“The Black Rabbit Arundel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2009

Arrived for lunch with 5 people. The restaurant was busy which is not unusual for Arundel as it is a popular tourist destination.

The Black Rabbit operates an order at the bar scheme for food and drink so on arrival we queued to order. 20 minutes later we placed the order which came to £72 with drinks. 55 minuts later and after two complaints to the Manager, who kept telling us how busy they were, the food arrived. The 'home made' lasagne' was appalling with dried out meat and soggy pasta and the ploughmans had a stale roll *not the french bread which was on the menu) and three pieces of cheese with lettuce, pickle, tomato and shavings of onion. For this we paid £8.

Staff unhelpful, food terrible, service appalling and would never go there again.

“Woeful Service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2009

We recently took visting family from Canada for a meal having been there a number of times in the past and had a good time
This time it was awful. The service was terrible, our main courses were brought before our starter and when we complained to the waitress she said it was out fault for not saying we wanted them first! We ordered two meals for the children and they bought out their deserts before the main meal. The Yorkshire puddings with the roast were clearly out of a packet and were hard and cold, it's hardly difficult to make your own Yorkshire puddings!
They don't bring out any cutlery with the food which would be fine if they actually could be bothered to tell you where to find it when dumping the food on the table.
Worryingly some of the meals (the "gourmet" lamb burgers) were bought out within a couple of minutes of ordering so clearly had been quickly heated in the microwave with little care for the presentation or taste.
The people on the table behind us waited an hour before getting their food and had to complain twice to the totally disinterested waitress and on the table in front of us we also heard the customer's complaining that they had been brought the wrong food.
Trying to be positive, the beer garden is in a beautiful location next to the river with views of Arundel castle but unless you only want a drink from the bar I would totally avoid the place.

“Terrible”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2009

As locals, we have been to the Black Rabbit a couple of times and on those occassions it has be okay, nothing amazing, but okay.
On our most recent visit, four of us went for a meal and arrived at 8pm on a quiet Monday night. We tried to order our meals only to be told they had run out of chicken wings, so had to order something else, to be then told that they had run out of bacon...ordered something else, to be told they had run out of goats cheese! I am unsure why they didn't just tell us which meals (if any) that they actually DID have! The poor excuse that they used was that it had been a very busy weekend due to the good weather! The customer service was completely non-existent and the menu was pretty lacking anyway. We cut our loses and went to the local Pizza Express in Arundel, which gave a much better service and at least they actually had food in their restaurant!!

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 February 2009

It’s well signposted from the town on those brown tourist signs – which may give a clue to what the pub is like. We asked the cashier in the newsagents about the Black Rabbit, and he said, and I quote “Suppose it’s alright, if you like that sort of thing”. Not exactly glowing, but we’d thought we would try it.

You could walk to it from the town if you have the right shoes on. It’s pleasant enough. It’s set in a great location, by the river, nice view across the flats to the castle.

First impressions, it’s busy, very busy. Every tourist and visitor and their dogs are there. I’ll accept a good pub to be busy on Sunday lunchtime, but this wasn’t pleasant. My immediate impression was corporate greed in a nice location. The pub is small and overcrowded. It’s a find your table and order your food at the bar. Plenty of vacant tables outside, very pleasant on a winters afternoon, but they weren't serving food outside, hence the clamour for tables within. But that doesn’t matter; since the wait for food was approximately an hour and a half we were told. All of the staff looked harassed and were certainly trying to do their job. It seems the pub is devoid of any real character. The range of beers was pretty standard, as was the food menu (scampi and chips, etc.). Can’t tell you what the food was like as we didn’t stay long enough to find out. I’m sure it was fine though if you could be bothered to wait. Won’t be going back in the near future, unless I want to lose weight.

“Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2008

The location of this pub is amazing, by the river with Arundel castle in the background. Good choice of Ales and lots on the food menu. Its a big pub with many tables indoors and out - nice to go there on a sunny day and sit by the river.
