“perfect for a chill out weekend, as long as no private functions”
Reviewed 10 August 2009

When we arrived at this hotel we were pretty impressed with the grounds that were very pretty and well kept. we had been caught up in traffic so were very tired when we checked in. Check in was quick and easy and we were told where to find our room, we had to go to the first floor walk a long corridor and then take the stairs to another floor, it was quite a mission to get there with our luggage (no lift), on opening the door i was instantly disappointed at the size of the room, it was very small, and although it looked very clean there was a musty smell, and that was with the window opened. we decided that we would try and get a room change as my partner had difficulty with the stairs. on the way back to reception housekeeping were still doing some of the rooms and we looked into a first floor room which was alot more spacious, we asked if we could move to that room and the receptionist obliged us, though she warned us that it would be a lot noisier. we went downstairs and had a few drinks out in the garden and started to really chill out. later we had a meal in the restaurant and i can honestly say the food was delicious, and i can be very critical, my partner had the duck which he said was the best he had tasted, and i had a steak, lovely and tender.......desserts were scrummy too. we just relaxed in the evening with a few beers in the lounge area. the receptionist had been right it was quite noisy in our room and i was woken at 2am by members of a private party, but i would prefer that to the other room. in the morning we went to breakfast and i have to say the food was really good, a huge selection of hot and cold foods, different breads and tea & coffee, and as much of it as you like! we went out for the day around arundel and tired early evening we headed back to the hotel, unfortunately the place was in chaos, young inexperienced waiters/esses found it hard to cope with the obvious lack of staff on duty and it was beginning to resemble a scene out of faulty towers, i felt very sorry for them because residents that had booked tables for the evening meal were queueing up and starting to get agitated that their tables werent ready, luckily we had eaten out.
I would wholly recommend this hotel for ambience and food, the staff are very helful and pleasant, but would strongly suggest that you go back to reception if you are given a pokey room because we swapped ours for one twice the size at no extra charge. we really enjoyed our weekend here and would go back again.

We stayed for a quick overnight here to visit the South Downs. Having read previous reviews, I was a bit nervous but think we got lucky. As Diamond members, we eventually persuaded the check in girl to upgrade us, and our room in the new grand hall wing was nice - clean and new. I think a basic room in the main building might have been less impressive. This is an old manor style hotel set in lovely grounds with a golf course and extensive leisure facilities. We played giant connect 4 and used the putting green in the garden and had a great time. It looked a bit cold for the outdoor pool but the small indoor pool seemed quiet and good enough. Breakfast was nice quality and I loved the porridge with maple syrup - sadly the English summer sometimes warrants a hot meal! Like many out of town English hotels, I felt the staff were a little inexperienced and undertrained at times - the bar staff not really knowing what they were doing, breakfast staff a little frenetic and the check in girl not recognising the benefits of Diamond membership for us. This didn't have the wow factor of some Hiltons we've stayed in, but as a country hideaway it was lovely. Mind you, their website directions from London were brief to say the least making it quite hard to find if you don't know the area.

We originally tried to book on the web for the 2-4-1 deal. I found that the confirmation would not show the breakfast included. I noted from Tripadvisor that you do need to make sure it is on your confirmation. In the end I called and the lady the other end said that will be fine and the rate was £39.50 per night for the room with breakfast!! What a deal. I think it was 50% of the 2-4-1 costs.
When we arrived we were allocated a room with one small double and no room for the grandaughter. Quick call to reception and we were allocated a room with a pull down bed for her. That was fine and we trundeled right through the hotel, about 500 yds! to our new room.
The room was quite hot but there was a fan. A couple of points about the room. One of the bathroom lights was out and it suprised us that this was the case for the two days. you would have thought the cleaner would have spoken about it to maintenance.
The other thing was that , despite the fact there were three customers in the room there was only 2 mugs and 2 glasses etc. I am always suprised when there are three is it such a suprise to housekeeping!
Another moan is the lack of milk cartons. Again they never seem to have enough to enjoy a decent mug of coffee/tea.
Enough of the moans
As others say the dining experience was great.
Escorted to a nice table and , of course the Kids eat free programme is exceptional. Dinner for our grandaughter was a three course extravaganza and this was good because she had things delivered when we had our courses and the choice for her was very well planned. We were worried about taking her into the dining room and having to keep her occupied. However this not needed. The staff looked after her well and she enjoyed herself. By the way the Adult food was very good as well.Breakfast was good as well so all in all a great weekend.

