" so some rooms face into the circle while some face out).
As has been mentioned in previous reviews these rooms are a bit on the small side. However, there was still room for a large double bed(queen?) a very good sized bathroom, a good amount of storage space & a good sized desk.
The room was very nicely furnished in a contemporary style & spotlessly clean.
One thing you don't get with the inner rooms is a view, but we weren't there to sit in the room looking out of the window!

Because we had booked 2 nights B&B we were also given dinner on one of our nights as part of a deal.
We weren't expecting much as this was a "freebie" but were very pleasantly surprised,we were given a 3 course meal with several choices of each course & they were all absolutely delicious, our compliments to the chef!
The buffet breakfast was also of a very good quality, however, on the Sunday morning of our stay the staff did seem to be a little overwhelmed by the number of guests & it did seem to take quite a while for some of the items to be replenished. We all still got a very good breakfast so that is a very minor gripe.

This hotel is situated quite a way from the City centre, a good 15-20 minute walk, but buses stop outside very frequently,we never had to wait more than a few minutes, and they all stop in the city centre.Taxis are also very reasonably priced.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we could not fault this hotel & would definitely recommend it to others.

stayed in this hotel on a organised trip.after reading many bad reviews i was expecting the worst, but we couldn't have asked for a nicer hotel.the staff were pleasant and efficient .the rooms were tastefully furnished and not at all pokey or stuffy! the only problem we had were with the key cards.it took ages to gain access onto our floor let alone into the room! i would recommend anybody to stay in this hotel and will stay here myself in future should i need a base in birmingham again.

We booked into the hotel for a two night package with some friends. The package included an evening meal. We were up in Birmingham for the Twenty 20 finals day at Edgbaston on 15th August and we stayed Friday and Saturday night. We had our meal on the Friday night.

We read the reviews and were expecting the worst but we were very pleasantly surprised.

We upgraded to an outside room at a minimal cost and the room was at the top with a lovely view across Edgbaston reservoir. We told the hotel that my wife was a coeliac and needed a gluten free diet and the restaurant staff were wonderful, they got gluten free bread in for her and made her a special gluten free pudding. This has never happened before on our trips away. They had already marked up the menu to indicate which food my wife could have. The other staff were very friendly and the bar staff looked after us - well Sussex CCC won ! Parking in the tower is secure and the hotel have worked hard to improve their service.

We recommend that you stay there and upgrade to an outside room.

Stayed at this hotel as I knew where it was, just outside the city centre, so close enough but not in the middle of the action so to speak.

I had a meeting in Birmingham and as family live there we stayed from the 10th to the 12th July. Never ever again will we stay there.

The room was small and pokey. Its kind of a circle design and we had a room on the inside so the view we had was horrible, like being in a cell (I will upload photos soon). The curtains were disgusting, the windows hardly open and are old scabby metal windows. However the worst part about the room was the heat in the room. It was boiling, and there is no way of cooling it down. You can hardly open the windows and even when you do there is no air to come through as you are surrounded by other rooms in the circle and a dingy, dark view.

I will never ever stay at this hotel again. The room was bad enough but worse than this was the issue that we had with one of the workers on the front desk. He had seen myself and my partner come into the hotel earlier in the night and spoken with us about car parking so he knew who we were. We went to the room for a couple of hours and then I fell asleep. My partner had left her phone in my cousins car earlier in the day and he had said he would drop it back to her later in the day. He rang my phone whilst I was asleep and she answered and he said he was outside the hotel. She ran down to his car, picked up her phone and then tried to come back into the hotel. The man on front desk let her into the lobby (there is an intercom system) and then she realised that she had left the keycard in our room. I was fast asleep by now. She went to go in the lift but the guy on front desk asked for her key card. She said she had left it in the room, gave hi the room number and name on booking and he said no I cant let you upstairs. She rang my phone and couldnt get an answer as I was asleep. She got the guy to ring my room phone but again I didnt wake so he said there was nothing he could do. She was left on her own in the lobby for 45 minutes at 1am in the morning because this guy wanted to show his authority. I finally woke up and had to go downstairs to collect m crying girlfriend who was scared, freezing and tired. Absolutly ridiculous service from the hotel.

If you are staying in Birmingham avoid this hotel. Book early and you can get much better for your money. You can even get the Jurys for the same price!

Dear Sir
I would just like to respond to your comments, Menzies Strathallan has just undergone a 2m pound refurbishment, which finished in December 2008. As you were in one of the inner circle rooms your view would have been that of wall and windows although this is only noticable if you pull back the sheers to peer out, the windows are of a metal finish but can not be described as in your words scabby, nor the room be descibed as dingy as that would infer a lack of refurbishment.
I would also like to mention that on checking what we believe to be your reservation the room was only booked for one person which is why the member of night staff would not allow the person to have a key to the room and along with the young lady tried ringing you on the room and mobile phone, and after checking the CCTV at the time mentioned in your comments the young lady was not in reception for any longer than 15 minutes and was not at anytime crying.

Me and my boyfriend spent a weekend in Birmingham, choosing this hotel to stay in because we got a really good deal. Based on the reviews we didn't expect anything luxurious, actually quite the opposite- however we were pleasantly surprised. From the outside the hotel looks quite shabby, however inside the reception is pretty nice and the restaurant as well. The first three floors are for the car parking, we were accommodated in the fifth. Our room was tiny, but for the stay it was enough (bed, wardrobe, table, TV, kettle, iron). I think they made these small rooms from bigger rooms, the only thing is that the walls are really thin and you can nearly hear all the noises from outside/your neighbour. All was clean and shiny, nicely styled. The bathroom was nice too.
Just the view from the window was horrible, plus you could not properly open the window (just like 10cm--safety reasons??)- so I can imagine it can get pretty hot in the room when there is no air-conditioning.
Also, what didn't really work out so well were the electronic cards that you use to get into your room, they just worked after we tried it opening like 10times, and we weren't the only ones experiencing these difficulties. The staff told us we should hold the card longer in the machine, which didn't really help us.
The last thing was that the second day the lifts didn't work due to some technical difficulties, but we could use the service lift and the problem was solved in about 2 hours.
The staff was friendly, helped us a lot. The hotel is about 10minutes from the city centre using the bus (nr.9, 138,139 etc...)
Overall I would recommend this hotel, you get a fairly good deal for the money.
It's good especially for short stays and younger couples, who do not wish to stay in hostels sharing room with 10other people.

This hotel was built in the 70's and has not been refurbished or cleaned since. Our room was pokey, with dirty net curtains, stained walls and radiators, well worn carpet and the bathroom stank. We didn't even unpack as the small wardrobe smelt really bad. As for eating the hotel we didn't risk it. On a plus side the staff were friendly and the entertainment was good. But overall I just would not recommend this hotel to anyone no matter how good a deal you get!!

Dear Jamcar77

I notice that you stayed here last in August 07, Menzies hotels purchased this hotel in September 07 and during 2008 the company have spent in excess of 2 million pounds refurbishing the hotel to what is now a very high standard, the hotel now boasts a new contemporary look and warm and welcoming feel to it. I hope you take the opportunity to come back and see the changes that have taken place.

Staff at reception are always helpful and efficent. Gets busy when there are conferences on in Birmingham. The restaurant is a nice environment and good is of decent quality both for Dinner and Breakfast. I've had a single and double exec room, the single room is small but not too small and you do get a window. The car park is nice and easy to get a space and easy to jump in lift to room/ reception.
