“As always fantastic”
Reviewed 24 June 2011

Dined here last week, we're regulars here and love it, they just seem to always get everything right.

Service and ambiance are excellent, though they do perhaps take themselves a little seriously! And of course the food is always top notch.

“Great food and service but lack of choice at weekends”
Reviewed 21 June 2011

On a recent visit to the NEC, four of us decided to venture in to Birmingham to dine at Purnell's rather than eat in our chain hotel at the airport. The journey into Birmingham from the International station to Birmingham New Street is quick and efficient but finding Purnell's from the station if you are a stranger to the City is a little more tricky. Still, it's well worth the effort. We went on a Saturday evening (having booked many weeks in advance) and were disappointed to learn that there were only two fixed menus on offer on Friday and Saturday evenings - a £46 'Market' menu and the £75 'Tasting' menu. Unfortunately, the two men in our foursome were keen to try the 7 course tasting menu but the two ladies insisted that they could not manage it (and one does not eat meat - which figured in two of the tasting menu dishes). As the same menu has to be served to the entire table, we opted for the 4 course menu which did not include some of Glynn Purnell's most iconic dishes, such as his Monkfish Masala. Us men felt slightly cheated by this and found it most unfortunate that the a la carte menu was not available. It seems as though the menu on busy weekends has been designed for the convenience of the restaurant rather than the customer. The saving grace was that the excellent quality of the food we did have and the knowledgeable sommelier and attentive waitresses made up for the lack of choice on the menu.

“Outstanding food and an amazing experience - but all taken v seriously”
Reviewed 20 June 2011

I planned our 1st anniversary weekend away around going to Purnell's - we have both watched and admired Glynn Purnell for a few years on the TV so to go to his restaurant was a dream come true.

Glynn was in the lobby when we arrived - such a thrill. The maitre d that greeted us was ridiculously charming & good looking, the perfect French accent and I honestly expected his teeth to sparkle with a 'ding!' when he smiled. The food was out of this world, it met every single high expectation. I have never eaten anything like it, it was on another level. We were at our table for 2 hours and weren't hurried off, and as a (paid for) anniversary treat they gave us an additional course, the famous egg-custard served in eggshells - this was amazing.

Although we had an amazing night and one to remember, I was dissappointed by a few things:

On weekends, you are restricted either to the tasting menu or the 'market menu' which gives 2 choices per course. As a vegetarian, the tasting menu was no good and I was restricted to the only non-meat option on the other one, giving me no choice. However, I'm not fussy and I'm sure everything on the menu is out of this world.

The staff were really pleasant but were hesitant and awkward - a world away from the suave, confident and charming waiters you usually have at restaurants like this. They announced each dish, listing the ingredients, but with soft un-confident voices and strong accents it was often hard to understand what they were saying.

And finally, it was a very different experience than we expected. On the TV, Glynn is a serious chef but his character is lively, fun and full of personality - and I expected that to translate to his restaurant. However, we found it to be a very serious restaurant - not pretentious, but a fine dining restaurant that focusses solely on the food.

All in all, an experience to remember forever, but a different one than we expected!

“A wonderful experience”
Reviewed 15 June 2011

The most incredible culinary experience. We went for the taster menu and were thrilled from start to finish. Found the decor a little peculiar, but perfectly comfortable. Atmosphere was good, helped by the warm welcome and fine service you get from the staff. A fantastic treat.

“An outstanding experience of taste & service”
Reviewed 9 June 2011

We went to Purnells for the second time, but the first time since being awarded his first star. I can safely say that this is the best meal my taste buds have had the pleasure of tasting! Glynn himself was there and I found the staff to be really plesant and not 'stuck up' like some restaurants can be. We were made to feel very welcome and treated as top noch guests. We had teh 8 course taster menu and a bottle of Chille Rose Wine. Each of the 8 course where outstanding, I couldnt believe that here were so many wonderful flavours in one mouthful! Glynns 10-10-10 egg was fabulous for the GBM followers! We were there for 4 hours and had a great night, if only we could afford to eat there all the time!
