On arrival you cannot fail to be impressed with the open plan reception leading into a very pleasant bar area. Check in, was quick and efficient, but then I'm afraid the standards drop. Once past the reception what you see is quite a tired hotel in need of refurbishment. My room was in the smoking section, (not my choice but they said the hotel was full), and you could tell, horrible musty smell which they tried to alleviate with a small air purifier plugged into a socket in the corridor. Once in the room, again tired with the bathroom looking really tired. Although keenly priced, this hotel is at best average and some way outside Coventry City Centre which will cost you around £11 each way. Internet is expensive at £5 for 1 hour, or £16 for 24hrs.

Room Tip: Stay well away from the smoking rooms. There are around 18 all on one corridor.

We stay in hotels that form part of the holiday inn chain up to 5 times a year and i have to say on this occassion i was a little disapointed. The reception area and check in were great and i have to say all staff that we came into contact with were extremely friendly. However once you go left out of the reception you see where the rescent reburbishment ends. The corridor and bedrooms are really quite dated and shabby and the rooms are really small especally the bathrooms. The lifts had a sign in that did not correspond to the floor you were on i.e. the sign said room 200 onwards were on level one but the digital display on the lift said level2. In the resturaunt it was basic tables and what looked like conference chairs- not what i would expect from a resturaunt charging £13 for bangers andmash! The swimming pool was clean with nice facilities but again the changing rooms were below par. It was these number of little things that i felt would take such little effort to get right and would leave guest with a much better impression that i felt really needed addressing. Overall i would stay again if i had too but would not choose to go back.

Room Tip: If your a priority members ask for your rewards before you travel else you wont get them!

We have just had a beautiful weekend at the Holiday Inn in Coventry. The staff, food and the hotel itself were excellent. I cannot understand why a hotel that holds at least two weddings and a long term reserved family reunion did not have the choice of wines, spirits and beers available for what seemed an exceptionally busy weekend. I actually felt sorry for the staff - no stock control - that is upto the management.

Stayed here on a Saturday evening as my sister had a course to attend in a place called Hinckley on the Sunday.

Staying in Hinckly leaves me cold as the hotels are fairly second rate, so we decided to stay 10-15mins away.

Our option was the Holiday Inn at the Coventry Triangle (M6, Jct2) we got it at a stinking good price (£29) on their own website I think! We had dinner away from the hotel which was a mistake - Saturday at Taybarns by the Showcase is rammed and waited 40mins for luke warm buffet food.

Hotel was clear, busy, secure car park, modern'ish rooms. The only down side was that our room faced the Ankle Biters playground and some parents left their kids to play unattended at 11pm at night. Equally, dont expect a lie in on a Sunday morning as they came back screaming their heads off at 8am!

There is an onsite Gym but I didnt use it.

In short, for £29 I would stay again but with a discreet note to put me in a quieter part of the complex :-)

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper and easily disturbed - ask for a room away from the Kids Playground.

Stayed here 2 nights this weekend for a wedding at another nearby hotel. We were welcomed late on the Friday after the joys of the M1 and its wonderful drivers on a Friday evening. Lady on the reception desk was quick and got us settled in. Got given a complementary late check out on the Sunday of 2pm from being a member of the Priority Club.

Got to the room which was decently furnished, nice comfortable sofa too (always book a room with a sofa bed in a holiday inn even if you dont need the extra bed, always great to have a sofa too!). Very modern 32" HD LG tv too with about 20 TV channels. The bathroom was a slight let down, the cleaner hadnt cleaned some talc behind the door and the roof was a little shabby and the paint on the ceiling could have done with a touch up. Great water pressure in the shower though, these 1970s 2-3 storey motels always seem to have great water pressure!

Went to use the leisure facilities which close to admissions at 9.15pm if you are getting here late. Pool, Jacuzzi, Steam room and Sauna all very good, Gym looked equipped with modern equipment but wasn't that big.

Had a few drinks at the bar after that, £5.85 for a 175ml glass of white wine was a little steep i thought, especially considering theres and Aldi next door to the hotel and an Asda or Tesco 2 mins drive away!

Breakfast the next morning we added on at £9.95 a head, little overpriced but the choice and quality of the buffet was slightly above average compared to similar hotels.

All in all would definitely use again if in the area, found staff to be friendly and with a sense of humour which is always welcomed. A few touch ups to the rooms, slightly cheaper bar and breakfast pricers and more reasonable WiFi would be areas they could improve on

Holiday Inn's are everywhere, as we all know. This one I found to be particularly annoying though. Basically the hotel itself has a neat and tidy appearance, is well decorated, and the rooms are clean and generally stylish. The problems I encountered were all related to small print and cost-concealing measures which I am sure are very effective in business, but make for a sour taste in the travelers mouth more often than not. Upon arrival I was greeted and checked in, and before leaving the front desk I inquired about the internet password... this is where I learned that internet in this neck of the woods works for 5 GBP per hour. I did learn afterwards that the rate goes down if you pay for a longer period (30 GBP for 72h, for example), but it was the way that the desk clerk told me (and without elaborating at all) that was quite rude. Additionally, I was unsure of whether I might have to stay for 5 or 4 nights, and noticed again on the paperwork that there is a 50 GBP fee for early departure (regardless of early notice, or seemingly so) which I of course took up with the clerk, they seemed unsure about how to handle the condition, and could not assure me either way about whether it was applicable in my case or not. Finally, breakfast is not included, and costs 9.95 GBP per voucher... the breakfast, which can be ordered item by item, was obviously or effectively powdered eggs, microwave pre-cooked bacon, etc. and had no value or taste. When purchasing these vouchers (much better off walking down the road to a nearby restaurant) if you may be leaving early, do not get one for every day you might stay, as they are strictly not refundable. These are all examples of why big chain hotels should be avoided at all costs (as they turn out to be significant anyways). One good thing about this hotel, in my opinion, is that I had a backyard facing window and out in the grassy area there were literally a hundred rabbits at all times, it was entertaining to see that. Of course if rabbits are the best thing about a hotel, something is wrong. Next week I will be at the Hilton across the motorway, I hope it will deserve a better review!

I only stayed overnight, but my lasting impression was of a simple basic business hotel, made special simply by the attitude of the people who work there. It is hard to put ones finger on quite what it was, but check in was quick and done with a smile, the bar staff were smiling, the checkout was quick and done with both efficiency and great good humour ( at 5 am, that is unusual).
The place is standard Holiday inn new décor, clean, quiet, but that doesn’t matter, what does matter is that this is a positive experience, something to warm ones heart when compared with so very many of it’s peers.

Room Tip: ask for a quiet room
