“Worried by reviews but turned out great!”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

Britannia specialises in budget, good value hotels and that's what we got. On Saturday, the hotel was packed, plus 500 guests for an Asian wedding reception, but the staff coped brilliantly. At Reception they were polite, friendly and efficient; at dinner they were the same, at breakfast they were the same! Book a time for dinner when you arrive and there will be little or no waiting (HINT: on your way out after dinner, book the time for the next night).
Quality of food good: choice of 2 starters, choice of 4 main courses - including a very generous carvery - and help yourself to a range of gateaux and cheesecakes. Breakfast buffet fine.
Room spacious, clean and comfortable. However, plumbing and plumbing noise is a problem and the doors (come on, Britannia, invest in some new quieter door-closers and your guests will sleep more contentedly; a relatively small amount of money for happier guests).
Overall, this is an attractive, spacious hotel with some amazing special offers. We enjoyed a restful, enjoyable couple of days and would recommend the Royal Court but (HINT 2!) go there expecting a budget hotel, not the Ritz, and you shouldn't be disappointed.

We booked a National Holidays 3 day package (Costwolds and Warwick Castle) for £99.00 per person which involved a two night stay at Royal Court Hotel which is on the outskirts of Coventry.

The hotel consists of a beautiful historic listed building which has had a large extention which is more modern in style added to it. The hotel is set in large landscaped grounds which make a fantastic backdrop for wedding photos. There is a pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna which we took full advantage off.

One of my main cristicisms is that the advertising material is misleading as it shows the original hotel and not the extention which makes up the bulk of the hotel. Anyone expecting to be staying in the original listed building may end up feeling a bit disappointed.

We stayed on a half board basis. Breakfast and dinner were served in sittings and if you go down at your allotted time there's not much waiting about. Breakfast was a self serve full English and contenental style which pretty much covered all the bases. Dinner was three courses with a choice of starter then a buffet style meat and vegetable combo. Vegetarian is also available on request. I had vegetable curry and rice one night and vegetable pasta the second night. There is also a reasonable choice of puddings.

Wine was served with dinner and we also got 4 drink vouchers.

Staff seemed friendly enought so no complaint there.

The hotel bedroom and bathroom were reasonably spacious, the bed was comfortable and bedding and towels were clean. The kettle could have done with being replaced and although clean the bedroom was in need of redecoration i.e paint was peeling away from the ceiling in the bathroom and some of the wallpaper in the bedroom had become discoloured and could have done with replacing.

The same was true for the common areas. There were loads of beautiful original features that made you feel like you'd gone back in time but there were also patches of recent plastering which had not been redecorated and sections of the hotel that could do with general repair and maintanance.

To sum up the trip was excellent value for money and the hotel would be fantastic if the owners gave it a bit of a cosmetic make over to restore it to it's former glory. Having said that I suspect that if they did so the price would go up somewhat as well.

We stayed at the Royal Court 14th - 18th March.
This was our 8th visit to the Hotel in the last 18months and
yet again we have no complaints.

Every member of staff are very helpful and friendly and
nothing is too much trouble.

We are looking forward to our 9th visit.

Well done to Heather and her Team.

We thought so what the reviews are bad, we'll make the most of it, we wouldn't do that again. Although the bed linen on top was clean the valance had clearly not been changed for a very, very long time. The shower would only bring in cold water although the bath did work. The food on the evening was the worst I have ever experienced in an hotel. The earliest we could book our table was 9.00 p.m. and it did look as if the food had been out for several hours, 'chef' very blunt. The free wine was warm. Tried to order some from the bar after dinner as thought may be kept better but choice was limited. No Pinot. No Cointreau.

Breakfast wasn't bad. We went out for whole day and decided to eat out as couldn't face meal there again even though it had been paid for in the deal, got back and room hadn't been serviced. They did offer to do it then or a change of room; we juts couldn't be bothered and settled for clean cups and new stock. Although cheap I have still put value as poor as you couldn't enjoy the food or the wine.

We checked into hotel at 6.30pm on Saturday with evening meal and breakfast as part of our package.

Staying at the hotel as an extra to our wedding stay we had at the Royal Court last November. On arrival greeted by excellent reception staff, who advised of where to go to our room and what time meals were served.

On arriving in our room, found all the mods and accessories as previous fabulous jacuzzi bath and shower. Emptied over night bags and then went down for meal, ordered food and within 15 minutes of ordering the food it arrived at our table with good sized portions and tasty too, exceptional customer service and prompt.

Then went out for evening and returned, remembering to put clocks forward! Woke and had a hearty breakfast and then checking out.

It is worth pointing out we would like to thank again sincerely for their assistance Chaz, Heather and all other staff we met again you are a credit to the hotel and key to the growing good reputation that this hotel is getting now with upgrades and renovations.

Many thanks

We stayed for one night on a dinner, bed and breakfast special package which included free wine and free use of the 'leisure facilities'. We were very dissapointed.

The whole place is very dated and in serious need of refurbishment. Our room was a good size, 'one of the better rooms' we were told at check-in, however it was not clean, the bed was not comfortable, and the in room wi-fi was nowhere to be found. The only wi-fi we found was in the reception area and this was quite slow, though it was free.

On arrival at 16:30 we were advised to give the restaurant a call and book a table for dinner as it 'can get quite busy'. We did call as soon as we got to the room to be offered 21:30 as the only available time. The alternative was to eat snacks at the bar, which we elected to do. Considering the comments from other guests about the standard of the restaurant, I think we did the right thing. As we ate in the bar, the queue for the restaurant built up and you had to feel sorry for those who hadn't tried to book at all - by that time the bar was also full and they were being offered 22:00 as the next available time for dinner. The food at the bar wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The free wine is a joke. Three mills 'reserve' red british wine - 1.99 from tesco.

Breakfast was ok, and actually not as busy as we'd expected, though we were quite early. The selection was reasonable and the staff were friendly. In fact, the one redeeming feature of the stay was that the majority of staff were quite nice. Considering the stress they must have to put with trying to satisfy guests in this chaotic hole, most did so well with a smile, with a couple of exceptions.

Checkout was painless enough, though they had mislaid a charge for £3.20 which we'd made to the room account at the bar. I explained this to them but was told they couldn't charge me without the paper from the bar, so I'd have to wait to see if it turned up. I'll have to wait and see whether I get a bill in the post.

Overall, a dissapointing stay at a dissapointing hotel. A little refurbishment would go a long way, as would a deep clean. Better organisation for the restuarant would really help, especially when offering DBB packages.

don;t be fooled by the cheap price, cheap is not always cheerful. Room was hrrid, uncomfortable bed, smelt of stale cigarettes. I had a jacuzzi bath which was a highlight. Breakfast dire, rubbery toast, awful.
no wi fi in rooms only in the bar, not good
Don;t do it!
