“Good Food and even better beer !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2012

My wife and I have stayed here twice now and seeing some of the negative comments by previous visitors thought we would tell of a totally different experience. On both occasions we have been made more than welcome by all of the staff including the landlady. Our accommodation was a twin ensuite and was slightly bigger than some of the Inns that we have been to. The menu is quite imaginative and sourced locally. It is freshly cooked and the portions are good. The pub has won a West Sussex CAMERA award is one of the nicest pints we have tasted on our travels. We have stayed in several pubs from the Good Beer Guide and it is worth remembering that this is not advertised as five star accommodation but is an old fashioned country pub with a good mix of locals and visitors. In this sense it lives up to its name. We have also tried several of the other local pubs and restaurants in this area, some of which have been mentioned in other reviews, but for good quality and value for money the Horse & Groom is hard to beat.

Booking three nights B&B over the phone was not a problem and was advised that if we arrived between 3.00 - 6.00 p.m., when the bar was closed, we were to phone upon our arrival in the car park.
Received and warm and friendly greeting from the landlady and after confirming the booking details we were shown to our room, which was in a seperate block behind the pub and restaurant. The bedroom was furnished with adjoined twin beds, two bedside tables, a small work surface c/w chair, a fitted wardrobe and a wall mounted TV; the ensuite consisted of shower, wc and hand basin. Tea and coffee facilities were available in the room.
We ate in the restaurant for two of the three evenings (no evening meals available on Sundays); had no complaints with any of the meals which consisted of fresh and local produce - can thoroughly recommend the lamb. The two restaurant areas are away from the bar and provide a cosy atmosphere; service was prompt and friendly.
The breakfast choices are simpler with orange juice, tea / coffee, various cereals, toast (white and brown) and the traditional 'Full English' (egg, sausage, bacon, fried bread, mushrooms and tomatoes) on offer. The only recommendation we can make is that we would have appreciated some fruit and yoghurt to have been available.
The real ale was superb - this pub has a traditional underground cellar so the beer is kept at a constant temperate; four ales were available as well as other lagers, wines and spirits.
The location and access to the local countryside and coastline suited our dog walking requirements; a key to the afore-mentioned accommodation block, a few paces from the large car park, meant that we could come and go as we pleased without entering the pub and restaurant - an added bonus when you're handling two eagle eyed labradors always on the look out for a stray crisp or chip.

By far and away The Best Food in the South, other aspect of the pub/accomodation are not so good though, but worth a visit to enjoy the fine dining on offer, local ingredients.
Service can be a little slow sometimes, but worth the wait for freshly cooked food.

This pub is lovely inside and is in a great location but the customer service needs work. Despite the pub only being half full the staff seemed unable to cope, plates weren't cleared, sauces weren't provided and food/drinks were very slow to arrive. Also, despite specifically requesting a high chair when booking the table there wasn't one available when we arrived and we were told "we didn't know you were bringing a baby" and "well..they're all being used". Food was good when it arrived, but there was only one small bowl of veg between 3. The Staff's bad attitudes ruined our family meal out.

Stayed here for a wedding and found the landlord to be really welcoming, ESP given that we were a large group of 30 somethings.

Rooms perfectly fine although sheets and blankets not adequate for weather and pillows could do with replacing.

Pub is lovely. So cosy and food Is nice.

My wife and I stayed at the Horse and Groom for 3 nights. We found the publican, his wife and all of the staff to be absolutley great. They were warm, approachable and happy to assist a couple of Aussies who had never been to West Sussex before. We paid full price for our accommodation and meals and did not resort to try and "blackmail" our host into getting a cheaper deal in return for a good report on Tripadvisor as I suspect other people have. I don't even mind mentioning that my name is Ken Mahon. I would recommend this fine establishment for accommodation and/or a meal. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay and will return in the future.

The pub is ok but to stay overnight the landlady is a total nightmare, unfriendly , aggressive, unhelpful and should not be in the hospitality business. Like the other reviewers I would recommend that you do not stay here ever in your life . There are plenty of other places nearby that you will find to stay in.

Thank you for your review!!

We take our reviews very seriously.

I am sorry to hear that you wouldn't recommend our pub to anyone due to the landlady's attitude towards the general public.

I see that you posted 2 bad comments under different names?

“a terrible experience - the landlady is a nightmare”

“We were most disappointed and will never go back”

I will look into this review and add to the responce when I have looked into this complaint.

many thanks
