“Step back in time to excellent service and modern amenities”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

Located near the River Arun, very "Buzzy" area,Antique shops and across the road from the Hotel an excellent Pasta Restaurant, the there are two Restaurants together upstairs and downstairs, upstairs is excellent value.
The Hotel was built in the 1700,s parts of the original building remain, the service was excellent,Breakfast varied and good. We were in the Courtyard Annexe, overlooking a Suntrap Courtyard with garden furniture, enjoyed a bottle of wine whilst chatting to other guests.Only stayed one night, enjoyed the stay.

Room Tip: A bonus in Arundel, the Hotel has its own Carpark

The look and feel of this Hotel is as theTitle. Situated in the High Street in Arundel, with on site parking, enabling guests the freedom to view the historic town of Arundel. There are arranged ´walking tours´, and talks upon the history of the town. My room was situated at the front, and as it is the main road through Arundel it can be rather noisy. The room was very clean, but the furnishings were tired, and the carpet threadbare in places. The Bar and Dining room were a little chaotic due to ? staff shortage. Evening meal was average. The breakfast on the other hand was superb, with plenty of choice -cereals, fruit, porridge etc. as well as cooked breakfast. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and appeared to leave their own jobs to help around the hotel wherever, and whenever it was needed. There is no lift, so therefore could be difficult for anyone who may be disabled. The Norfolk also caters for Weddings, and holds ´Wedding Fair´events on certain dates.

Dear Lindy S

Thank you so much for staying with us recently, and I am delighted that you found the hotel comfortable, the team helpful and friendly and a breakfast to set you up for the day!

As I have responded to other reviewers St James Hotels acquired us in March 2014 and have a planned programme of refurbishment throughout the group, which will of course improve the Norfolk Arms Hotel enormously. Although we do not have a lift, we do have ground floor rooms which are perfect for guests who may have accessibility issues
.
We are a lovely venue for weddings, in fact we have one this weekend!

I hope that we will see you again.

Kind regards

First the positives - the hotel is in a fantastic location on Arundel's main street with free parking to the rear which is useful. The staff were all very pleasant and the room we were in was a good size, as was the bathroom.

My reservation regarding this hotel is how dated both the public areas and my twin room were considering the price charged (£130 for 1 night B&B). The bathroom was in real need of an update and although I find having a hairdryer in the room useful the one provided was so weak as to be useless.

I'll definitely be trying another place on my next stay in Arundel.

Dear L_Braybrook,

Thank you for staying with us recently with your friends, I am so pleased to read that you found the hotel in a fantastic location with free parking, that the room was spacious and the team pleasant.

As I have responded to other reviewers St James Hotels acquired us in March 2014 and have a planned programme of refurbishment throughout the group, which will of course improve the Norfolk Arms Hotel enormously. Our rates do vary depending on the time of the year, volume etc – the price you paid is at the top end of our scale, and do in fact compare very competitively with other hotels in Arundel - which during peak times, such as the Arundel Castle Cricket fixtures or the Festival of Speed etc can locally command up to £200.00 per night.

I hope that we will see you again in the future.

Kind regards

After reading all the reviews we were slightly nervous about staying at the hotel, but booked it due to attending a wedding in Arundel.

Location wise the hotel is fantastic, right in the centre of Arundel, with a free car park (very handy when the town can be a nightmare for parking.)

We usually play it safe and stay in the big chain hotels, but couldn't get a room at the nearby Hilton. You do notice the friendly, personal welcome of smaller hotels like this.

The hotel is dated, its good to read that it will be refurbished soon. Our room was in the building at the rear of the main hotel. It was quite small but clean and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom urgently needs an update, but the shower was powerful and there was plenty of hot water.

Breakfast was good with hot food (from a wide menu) and toast cooked to order.

My only point would be the £2 charge for credit card transactions! When you have paid £169 for a night it does seem cheeky to add such a charge!

All things considered we were pleasantly surprised by the hotel.

Dear Paull25,

Thank you very much for coming to stay with us – I am not surprised that you were in agreement that the hotel was comfortable, clean, friendly, central, good breakfast, copious quantities of hot water – in fact all the things which make an hotel an enjoyable experience.

Although we make a charge for credit cards, we do not for debit cards and I hope that you were given the option to make your final payment with an alternative card.

