“Pre-theatre supper”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2013

An efficiently-served although a little uninspiring pre-theatre supper before a magnificent performance of Barnum. The average age of fellow diners must be about 70 (us included!) but perhaps a menu should attract younger diners as well. It needs a little more pzazz.

“Rushed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2013

Granted you have to be finished in time for the show, hence we booked for 5.30pm allowing plenty of time, but we felt very rushed. The bread and water already on the table when you arrive (so no choice of white or brown), starter arrived literally about 10 seconds after we ordered/ mains came at the same time as the starter plates were taken away, then when we said we didn't want a pudding the bill arrived and we had wanted to have another drink as it was only 6.10pm. Walked out feeling quite unrelaxed.
The starters were quite a decent portion but the mains were small and there are only 4 choices of starters and mains so check out the menu online before you go. Very disappointing food, I had so been looking forward to trying Field and Fork. I appreciate the Festival theatre is a prestigious place so I expect to pay more than a restaurant in town but the price was not justified.

“good for a mass catering operation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2013

we ate here for the first time on Saturday, the restaurant was full. This is a very efficient mass catering operation and the food also of a good mass catering quality. This is a very important facture to take on board if you decide to eat here. I realised this as we walked by the wonderful surround glass windows as a roll ,butter and a glass of iced water were already on all the tables ! All staff were students under 21, but had been well trained , we have no complaints here, however as no members of staff have their own " serving section" remember this is a mass catering operation" we were approached on more than one occasion for the same thing, eg, have you had your starter yet , can I get you drinks ?, not a problem for us but would annoy some people! Food was acceptable, nothing special, but ok. If this had been a wedding breakfast, people would have been very happy with the food .However, as a meal before a show , Barnum in this case, fantastic by the way, I would rather find an independent Brasserie in the town, with freshly prepared and cooked food and I know, for the money we paid, £55 for two, including tip, no drinks, we would be able to do this better. We would not return

“Amazing - good food in a theatre restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2013

Theatre restaurants are generally dire; uninspiring, uninteresting and poorly presented. But Field and Fork have raised the standards and the lunch we had here was excellent. My wife and I both enjoyed the gazpacho, followed by slow cooked beef and slow cooked belly of pork. Service was excellent. Our only criticism was that it was noisy, not helped by wooden chair legs on a hard floor; it could be easily solved by putting pads on the legs.

“Not bad; needs improvement.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2013

We were a party of five having a pre-theatre dinner. The staff were all young and helpful and worked the room efficiently despite the usual madness of a pre-theatre sitting. The food was good but a little lacklustre in some respects - a gazpacho soup could have had more flavour and the shin of beef came without the listed potatoes and despite asking several times no explanation or offer of doing anything about it was forthcoming; a shame as it's not exactly a cheap dinner (£20 for two courses, £25 for three; not including drinks) and the portions are small. Starters came before drinks and we had to ask many times before we actually got them.
