“Stopover thank god”

Awful simply awful, the worst "hotel" we have ever stayed in. Don't even consider it even on a budget. Rooms awful, bar area was freezing cold, food was the nail in the coffin.

Where to start... car park doubles a long stay airport parking so no spaces. Receptionist was rude and hadn't heard of egencia so tried to turn me away despite me showing a booking receipt (resolved when i mentioned egencia were the business arm of expedia). The room was freezing, had mould on the ceiling and despite being five floors up suffered road noise. To top it off the toilet and bath made dropping noises all night.

We were attending Spring Fair at the NEC & found this hotel online with reasonable prices as opposed to the over inflated prices in & around the NEC & Birmingham Airport. At 1st glance the hotel looked ok, on arrival it was a different story. The building looked to be more akin to a regional office of a large company or the regional Police HQ!. It was dark & rainy & blowing a gale, the car parking area is poorly lit & some guests parking left a lot to be desired!. The entrance to reception is appalling the automatic doors struggled to open properly & when they did they barely closed creating what could only be described as vortex conditions with the wind howling through. The Reception area/ lounge area was dowdy & dated still some what stuck in the late 70's in terms of decor & furnishing. We checked in & got given an old fashioned door key! No card entry system here. There are lifts to all floors however the lift lobby area looked more like it belonged in an office block with an open styled staircase, there were 3 lifts although one of didn't appear to be in use? Inside one of the lifts the emergency phone was missing & the door to its holder was hanging off!!. We booked a smoking room which nowadays is the exception rather than the rule, the room was dowdy & not completely clean, previous cigarette ash on the carpet!! There were signs of equipment being removed such as what appeared to be a trouser press being removed & screws left in the wall & a dirty tide mark where it once was, also signs of the head board being replaced again a dirty tide mark of where the previous head board was, the furniture has most definately seen better days for example the small soft chair seemed to have lost some support at the back,an old style 'Round' 3 pin plug socket still in the wall! Are there any British electrical products that still have 3 round pins on them? I somehow doubt it!. Also the ceiling light cover had dead flies in it yes it was a smoking room but that doesn't excuse a lack of general housekeeping & maintaining, in the bathroom the sink taps had list their hot & cold symbols, when turning on the shower the shower head dribbled until we discovered that you have to manipulate the head itself, in modern hotels the shower is usually quite powerful in this particular hotel it's not!. Also no towelling bathmat in the Bathroom we had to use a hand towel to put down so we didn't slip on the tile floor, I would of thought in today's litigious society to have bathmat for use on the floor was a given, on the ceiling were signs of nicotine & moisture mixing dirty brown stains!. The bed was also not the most comfortable either. So to breakfast, the dining area was very basic which led into a 'Function' room this area was awful the curtains were hanging off their rails the dining tables looked again to be more at home in a training/ meeting room with metal legs & mixed together, there were what looked like two radiators that were blocked by a tired piece of furniture at one end & a stack of broken chairs at the other!! The main dining area & the 'function' room were accessed from the reception area so each time the doors opened one experienced an Arctic blast through, in fact the whole breakfast experience was not nice at all the sub-zero temperature left one with blue hands!! Hence turning blue at breakfast, when we asked a member of staff about it we were informed that the heating was broken & had been for sometime & there had been no attempt to get it repaired.
To be honest we hadn't researched the Britannia Hotel group but it seems to me that this company are more interested in their profit margins rather than the comfort of their guests & the morale of their staff. It may have been the case twenty to twenty five years ago that this particular hotel was the only one on the outskirts of Coventry but now there are two other chain hotels within spitting distance yet this hotel has failed spectacularly to keep up with progress!! It's only hope is for Britannia Hotels to close this place for six months or so & drag it kicking & screaming into the 21st century it needs totally gutting & refurbishing & not a 'sticking plaster' effort either. I would also challenge one of the directors of this chain to experience a night & breakfast in the next week or so so they can see for themselves how uncomfortable it is, but they won't, which is the reason for this review.

