A beautiful hotel in a lovely part of Chichester . Room at front of hotel,Importance of Being Earnest , loved the quirky touch of the script papering the wall. Breakfast great. Most of all though from arrival to departure service was exceptional. Too often hotels rely on amenities and design and forget about service...not here , they have it spot on!

We (and a lot of family and friends) have just stayed here for 3 nights for a family wedding. From start to finish the staff couldn't have been more helpful and provided us with everything we needed/asked for. The food at the wedding was lovely. Didn't have the mass produced taste/look it could so easily have had. Staff were very efficient to get everything turned round on the day with a minimum of fuss. Breakfast was great. Hot food cooked to order. bedrooms were well appointed and newly decorated . Highly recommended

Room Tip: Rooms at front have a view of the street that is not noisy at night

We were booked into the Ship Hotel and also for dinner at Murray's restaurant. On the morning of our booking I switched on my phone and found voicemails and emails from the night before asking me to phone the hotel urgently. Upon phoning the hotel I was advised they had made a mistake with my booking and that they were fully booked with no reservation for me anymore! I'd booked the hotel and restaurant to celebrate my wedding anniversary so was not impressed to get this news on the day we were meant to be checking in.

However, I must say, that from the moment the hotel admitted their mistake they were then very professional and did everything possible to look after me. They had reserved 2 rooms at alternative hotels (so we could choose which one we preferred) and agreed to compensate me for the inconvenience caused. We still had dinner at Murray's restaurant and the food was delicious.

At the end of the day mistakes can be made but it was comforting that the hotel's customer service kicked in and ensured that I still had an enjoyable weekend.

Nice location for hotel and room. Room 38 at back with nice views over park, so fairly quiet in and outside hotel. Good size 'superior' room and bathroom with huge bed. BUT room on top floor and as heat rises, room very hot. No way of turning heating off in bathroom. Also bed well past it's best and looked very well worn. Very soft with 'topper' to cover up it's age. Who wants to sleep in a soft bed? Couldn't sleep due to the marsh mallow effect. Partner had to re-arrange topper and pillows to get any sleep, and ended up with a bad back afterwards. Shutters broken and woodwork a bit tatty, dirty grout and sealant although room otherwise clean, windows flithy, bedside lights impractical for reading with. Very small TV. Staff professional and polite though. Breakfast average, had better. Not value for money for a 4* hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a decent bed!

Dear AnnieL70,

Thank you for your taking the time to post the review and your kind comments about our rooms and staff.

I can assure you that we do absolutely everything possible to ensure temperature control in our bedrooms and our housekeepers make this a daily priority. I was however surprised at your comment about the towel rail in the bathroom which turns on and off at the base. My staff would have been pleased to do this for you.
Beds are, of course, very personal things but when we refurbished the bedrooms last year we spent a great deal of time carrying out a bed audit throughout the hotel and tried countless samples. All our beds, pillows, toppers, encasements and mattresses were replaced in march of last year and to date we are pleased to have received endless comments as to how comfortable they are and what a great nights sleep guests have had. I am truly sorry that this was not the case for yourselves and that we did not, on this occasion, meet your expectation.
We hope that you will visit us again.

Kind regards

I stayed here for two nights around a friend's wedding, having booked far in advance! The hotel is wonderfully-designed: with each room having a theme from a play (including have pages from the play on the wall). The room I stayed in was well-sized, with a very comfortable king sized bed. It was very stylish, comfortable and a great place to stay.

Even on entering the hotel, the sweeping staircase (which looks like it could have featured in period films) and the well designed reception area gives the hotel a sense of style - and that is reflected in the rooms themselves. I liked the spotlight lighting - but with lamps and available and plenty of natural light in the daytime should you wish (and the blind was fantastic at keeping out the light so that you could rest). The bathroom was vast, with great products available (Rituals, I believe - they smelled great).

Staff were very helpful, friendly and chatty, which I loved. The breakfast was also fantastic - great buffet options available, with hot options cooked to order. Again, the staff members were very friendly and the food was great quality. It was in a great setting, which I understand has been recently refurbished. A great sense of style and atmosphere in the restaurant.

The hotel is well-located in the centre of Chichester, which has the feel of a nice market town. It is about a 10 minute walk from the railway station, down the main high street.

A really lovely place to stay - and highly recommended.

Dear Darren F,

Wow, thank you so much what a fantastic review we are all delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and awarded us 5 out of 5.
We have spent the last eighteen months refurbishing the entire hotel, with little disturbance, and we are extremely proud of the result, which makes for a lovely atmosphere for our guests and a great place for us all to work.
As an independently owned hotel we are genuinely keen to ensure that all our guests enjoy their time with us and we hope you will come and see us again soon.
I have passed on your comments to my very happy team.

Kind regards

We really enjoyed our overnight stay at The Ship Hotel. The location is perfect for walking to
the Festival Theatre, Pallant House Gallery and the centre of the city. The top floor room was rather small, but nicely decorated and very clean. The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
The breakfast, included in the price, was superb, in a lovely setting. Highly recommended.