Mmmm I don’t know where to start with this hotel!

The hotel & its grounds were very pleasant & parking was ample.

The rooms; we were upgraded to a deluxe room as part of an offer. The room was spacious and had nice views. Iron & board in the room, safe, TV, Radio alarm, dressing gown & slippers, Tea & coffee making facilities & the usual mini toiletries. So far so good. We thought that the check in time of 3oclock was a little late to enjoy an overnight stay though.

The restaurant; dinner was very good, though if you want anything like steak there can be up to £12 supplement. Service was quick. . We had dinner when it opened at 7 which meant that it was quiet - by the time we left at 8.30 it was very busy and noisy with kids. Breakfast excellent, plenty of choice. We were down to breakfast by 8.30am - again a good time, by 9 it was really busy and I actually saw queues for toast?!

The bar: pricey!! £4 for a 35ml vodka before you add a mixer!

Staff; great, attentive and amiable.

The 'spa'; the treatments were great , unfortunately the pool (which is pretty small) is open to kids all day long. It seemed to be treated as a sports centre, where people who wasn’t staying at the hotel brought their kids in and paid to use the pool! Not quite the relaxing spa we were expecting. The sauna was broken, leaving only the steam room - which also had kids in with their parents - even though kids were not allowed. We managed to use the pool & steam room at about 5pm and again at about 10.00am. before 5pm and by about 1pm the place was swarming with kids again. With Butlins, Bogner & Brighton so nearby I'm surprised that people would bring kids to a hotel like this.... there's nothing for them to do! Guess the dads wanted to play golf and the mums didn’t want to stay home alone with the kids?!

So would I go back?? Not sure. If the spa was adult only or at least had part of the day that was adult only, then yes, I'd go back in a second - but you really can't market this hotel as a spa as it isn’t relaxing at all. The hotel is really nice, but its location means that it's not great for this solely for this use either. We got a very good deal so I wasn’t too disappointed. if i could get the same deal again, maybe i'd go but be more prepared..... or go outside of school holidays.

The hotel is situated a few hundred yards off a dual carriageway approximately three and a half miles from the main Arundel town with no other bars or restaurants near by you will need a designated driver if you like to have a drink with your meal our you will have to eat in the hotel every night.

The main bar area had a large lounge which opens out onto a rear terrace and lawns. The painted wood work on the walls of the lounge could do with a repaint and the imitation white leather sofas in the lounge area need to be placed in a skip as they where becoming threadbare on the arms and headrests.( these where highlighted by a previous tripadvisor in January)
Our room on our arrival smelt of cigar smoke despite the room being a non smoking room, the curtains in the room had a rip in them. I contacted reception to express that we where not happy with the room and asked to be moved, we where told that another room was not ready and would have to be “made up” a little of a surprise as we where checking in at three in the afternoon. we where asked to wait in the bar after being given a voucher to get a drink will we waited for the room to be prepared. My wife and I sat in the bar for over thirty minutes without anyone coming to get us so we eventually inquired on the progress to be told that the room was ready. The room although an improvement on the first room was still disappointing with no fridge, safe or air-conditioning and a window which had an opening restrictor fitted resulting in the window only opening by four inches on warm sunny day leading to a slight claustrophobic feel to the room. At night we had to have a fan blowing all night in order to move some air around the room allowing us to get some sleep.

On the Friday morning the breakfast service was a shambles with people being seated at dirty tables and being told to help themselves to the breakfast buffet whilst the table was cleaned. We had to wait for cutlery with our breakfast, the butter on the table had not been replenished and we never did get any napkins.

At times some of the staff gave us the impression that they really did not care about the guests comfort or wellbeing and where merely doing a job.

Booked this hotel expecting a relaxing countryside weekend break away. Our room was little bigger than a rabbit hutch with a scenic view of the hotel dustbin area. Although the bathroom and bedding were both clean, there was little else in the room that wasn't chipped, cracked, soiled or sticky. Corridors looked terribly old, dirty and dull. "Family friendly" means you will eat your dinner surrounded by screaming toddlers no matter how late you eat! Felt sorry for the staff that have to work there, as personally, I couldn't wait to get away!