Was never sure if I wanted to stay in an Ice hotel, but sitting in the reception area and bar in my coat and scarf, just about warm, like the radiators!!! Staff friendly but just talked about how cold they were!
Room ok, price of bottle of wine which would usually cost Β£5 in supermarket was Β£14:50!!
Food ok. Bargain price for transfer to airport, Β£2.50 each person each way.
Good price for leaving the car here for 2 weeks.

Stayed here as part of a national holidays coach trip. The outside looks like a neglected block of flat & the inside isn't much better. I stayed in 818 it was freezing, despite putting the radiator on when we got there, as it kept turning off. I ended up sleeping in my pjs & a jumper & 2 quilts. The walls were damp & you could see they had just painted over the patches. My sisters room next door was a disgrace....peeling wallpaper, mouldy ceiling & such large damp patches that could be poked through with your fingers. This room should not have been given to anyone it was a health risk. It was a particularly cold & windy night when we stayed & the whole of the public areas seemed to have no heating. My 3year old sat in her coat in the dining area & was complaining she was to cold as it was like a wind tunnel. Food wasn't great, rice was like rice pudding & there was hardly anything out when our dinner time came (prob as we are a coach party & you are often treat like 2nd class citizens) staff looked miserable & we were constantly searching for cutlery & napkins etc...as they didn't seem to clear & reset tables. This hotel seems to be in the middle of nowhere so if you don't like the food there isn't anywhere to get anything else. Plus point, wifi in bar area......although was far to cold & windy to even sit in there. We ended up huddled in my sisters room (as they got moved from the mouldy one) as it was warmer than ours on the 6th floor. I've been to some budget hotels in my time for Β£30 a night & they have been 100 times better than this place.....& to think they charge Β£100 a room on some nights. Don't go here if you have a choice, it needs a full refurb & to really rethink the organisation of the dining area & put the heating on in winter.......! The poor older folk who stay here on these coach trips will get very ill if they have to be in those conditions. I am writing a complaint to national holidays to......disgraceful!!

Despite previous reviews we stayed here when we visited the Spring Fair at the NEC and found:
Friendly staff
Clean rooms and linen
warm rooms
lots of hot water
Comfy beds
Good breakfast
- its an older hotel but for the price you pay you couldn't ask or expect more.
we would stay here again.

Arrived to what looked like a building from a former communist country. The reception area is desperately dark, tired and dated and clearly hasn't been decorated for decades, if not since it was built. The receptionist was friendly enough but we were given a key instead of a swipe card which is pretty old school these days. After receiving the key returned to our car to collect our luggage and on trying to enter the hotel again, the automatic sliding doors at the entrance to the hotel jammed after opening just a few inches. Had to prize them open to get back in whilst being buffeted by a howling gale. Once finally in entered the lift which had the emergency phone ripped out and bare wires exposed.
The room itself at first glance didn't seem too bad but after a short while its short comings soon became apparent. The TV was an old tube TV relic from at least 10-15 yrs ago with a poor quality picture. Tried to get an update on a rugby match that was live on BBC but the picture was so poor that it was impossible to make out the score in the top left hand side of the screen. Later that evening I took a bath and had to summon up all my strength to turn the taps on and off. A wrench would have been useful in this scenario! A couple of hours later my partner attempted to take a shower only to find that the temperature was permanently fixed at molten lava temperature and was therefore too hot even if one was protected with a space shuttle heat shield. The next morning my partner tried to take another shower only to find that with the dial still locked in its position the shower was now raining icicles and would have been to cold even for a polar bear. The decor in the room is not too bad but on resting my head on the pillow last thing at night couldn't help noticing the flaking paint on the ceiling.
Regards food, we were both to afraid to try the hotel food as previous reviews have been pretty disparaging about it.
If theres one good thing I can say about the room...the bed was comfortable!

Some people say you pay for what you get, but no matter how cheap a hotel is, you still expect a useable shower and a lift where the wires are behind the panels instead of in your dace. Wouldn,t stay here again even if my life depended on it. Britannia Hotels...Coventry deserves better!
