I visited this pub because it is the oldest secular building in Birmingham the building didn't disappoint and we decided to have lunch I had the mini fish cakes with a bowl of skin on chips both were very good the staff are friendly and efficient

I stayed here for 2 nights on a hen party in July.

Pros - cheap, unique location, friendly staff, good shower, reaonsable cooked breakfast, spacious beer garden, cheap pub food

Cons - shared bathroom (wasn't a problem for us as we had all but 1 room). Springy and uncomfortable beds. No aircon and rooms upstairs very hot, had to sleep with curtains/ windows open which was noisy. Only cooked breakfast no cereal/ healthier choices and each day they didn't cook enough eggs for us so some people had to wait longer. They messed up our dinner booking (lost our pre-order and forgot fact time had been booked weeks before), we had to move it up an hour and the steak was overcooked

Go here if want something cheap & cheerful with friends. Don't stay if need a good sleep or want anything romantic!

Stayed here for just one night after a gig in Birmingham. Ate lunch from the bar and the food was fantastic, extremely tasty burger and good selection of beers. Our room was wonderful. We were lucky enough to get a lovely old four poster bed and the traditional style of the hotel runs throughout. We had a shared bathroom and this was also faultless. Excellent shower and very clean. Breakfast the next morning was tasty and served by pleasant staff. All in all a very good experience and we would be happy to return without hesitation if we find ourselves needing a place to stay in Birmingham again.

I had booked in for a few nights as on a business course, but after the first night I had to check out. The noise from the pub below wasn't too bad as was a Monday night, but the noise from the road outside was horrendous! Didn't get a wink of sleep.
Great breakfast though and staff very accommodating

I appreciate that this is meant to be 'alternative' accommodation, with many of the original features of the old building making it different from the standard fayre. Indeed, the rooms do feel authentic in that regard and do provide something different.

However, this is no excuse for the parts of the accommodation which should be modern and well kept being in such terrible disrepair. Toilets that wouldn't flush, with the handles practically hanging off. Scuffs and marks all over the bath. Windows which are falling apart. The dangerously loose stair-rail as you get to the top of the stairs. One of the rooms had a broken bed in. The ancient fan throwing out precisely zero air, even when turned up to its highest setting. Sorry to say, but I wouldn't recommend staying here because of points like this.

You can keep the place authentic and old in most aspects, but you cannot neglect basic hygiene and health and safety under the premise of authenticity. Every guest needs 21st century facilities, in at least some aspects of their stay, and I'm sorry to say this doesn't meet them. The points above are simply down to poor upkeep. Whose fault they are I have no idea, but they certainly need addressing.

I hope this information will be useful to those in charge, as it is intended constructively.

I had booked one night accommodation here for thursday the 28 of last month and on arrival i was told sorry we are fully booked and was sent to another hotel called the Paragon hotel which was a 15 minute walk away and had to make my own way over there with my bags in the rain and i had checked and confirmed my booking twice with the old crown.

The room was massive and full of history (well the whole pub is), I loved it!
But....it's on a main road which is noisy, late night taxis etc... and I think there was a lock in at the pub coz it was so loud with music.

The en-suite bathroom was lovely and the whole wonkiness of the room and hotel was fab.

The breakfast was good too!

I didn't see the ghost/ghosts! lol
