“Don't eat here before the theatre”
Reviewed 31 July 2012

We went to see 'Kiss me Kate' at the Festival theatre and thought it a good idea (being close etc) to eat at the Brasserie. Not recommended ; there are far better restaurants and Gastro pub nearby. It was not a good experience though others may find it okay. On Monday night we arrived for a table at 6:00pm (show starts 7:30pm) and were immediately seated- so far so good .
We sat there until 6:20pm before our food order was taken ( only main courses ordered) drinks order was taken approx 10 mins later (bottle of wine and glasses of tapwater). The food arrived within 5 mins but no drinks order. Obviously preparation was not a high point as it was reasonably hot but possiblly microwaved. To be honest before theatre meals are like this so no exception there however it took a further 10 mins before (after asking the waitress about it) that our drinks appeared. The excuse - there seems to be a problem with the bar. Would we eat there again certainly not. There is no excuse for this. They know they have a prime position; they know that people come to eat and quaff drinks before the theatre and that it is time limited. The brasserie needs to get its act together. I would not go there again.

“"Acceptable"”
Reviewed 31 July 2012

My wife & I visited the Brasserie between matinee and evening performances at Chichester, having booked some weeks before (good job we did, it was fully booked on the day). I had asparagus & pea soup (very fresh) and the "spicy" lamb tagine (lamb perfectly cooked, but very little of it, the portions overall we thought were a little on the small side) which was OK, but nothing exciting. My wife had the Devon Potted Crab and Prawns (very tasty) and Cod Loin served with a Citrus Butter (extremely dull). We finished with apple pie (soggy pastry) and Pimm’s Jelly and White Chocolate Panna Cotta (very little Pimm's flavour, and a larger-than-necessary crown of piped cream. Wine prices very reasonable for a restaurant.
Overall, we won't be rushing back: it was OK, but never lived up to expectations. If we are back in Chichester in winter, we might consider the Brasserie purely for the location, but I'll set my tastebuds to numb...

“There really is time between shows to go anywhere else. So do!”
Reviewed 26 July 2012

So, this is probably going to be the worst - or second worst - review I have ever written.

The Brasserie has a captive audience in all the theatre-goers who are constrained because parking in Chichester is such a nightmare (shame there isn't a review slot for carparks because the Festival one in Chichester would get nul points)

And the food is what you might expect provided for people with no choice.

The staff are pleasant enough and the ambience OK if a bit canteen-y. But the food!

I had a starter and pud - my favourite combination. The sweet potato frittata was anaemic and flaccid. It was under-seasoned and had no bite. It tasted bland and amorphous and not particularly of sweet potato or anything else - though vaguely eggy. The dressing on the side didn't add much but the leaves were fresh and varied.

The presentation of the main courses was poor: if you are serving cod then surely boiled potatoes and leeks are going to look dreary whatever they taste like. And in my mum's case, she found it wholly inedible: dry, flavourless fish and leeks and other greenish stuff that repelled her. To be fair, sister-in-law on same dish said it was fine and ate the lot. The chicken dish with noodles was underwhelming though the vegetable wellington OK if not smashing. Everything was very under-seasoned. The big chips were good if a bit flabby.

I got really cross about the pudding. Eton Mess should have strawberries, meringues, strawberry puree sauce and lightly whipped cream - probably in that order. Mine had no puree, about five strawberry pieces and hardly any meringue. It had a lot of very stiff cream. It was also very cold. And didn't taste of anything. How can you mess up Eton Mess? Even I can't do that.

The manager was quite confrontational when told about the fish (didn't bother about the Eton Mess - he wasn't listening!) and was unwilling not to charge for it. He gave in - well, people do faced with sister-in-law - but not with grace.

So not a good way to mark mum's 81st birthday. Just as well the plays were fab. Next time it's Comme Ca (fully booked) or the lovely Field and Fork at Pallant House for us.

“Why go anywhere else?”
Reviewed 30 June 2012

Handy for Chichester Festival Theatre, this is the ideal place for pre-theatre meals or drinks. In the Upstairs bar the staff were friendly and efficient, the menu choice included locally sourced food and it was well prepared and served. In fact it is worth dining there even if you're not visiting the theatre. And, by the way, the public car park is free after 6 p.m.
