I didn't use the gym. The hotel staff were very good but I don't think the hotel was value for money. The restaurant is expensive.I chose the hotel because of its location, close enough to the city centre and the availability of public transport .

Dear rgilbe500665,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review following your stay. I was sorry to learn that you didn't feel that the hotel represented value for money, the pricing is determined by demand and can fluctuate dependent upon the market place. Given the facilities and location suit your needs i hope that we may have the opportunity of welcoming you back when next visiting the area.

In the meantime

Kind regards

Paid £119 for a 2 night B&B stay with dinner on the first night. Village hotels are always modern and relaxing, as with most of them this one could do with a lick of paint here or there, but its still a lovely looking hotel. Rooms & beds lovely, although fan does not really help in hot weather. We asked for sheets and extra pillows from housekeeping which were delivered promptly. Pool and leisure facilities are great. Restaurant food was excellent, did not try the food in the bar but the drinks were a little pricey. Breakfast was good, especially the poached eggs. Staff are excellent, especially on reception who always served us with a smile. We had a lovely relaxing break, and for the price we paid I dont see better value for money anywhere!

Often disappoinment is rooted in unreasonable expectation, but I think not in this case. I should have read the "average", "poor" and "terrible" reviews before booking. There are several points picked up there that seem to recur, as do the management responses which, frankly, seem more like going through the motions, rather than genuinely taking notice. Anything less 'village like' would be hard to imagine - this is a large hotel in a business park - but let's start with £140 for a basic 'room only' one night stay, which seemed a lot. Our arrival at the D.I.Y check-in (if you know how to work it) which is deeply impersonal and, in our case, manned by someone who seemed to feel that our lack of facility with the technology was 'sad'. As it happens, the technology let her down too (ha ha) but it didn't prevent her trying to 'upsell' a club room, dinner, use of the spa etc. We found the furnishing of the standard double room, frankly, 'strange'. The unsupportive, contract quality, mattress was very low - for older people hard to get into and out of. The narrow space between the bed foot and dressing table meant that if anyone wanted to use the (only) chair at the dressing table the other person was 'marooned' on the other side of the bed. Why not 2 chairs, there is enough space? Tea and coffee...only 2 tea bags (i.e. one each)? The room was clean, but the bathroom was NOT (I took photos) and needed a thorough going over, including the walls. The shower screen (signs referring to the curtain still there) allowed water to run all over the floor. Signs worried us about the possibility of burning ourselves in the shower from hot water, but no guidance on how to regulate it. There was plenty of hanging space, an iron and ironing board, but nowhere to put / empty / repack our case other than on the floor. We couldn't see the emergency exit route or stairs marked (maybe our fault). When we checked out, nobody asked how we found our stay, just "We'll send your invoice by e-mail", which might have avoided this review. It is what it is. Had we had any choice, we wouldn't have chosen The Village, but we won't be back.

Room Tip: As far away from the bar / restaurant / function rooms as possible.

Dear GrumpyGlnvernes,

Disappointed to have received the review following your recent stay. It is clear that there was not much about the venue that you enjoyed from the price paid through to the facilities offered. That said we can have no excuses for poor housekeeping standards which will immediately be addressed. Automation within the hospitality industry is being developed at a rapid rate we are simply ahead of the times and soon your experience of DIY check in and emailed receipts will be the norm, which I guess for now means that we will not be first choice of hotel group when on your travels.
I do hope that at some point in the future your tarnished view will soften and we may have the opportunity of welcoming you back.

In the meantime

Yours sincerely

Although it is on a business park a couple of miles from the city centre, there are great transport links. There are frequent buses which run from outside the hotel and it is a 5 minute walk to Canley railway station. The hotel rooms are comfortable and well equipped and all the staff are pleasant and friendly. There is a bar, a grill and a Starbucks in the hotel, all of which we tried and enjoyed. The bar serves basic pub food, such as burgers and fish and chips, while the grill has more interesting meals. They are both a tad expensive, but convenient and we particularly liked the ambience in the grill on a quiet Sunday evening. The breakfast was a decent buffet. The place is busy, with a spa and fitness area, including a large pool. Events are catered for, with weddings a speciality and a toddlers birthday party when we were there. Free wifi and parking are also part of the deal. Downsides? there aren't many. We were disappointed that there was no cask beer in the bar - all the other hotels in the chain we have visited feature this. I also thought that the toddlers from the birthday party were allowed to run around screaming rather to much, but these are small issues. I we could get a good deal as we did this time we would be very happy to return and might check out the upgrade where we had the chance to make an offer for a better room and other perks.
