“Value's a relative thing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2014 via mobile

Second time at Purnells. This time we all went for the 'Reminisce' menu and we're glad we did as this was a level above even what we had last time . I could finally tell my partner I'd had 'Emotions of cheese and pineapple'. Cheese and pineapple on edible sticks in a watercress velouté. Great start but nothing could prepare you for haddock with cornflakes, monkfish masala or a truly sublime beef carpaccio. New twists on homely food finished off with rhubarb with rhubarb and the best creme brûlée you will ever taste. 65 quid a head just for the food may sound a lot and it is but it's an experience you will remember. They still do a cheaper set lunch menu too.

“Excellence personified”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2014

This is not the place to go if you are on a budget . But it is certainly the place to go if you want to be indulged. Great food, fantastic preparation, staff are excellent. Wines are very good, expensive of course. You will leave here with wonderful food memories.
This restaurant is tops for me in Birmingham.
Pity I can't afford to attend regularly.

“A wonderful lunch”

Visited for the first time the other week and had the tasting menu. Every course was delicious especially the monkfish masala and the rhubarb dessert. Service was great and we'll back soon.

“Nearly faultless”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014

I'd enjoyed the tasting menu at Purnell's a few years ago and love his food and personaility when he appears on tv so thought it was time to pay another visit.

This time we managed to grab a quick caht a photo at the signing session for his new book 'Cracking Yolks & Pig Tales' which is well worth a read, not just for the recipes but for some of the stories that accompany them.

After purusing the menus over an aperitif we selected the Now Menu - 12 courses of genius.

There was theatre, visually stunning dishes, food I've never tasted or think to taste before all accompanied by great service in an atmosphere that was classy but not stuffy.

The Pigs' head ragout and crunchy pork was stunning, the Brixham turbot - honey pickled beetroot - smoked eel out of this world and I won't spoil the surprise but the mint choccy chip tasted as good as it looked.

We selected, wioth help from the sommellier, a very good bottle of white to go with the menu and a couple of glasses of sweet wine with the desserts.

Of course it's not cheap but the quality is very very good.

The only minor niggles were that there was a piece of crab shell in the Crab bisque with Cornish crab and toasted sweetcorn which also seemed to have had a major overload of lemon and the toasted sweetcorn was toasted to a crisp. Also no one asked if I would like the optional cheese course and I had to ask about accompanying wines for the desserts.

However, they were minor niggles and I would recommend paying Purnell's a visit if you are lucky enough to afford it for a special occasion.

“An evening for the Memory Box”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2014

Our family and friends had paid for an evening at Purnells, as a Golden Wedding gift last August. We decided to leave it a few months as something to very much look forward to and went last night, 30th May. We put ourselves in the hands of the charming and efficient Maire d' who advised which of the taster menus to have. We were presented with twelve clever, creative, mind blowingly excellent dishes served by courteous, knowledgeable and pleasant staff who were attentive but discreet - a credit to Purnells. Then .... Maitre d' brought us a menu signed by Glyn Purnell which delighted us. Then ..... Glyn came to have a chat with us and congratulate us on our Anniversary. He didn't just say Hello and rush off but stayed for a really good chat, natural and funny and happily posed for a photo. He deserves all success for the lovely atmosphere at his very tasteful establishment and for the total excellence of his food. We will always remember a very very special evening.
