“National Coach Trip”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

This was my first trip with National Holidays so did not really know what to expect from accommodation from paying low price for trip. I had read mixed reviews on-line before arriving at hotel and just hoped I was not allocated the ones with paper hanging from the walls and damp patches above bed.

Booking in was very organised and stress free considering the amount of people arriving at the same time. Although our room was on the 8th floor on first entering the room I was pleasantly surprised and thought room was nice. That was until I looked above one of the beds and guess what........Yeap u guessed it black damp patch with cobwebs hanging down from it and larger amounts of paper coming off the wall. I was staying with my 2 teenager daughters of which 1 suffers from asthma so there was no way we could stay in this room.
Subsequently this changed my view of the room and wanted to be moved.

The staff on reception were very understanding and very helpful. Not been able to provide me with another family room they offered me 2 double rooms next to each other, which suited us fine. These rooms were of much higher standard and very clean.

Constant heating in the rooms was fantastic. I rang down once during my 3 day stay as heating didn't seem to be working one time and staff attended within 20mins to check. which i thought was very acceptable.

Extra pillows and bedding provided in rooms
Showers powerful.

Staff were fantastic always willing to help.
Drinks from bar where reasonable priced also
Disappointed not more entertainment provided as there was quite a few children/family's staying in hotel.
Also nothing much around hotel so you were stuck there really unless you had a car.
Food was okay. Nothing to glamorous but good amount available and edible.

Overall I was happy with standard for the price I'd paid.
Agree with previous reviews could do with a lot of maintenance to bring it up to standard and comfort.

Room Tip: I was on the 1st floor and surrounding noise was minimal

We arrived after midnight to find a distinct lack of parking spaces. When we did eventually find one, it didn't feel like the safest place to park. First impression of the hotel is of a tired looking drab concrete building that has been left in the eighties. Whilst the staff are polite, they are not exactly the most warm and welcoming people and you get the impression they don't really want to be there.

The room itself was ok, could do with a revamp and some touches of glue on the wallpaper here and there. A lamp shade was missing and there were a few cracked tiles in the bathroom and the laminate was peeling off the inside of the bathroom door. At least the beds were comfy and clean. There was something sharp under the flooring of the bathroom that kept digging into your bare feet.

Breakfast was a disappointment. The bacon and sausages were swimming in grease, the scrambled eggs were rubbery, cold and had and interesting crust to them. The toast was thin and cold. The hash browns had a lovely taste of the oil they were cooked in. There were a selection of juices orange, apple and grapefruit. The orange had an odd taste to it, the grapefruit was slightly fizzy (not in a good way) and the apple insipid.

The best thing about this hotel was leaving it and going home.

Room Tip: A tip to choosing a good room: 1). The eight floor keeps you away from traffic noise 2). A famil...

The shame about the place was that the staff were lovely and very helpful but the state of the place and the meal was truly awful. The exterior was dark, the building was covered in graffiti and the place looked shut. Arrival and booking in was professional and friendly, reception stank of cigarettes. We went to our room which was clean, the best feature, the wall paper was hanging off the walls because it had been stuck on top of the old wall, which was better and I think the TV was one of the first colour sets. The bar was so cold that everyone had their coats and some of the older guests had blankets round their legs. The roast was good but everything else was just tasteless, apart from the mushroom soup which didn’t taste of mushrooms but pepper. Dessert was all gone, there was a soup kettle full of a watery custard, asked if there was anymore and we were bought cup cakes still in the wrapper, couldn’t make out the name of the supermarket, we declined.
The free bottle of red wine was actually not bad, we booked an early breakfast, which was delivered cheerfully and on time and it was very plentiful, but they had no croissants and jam would have been preferable to burger cheese slices. The airport drop off and pick up was faultless it was just such a shame that the fabric of the building the fixtures and fittings were a disgrace, I just hope that Britannia Hotels treat their stuff better than their building assets.
To sum up....................Avoid this place like the plague