I hope that we will see you again in the future as Arundel is well worth a further visit.

Kind regards

stay,d at the Norfolk Arms Hotel on a two night b&b + one evening meal deal.while i agree with other review,s that it needs a wash and brush up to improve its faded elegant,s the Victorian appeal should remain. We had a room overlooking the high street which was clean, the bed was very comfortable . We cannot fault the food as it was excellent, the staff were faultless as nothing was too much trouble. Location is perfect and we will no doubt be calling again. P.s. the room was a bit warm.

Dear Mike R,

Thank you both for staying with us recently - I am delighted to read that everything about your stay was so good and we are pleased to know that you are returning. I do agree, it has been very warm, next time you come do request a fan as that will help the air circulation.

We have been recently acquired by St James's Hotels, and they have plans for us for the future - we will still keep our historic façade - so just the standard 21st century improvements!

Kind regards,

We stayed here as a couple this weekend, after reading on Trip Advisor that it was the best accommodation in Arundel. Sadly this is no longer true. We had a room in the main hotel - we got lost trying to find it and were told by a member of staff we came across that staff had been told to show guests where rooms such as ours were - not even sign-posted! When we entered the room, we were very disappointed. Any character had been firmly removed from the room and it looked like it hadn't been decorated since the 1980's.
The window was a wooden sash window - which wouldn't have been a problem, except that it was rotting and covered in black mould. The net curtain also had a fair amount of mould on it too. This is not down to the hotel needing refurbishment, it means that basic maintenance and cleaning has not been carried out! I also agree with the previous reviewer who said that the rooms on the 2nd floor were too hot to sleep in.
The staff were great - bar staff (you know who you are) kept us entertained, and the reception and waiting staff were always eager to please.
As we live locally, we caught a local taxi home and the taxi driver told us that the new group that now own the hotel, took in on a fair while ago, so that is not really an excuse.
To be honest we were disappointed in the hotel which should have had loads of character and charm, but poor maintenance etc let it down. You should be thankful that you have such good staff that people can put up with it - though they shouldn't have to!

Room Tip: Don't stay here!!

Dear Stickystuff,

Thank you for staying with us. Trip Advisor reviews are always very personal to the individual posting them, and indeed to the guest who made that comment, we are the best accommodation in Arundel - and while I am extremely happy to accept this accolade, I do accept we are in need of a programme of refurbishment.

St James Hotels acquired us in March 2014 – and unlike a domestic house, it does take a little time to organise the redecoration and maintenance that the property requires, which was promised by our previous owners but did not materialise. I know that progress is currently being made.

Being an old building some of the rooms are small and consequently quite warm, and whilst yours fell into this category it must have one of the best hotel views in Arundel, in that it overlooks the Castle and some lovely private gardens.

It is always really pleasing to read that the staff were great – whilst we appreciate the limitations in which we work, we are ultimately proud of the Hotel, which as many other reviewers observe does still, despite its condition, have loads of unspoilt character and still some charm!

Kind regards
Elizabeth d’Apice

I booked a special deal through Travelzoo, which was an excellent price for dinner bed and breakfast. I didn't have high expections for the price I just wanted somewhere clean to stay. The staff were lovely both in the restaurant and reception.

The hotel is very dated and in need of some refurbishment. Although our bathroom was clean a working shower would have been helpful , the water just trickled out and therefore it was impossible to have a decent shower. As we only stayed for one night we were able to make do and it wasn't such a problem. I don't live far from Arundel so know the area well and the hotel is in a great location for exploring the area and visiting the castle.

Free car parking is provided and opposite the hotel is a great pub that occasionally has live music.

The food was ok but don't go expecting michelin star standards, it's your typical pub grub and not food I would normally eat, that said it was perfectly fine and served hot.

For the price we paid I was very happy however if I had full price I may feel differently.

Dear Joanne 9215

Thank you for staying with us recently and I am pleased that you found the team so lovely, I am certainly very lucky with them. I was sorry to read that your shower was not working well – I do hope that you mentioned it to us, so that we were able to rectify it, we have copious quantities of hot water so it was a shame that you were unable to enjoy the shower – but the bath would have been good!

We have recently been acquired by St James’s Hotel s Group – and as you live locally you will be sure to hear of our proposed refurbishment dates, after which you must revisit us.
