We realised we had not had a cream tea, so decided on our last day to have this special treat.

We’re going to Crumbs and Creams unfortunately they had run out of scones so they directed us to The Buttery At The Crypt.

The cream tea was okay, placing our order and service was really slow even though not that many people in and most were having the cream teas. Portion size of the scone was massive and lovely and warm but could have done with a bit more tea. As most places when we ask for two teas we are usually given two pots.

Tables were sticky as though had not been cleaned for ages. A very odd smell about the place but that could be due to the old style crypt.

Reasonable priced afternoon tea compared to most places in the town.

Has been up dated since our last visit, and not before time. New menus and décor and waiters/waitresses who are more professional than the previously employed students.

Ideal for a shoppers lunch, morning coffee or afternoon tea.

Food was ok and not bad portion size, it was really quick and efficient. It was all a bit basic, but ok for a stop off. Waitress was polite, smiley and friendly. Tables were a bit sticky, but were wiped promptly when we asked. I guess it was functional, just not outstanding. Loads of people were having cream tea which looked nice.

Stopped off here for a late breakfast while shopping in Chichester and was very disappointed. There is a notice asking you to find a table and then a waiter / waitress will come and take your order. We sat down and were seen by the gentleman and lady behind the counter, but it was nearly 10 minutes before someone came over to take our order or even ask if we wanted a drink while we chose what to eat. As there were only 3 other couples inside it isn't as if the staff were busy. The notice on the wall says that during busy times you may have to wait due to all food being freshly cooked so probably not the best place to go if it's busy and you are hungry. I had the baby breakfast which was an egg, beans, a rasher of bacon and a local sausage. My husband had a toasted sandwich. The food arrived quickly, without the drinks! My breakfast was overloaded with baked beans which spoilt it and the plate was cold. The toasted sandwich, which was barely toasted, was served with a small side salad and some crisps which made it look nice. The lattes were hot and tasty when they eventually arrived. After I had ordered my breakfast the waiter came back and asked if I wanted toast as the breakfast didn't come with it, I said yes but it wasn't until we paid that we found out two pieces of toast (again barely toasted) cost almost as much as the breakfast! Would I return here....no! There are many places to eat in Chichester and this is one place I will avoid in future.

Great find for afternoon tea and cakes...historical setting after walking round the cathedral and grounds next door, loved the atmosphere and sitting beneath the vaulted ceiling and stone pillars.
Great cakes and a nice pot of tea to round off our trip to Chichester town centre.
Menu has great choices and will call here for lunch sometime soon...well recommended...