Well where to begin.... After being sent from the Royal Court hotel (5 miles away) we arrived at this, what could only be described as a diabolical, appalling, 80's and extremely unsafe sham of what you apparently call a hotel.
The outside of the building is drab, concrete and unappealing. The sliding doors wouldn't open or close properly, therefore the reception and "lounge" was freezing and stunk of stale smoke. Last time I checked it was illegal to smoke in public places. The decor was old and extremely worn. Staff were I can only describe as bland, not enthusiastic and didn't really want to be there. We were told that they could just fit us in, even though there was plenty of keys in the old fashioned key holders. So off to the 8th floor we went, 2 out of 3 lifts working, dated and well worn corridors and stair well more suited to an office block. On arriving the 8th floor, there was such a draft, I may have well been outside. There was a cupboard half open and on inspecting what was in it, we found the main electric supply to the floor, 240 volts accessible to anyone. (Reported it and it was still open on departure!) The room... Well.... Mould on the ceiling, damp everywhere, rattling and drafty windows so it was freezing in the room even with the radiators on Luke warm (wouldn't get any hotter). The furniture was dated but reasonable solid, bed was hard and bedding was definitely tog free, no warmth at all, headboard was loose so had to jam a towel behind so that it didn't annoy the neighbours as I got it the headboard banged against the wall and we had a knock off them so the walls are very thin! Bathroom was "cleanish", no bathmat, toilet flush handle loose and shower intermittent with hot and freezing water.
Decided to go for a drink in the bar, crap house wine, lipstick on the Guinness glass and not my husbands choice of colour! Cold welcome, cold bar and cold lounge, football roaring. Only a hand full of foul mouthed contractors in the lounge, so we left half our drinks and went off to the rickety bed.
Cold Wind howled through the windows, women howling in the corridors and just an overall bad night, if only breakfast was the redeeming feature? NO!!!
Greeted by miserable staff, told to wait 5mins for a clean table, even though there were vacant tables. One waiter making cold toast and fetching the top up for the buffet breakfast. Overall disgusting.
On checkout we told the receptionist about the open power cupboard again, dropped the key and made a dash for the exit, the best part of the hotel! The best thing Britannia could do is demolish it and don't bother starting again, they obviously don't have any pride, standards or health and safety regulations that the adhere too.

I shall NEVER stay in a Britannia hotel even if they paid me.

Room Tip: Don't go here..... ever!!

This was a National Holidays trip but sadly not one of my better experiences.

On arrival at Coventry Hill Hotel my first impression was of a weary looking building desperately in need of a coat of paint (dull grey exterior not at all like the gleaming white photographs on the Britannia group website!). Checking in was pain-free unlike the extended wait for the lift. Out of three lifts only two were working and would only hold 6 people and clearly not the luggage of six people as well. We were given Room 313 which at first glance was clean and acceptable. On closer inspection the wallpaper needed a touch of glue here and there, the fixed shower pipe needed re-fixing to the wall and the cleaning equipment obviously did not reach the edges of the room (or the finger/toe nails next to the skirting board)!!! On a positive note the beds were new, clean and comfortable and despite our concerns that the duvet only just covered the bed we were not cold during the night. Extra pillows and blankets were available in the room if needed. The bathroom was adequate and served its purpose.

The hotel "lounge" however could only be compared to sitting in a cold store!!! It appeared that the inner sliding doors were stuck open (reading on here it would seem that they have been that way for some time) thus every time the outer doors opened you might as well have been sitting outside. Each evening people were sitting in outdoor coats if you were unlucky enough not to find a seat in the bar (which had no door at all and was right next to the stuck open inner doors) and most people chose to sit in the dining room even while people were still eating!! This room was so warm that at one point the staff had wedged open a fire exit door............ To make matters worse, when guests went outside to smoke they chose to stand by the hotel doors which then consequently did not close at all ............... I absolutely love the smell of other people's smoke NOT!!!!

Now to the the food and dining room experience. Breakfast was acceptable and edible with a good choice from cold to hot food. However the evening meals left a great deal to be desired. Steak & ale pie on Tuesday evening sounded good and hearty after being outside for most of the day but sadly did not live up to expectations. I would not have given the "meat" to a dog because he probably would have turned his nose up at it too. My mother was unable to eat any of hers at all as it was either fat or gristle and completely inedible. It was the same choices for dessert each evening of our three night stay and if you didn't choose your sweet before commencing your dinner then you didn't get one but the carrot cake with added fruit salad was okay. Staffing within the dining room was another matter. Each morning there was only poor soul making toast (3 slices at a time) on the type of toaster seen in holiday hotels abroad and therefore with at least four coach parties in the hotel and most of us eating breakfast at the same time, well you can only imagine. This poor young man was also responsible for making sure that the hot food kept coming and therefore was back and forward to the kitchen like a yo-yo. He deserved a medal for effort, albeit lacking speed and urgency. The dining room was self-service in all respects including finding somewhere to put your dirty plates etc once you had finished using them as the meagre staffing meant that plates were piled high in the middle of the table unless you could find an empty table to put them on. One salt & pepper pot between 8 people was another gripe.

So to sum up, if National Holidays are to continue to use this Hotel then I would seriously recommend that you choose another company doing a similar trip and who use a different Hotel to this one. If you like sitting in your room watching a 1980's style tv set while drinking drinks brought up in an ageing lift from a draughty hotel bar while attempting to digest almost inedible food, then the Coventry Hill Hotel is just what you are looking for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have stayed at the hotel several times in the past as it's convenient for the part of Coventry that I need to visit (Tile Hill). It's a 1960s building in need of renovation. Actually, in need of demolition. My room was adequate but rather dilapidated. The heating didn't work and the hot water took about 5 minutes to come through. It seems popular with coach parties, who probably pay a lot less than I had to. There is a bar and restaurant with a choice of 3 dishes on the night I was there. I didn't eat at the hotel. No other facilities that I could find except WiFi in the lobby. I had to pay £74 which was far too much for this quality of hotel. I'll stay somewhere else next time.
