“Worth a look”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Now I like churches and cathedrals. I like architecture and sculpture and art. I also like the peace and quiet. However I find the inside of Arundel Cathedral cold and not all that welcoming. The only time the place seems to come alive is when the carpet of flowers is et up and there are lots of visitors. They also have some very good concerts and other music events, although some of them are over priced for what they are.

Interesting to visit but unless you are going to an event or to a service its probably not a "second visit" place.

“Beautiful and peaceful”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

As you drive to Arundel the view is dominated by the castle and the cathedral. It looks so similar to the best of the Loire valley towns. Take time to visit the cathedral, impressively gothic exterior anda beautiful, peaceful interior. No matter your faith, or lack of, you will be inspired by this sanctuary.

“Took the cherry from the Cake.”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Not as big as it first appears.Unfortunately the Cathedral was under reconstruction and a large cherry-picker took up most of the central area. But I'm glad I visited.

“Impressive position”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

If you have visited many cathedrals in Europe, you cannot fail but to be impressed by this building as it sits on the skyline above Arundel, acting as a counterpoint to the magnificent castle next door.

However, if you are an experienced catherdral watcher, once you arrive at the building after a steep climb through the quaint little narrow streets of Aruyndel, it is quite evidently not what it appears to promise at a distance. Whilst built in the Gothic style it dates from 1871 and that newness means it lacks the extended historical detail you find in Gothic Cathedrals nearly everywhere else. It looks new, both inside and out.

There is already some weathering of detail externally after just 140 years, but the interior is remarkable bare for a Catholic Gothic cathedral, simply because it is not yet old enough. The stained glass looks wonderful in sunlight; the organ loft is impressive; had there been a service on I would no doubt have found it a different experience, but impressive though it is, there was a feeling of reproduction about it for me.

Still, have a look for yourself and form your own view. It is worth the climb, but it is not Chartres.

“Amazing building”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

I am not one for going to church on a Sunday but this building is just amazing . When you look at all the fine craftsmanship to build this you think how did they manage this ? You have to admire the people who spend their time to keep this building how it is . This is well up there with the other fine buildings I so admire and seen . Definatly worth a generous donation for the thrill this building gives you .
