We always feel welcome at 'St Mary's Gate' and the kids do ask to eat here (a little more often than we'd like! We do like variety!) We especially enjoy the Chicken Massala (my 5 year old LOVES it!), the tuna baked potato with a very fresh salad and the steak pie (lovely pastry and gravy).

This is a character pub in Arundel adjacent to the cathedral. On the night we went there was a darts match, which helped with the general atmosphere, but because of the size of the establishment, did not impinge on our dining. The landlord reported the chef had got stuck in traffic and there may be a delay, but as it transpired, it did not affect us. We were the only diners at the time we were there, which was quite early, but it is a sizeable pub and can cater for many. I suspect the gentleman behind the bar was the landlord. He was friendly, helpful and attentive, and served us our meals when they were cooked. The menu was basic but more than adequate to give a reasonable choice. The food was well cooked and presented and came out piping hot. The quantity was such that we were unable to manage a pudding. The ale was well kept, We had an encoyable evening and would urge visitors to Arundel to visit.

We had often thought about trying this pub for lunch and today the opportunity presented itself. The meal did not disappoint - I had vegetarian lasagne while my husband tucked in to liver and bacon. It was all so tasty and plenty of it - there was no room left for a pudding! It's all pretty much "pub grub" - well cooked and tasty and not at all overpriced. We will certainly be going there again.

Walking round Arundel on quite a cold Good Friday, and feeling hungry, we looked for somewhere to eat. As all of our more usual haunts were packed, we decided to give the St Marys Gate a try (as we were going into the Cathedral anyway) It was a warm welcome, good, friendly service and excellent food. The star for me was a "special" consisting of lamb burger, chips and a side salad. The burger was a nice size, moist, juicy and well flavoured with mint. Just enough chips, and not too big a salad set it off. All in all a very memorable meal and a much appreciated respite from the cold.
