I am really not into history but I was really amazed by this visit. In addition to seeing the excavated site we were told a lot about the relationship between some local people with the Romans, the way the better off lived and, most importantly, how that information is obtained from archaeological digs. Be sure to see the introductory video before going around the site and ask to go on a guided tour of the Discovery Centre i.e. where the artifacts are cleaned and analysed.

A small but well organized museum. They do a fine job of capturing the excitement of finding a Roman palace in the south of England and the work done to restore it for public view. The floor mosaics are quite wonderful and you can scarcely believe you are looking at something 2000 years old. I've seen worse floors in houses built 5 years ago.

The main site is preserved inside a wide open indoor structure with interior walkways which allow you to get quite close to the artifacts and ruins. There is also quite a bit of mystique present because even the experts here can't explain everything they have uncovered.

There are also volunteers in period garb to help bring exhibits to life.

It's not the Louvre or the Museum of Natural history but what they have here is well done and worth seeing.

There are a lot of school tours going on so it might be advisable to call and see what the crowd situation is on a particular day.

Worth the trip.

My 6 year old daughter informs me that the Roman Palace at Fishbourne was 'very good'. Remember though, first and foremost it is a archaeological site more than a museum.

Overall she did enjoy her visit with her almost 4 year old sister - which fit in nicely as they recently have been learning about the 'Rotten Roman's' via horrible histories books. It's great that we still have these historical Roman sites on our doorstep and it was good that we could show them that the Roman's were actually real. They enjoyed dressing up as a 'Roman princesses' and enjoyed watching the information videos. There were also other hands on activities to do, which were equally accessible to our 4 year old. The staff were great, especially the volunteers - helpful, friendly and full of knowledge. They really go out their way to find out information for you or to answer any questions that you may have.

We got a good family deal via Groupon so it's worth shopping around (£11 for a family of 4). We ate at the on site cafe which was very reasonably priced and had excellent customer service.

In all, a place like this may seem 'boring' for young children but they do cater well for an educational and fun visit for children. There was plenty of information about the site and its historical bearing. Thank goodness it didn't become the location of an intended housing estate or else the history would be lost!

Came here on a school trip as a child and it is no less awe inspiring now. Do take advantage of the free tour of the exhibit store, we learned lots and the guided tour of the mosaics was fascinating.
Everyone should come here at least once, a fantastic place.
