Saw this hotel on a friend's facebook page and knew it would make the ideal surprise one night stay for the end of a romantic getaway. Not the cheapest hotel in the area, but it must be unrivalled in character.
On it's website is exudes a classical and luxurious style (even to be surrounded by a real moat) which I can honestly say is actually surpassed in real life. If only the weather would have been slightly better so we could have walked outside more in the country park surroundings.
Room quality was luxurious in a quant old fashioned way (the period wardrobe was slightly disappointing to find it was a sort of MFI/Schreiber reproduction when opened- spoiled the effect), but the bath was probably the biggest I have ever soaked in, with lashings of hot water.
Staff were very friendly and helpful and my only slight disappointment in the whole stay was the restaurant, which not unexpectedly was quite expensive and while service and venue were excellent, the food quality did not really live up to expectations and certainly not the price.
I know other people who have raved about Coombe Abbey, and it certainly one of those places that should be on anyone's wish list at least once. Would I stay again? Due to the restaurant experience, probably not.More
