“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

Have just had two nights at this lovely hotel. ALL the staff we came across were pleasant, friendly and helpful. Was greeted at reception with a smile and this happened everytime we went to reception - they know how important smiles are as well efficiency. The room we had was number 38. It was lovely but hot - the hotel cant be held responsible for the weather but they had put two fans in the room which helped a lot. The room and bathroom were clean and nicely decorated. Had dinner in Murrays on the first night - great food and service. Breakfast was good, not sure about the coffee though. Loved the old fashioned lift. Good location for shops and theatre.

The Ship is very well-placed for the Chichester Festival and Minerva Theatres and the city centre (15 minutes walk from the rail station); we visited on one of the hottest days so far this year. The room (4) was not huge but big enough for our limited needs (it had decent clothes hanging space as well). I was worried by the lack of air-conditioning but the sash window could be opened fully. In any event, trying to instal air-con into an old building would severely compromise the character of the place and reduce the height of the ceilings, which are airily high. The night's sleep was no worse than I would have had at home on a warm night and the bed was comfortable. The room was clean and, along with the common parts - staircases etc - well-decorated. Small problem: the water pressure in the cold tap in the bathroom handbasin was high and (also because of a tap which operated counter-intuitively) could soak the unwary.
Breakfast was v. good except for the coffee - I'd stick to tea in future! My wife and I did not have dinner there so I can't comment on that.
Staff from reception to restaurant were all polite, helpful and efficient.
There aren't many hotels in Chichester city centre but The Ship doesn't seem to be milking its privileged position unfairly.

Room Tip: Room 4 was at the back - no traffic noise - on the first floor. There is some (not heavy) motor tra...

Brought a group from Brighton following a matinee @ CFT & I can't thank must Natalie, Sophie & all the other staff for a really superb supper last nite. We all enjoyed the food & service (compliments to the chef & staff, please).
I look forward to bringing another group later this month.

We stayed at the Ship Hotel for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and I think we were very lucky to get a room there as it was very busy.

The hotel itself is lovely, very cosy, relaxing, clean and well maintained. Our room was right at the top (15 I think?) which from previous reviews we worried would be too small but we found it very comfortable and perfectly adequate.

Food in the hotel was delicious and very reasonably priced and service was excellent, at all times, from all staff. Very friendly, helpful and polite.

In all a fabulous hotel but just one tiny detail stopped me giving it the full marks: water pressure in the shower was not very good and it took me ages to wash my hair (I have a lot of hair!).

We would absolutely visit again!

A huge thank you to Natalie and her team for pulling out all the stops for my son's wedding on Saturday 5th July. The care and attention taken was outstanding, the wedding lunch was excellent. A memorable occasion enjoyed by family and friends alike. We would recommend the Ship Hotel unreservedly, and appreciate all the help and support of the team there for the planning and hosting of the wedding.

A spur of the moment decision led us to spend a night in Chichester and a last minute booking at the Ship Hotel, we are regular visitors to ti Sussex city, and our first choice of hotels were unavailable, so we grabbed the last room at the Ship.

Fabulous location right on North Street perfect for shopping, the theater. etc

Greeted on arrival all is well, room 15 is small and hot although a fan was provided and difficult to find, the bar is crowded as there is a wedding on so somewhat chaotic in terms of service. We decided to eat out.

Breakfast was adequate to good, no cups at the table salt no pepper, and the bar area had debris from the night before, it is a pleasant hotel but rates no more than average overall but the location is superb. I would reccommend booking a bigger room so do not go for standard which could be described as small.

Room Tip: Book higher than standard which can only be described as small and the rooms can be noisy if near ba...

THE SHIP
The Ship is a very old building in an ancient town!! Location is great…easy to find, park and access local shops cathedral theatre etc. Décor is smart/contemporary..dark woods, lime green & greys. Reception, lounge, bar, restaurant all look good and the bedrooms continue that theme but we were very disappointed with our room. It was clean, the bed was comfy but it was TINY….too small for 2 people to move around! Bathroom was ok….slightly dated but clean and functional.,,..,.,.but shower curtains are an absolute No No these days! There was no privacy because its on the main street unless you close the curtains but then the rooms dark so you have to put the lights on which made the room even hotter than it already was….so it didn’t feel great to be in the room!! I had contacted the hotel in advance to explain it was my mother’s 80th birthday treat asking for a nice room but it felt like we’d been given the worst in the hotel….tiny, on the 2nd floor, facing the street, right by the lift which was noisy and dangerous (it’s v old so mind your fingers when you close the old metal door!). Food/drink in the restaurant Murrays was good. I wouldn’t say it was brilliant but the ambiance etc was nice, service was good, prices weren’t bad. We got £30 pp allowance towards a la carte or set menu included in the dbb rate….we had 3 courses and still had allowance left over so you can easily get a v good meal on that rate. Breakfast was good but let down by poor service, served in Murrays the décor etc was all great, the buffet nicely presented and good variety and cooked breakfast was nicely served but the crockery was dirty especially the tea and coffee pots…they were a bit disgusting actually!!

Overall I’d recommend The Ship for location…..but I’d make sure you get a better room than we did (not 2nd floor opposite the lift!), dbb is good value but the one thing that really lets this place down is the staff/service. They were polite but they were like zombies…..nobody really made any attempt to talk to us, serving food in silence…..generally unfriendly unhelpful. If they could sort out the staff then this would be a great place!!

Room Tip: avoid the lift, get room on ground or 1st floor.
