“Lockgate Dairy - what a find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2013

This was my first experience of Bed and Breakfast accomodation but we were not disappointed. Far from it, Lockgate Dairy turned out to be all that the owners website describes and much more. It may seem a bit remote and you definately need a car to be able to access it easily, but it is is an excellent position for touring along the south coast, with the benefits that come from the peace and tranqulity of the countryside.
The owners were exceedingly welcoming and obviously a lot of thought and care has gone into providing comfortable, modern well maintained rooms. There were lots of extra touches- access to a fridge for your own wine and snacks, an invitation to bring your own take away food back - with use of plates, cutlery and to eat in the conservatory or dining room, plush towels, hugely comfortable beds- I could go on.
The breakfast was amazing - huge choice of food - all served by Martin - who is a most convivial host. Nothing seemd to be too much trouble. This is a B and B that derserves the 5 star rating. Superb!

The couple who recently took this place on and tranformed it into a top B&B, have got it absolutely right. This is a place to delight you - and the effort and small touches add up to a tremendous experience.

Firstly, the place is incredibly pretty - the visuals are great, From interior design through to the amazing grounds and garden, nothing will disappoint.

Secondly, the facilities are beyond what you would expect. There is a delightful conservatory with its own honesty bar if you are in the house. We stayed in the B&B suite and the beds, mattresses etc were lovely - massive and very comfortable. Just lying on them made you feel sleepy they were so comfy.

As a fairly hard-to-describe third point, there were numerous little touches. We had chocolate and fresh milk in our room when we arrived, the breakfast was incredible (and believe me, you wont go hungry...), the TVs and movies in the rooms were great.

We had a wonderful two night stay at Lockgate Dairy. A beautiful country escape; so peaceful. We stayed in the Pagham Suite and had a very comfortable bed, and the room was beautifully decorated. The bathroom was great, with beautiful soft fluffy towels. Little touches like mineral water and chocolate in our room was a lovely added extra. Everywhere was scrupulously clean. The hosts Martin and Helen were very welcoming, and it felt like you were staying with family. The breakfast was delicious and Martins's brilliant sense of humour made breakfast a very relaxed time!! We will definately return.

We have stayed at several places in this area and without doubt found this to be in a class of its own. The house was set in beautiful countryside and had private gardens that could be enjoyed.
We stayed in the main house- Pagham suite- two exceptional bedrooms with a separate large bathroom (great shower!). All were very tastefully decorated, comfy and spotlessly clean- just what you want. Thoughtful touches included: quality shower gels/soaps, bath robes, chocolates, drinks etc.
I would agree also with other reviews, the breakfast was exceptional - quality ingredients - great choice of cereals, fresh fruit and full cooked English.
The hosts, Martin and Helen were particularly welcoming and friendly. There was a great family atmosphere in the house. They were keen to help in any way to make the stay a memorable one. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

We were looking for relaxed and friendly accomodation in the area to bring our young grandchildren (2 and 5) for a short break. Lockgate Dairy rose to the challenge - the beautiful Wren Barn was our home for the week and met our expectations in full. Every amenity at our disposal and the best and most comfortable beds we have slept in. Quiet yet set within easy reach of local sights - the amazing West Wittering beach our favourite. Thank you Helen and Martin for a wonderful carefree stay - we will be back!

After a long walk nearby it was lovely to come into such a nice room and super bathroom before heading off to the theatre in Chichester.Excellent location for both! Great breakfast next morning too. Only disappointed we hadn't booked for two nights instead of one. Would definitely choose to come back. Very welcoming hosts too. Highly recommend coming here!

Booked Lockgate Dairy for 1 night only as were visiting a local Blues Festival but we really wish it could have been for longer. The room we had was beautifully furnished and the standard of everything is very high. From the superb bed right down to the tea bags, all was top quality, including big fluffy white towels (White Company), superb bed linen, gorgeous toiletries and beautiful Sophie Conran table wear. Martin and Helen were very welcoming and were kind enough to let us check in early so we could get off to the festival. We enjoyed a delicious freshly cooked breakfast which again consisted of top quality ingredients. The property is very quiet and off the beaten track but with easy access to Chichester or the coast. The gardens are very nice indeed and look particularly lovely at this time of year with lots of roses in bloom. We will definitely go back when we are in the area again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Lockgate Dairy offers superb, 5-Star B&B accommodation. Once, a working dairy, Lockgate Dairy is set in rural, open farmland away from all busy roads. It is an ideal place for down time at the end of the business day, and a peaceful night's sleep. Road noise is banished, here. The extra little touches you'll notice and a hearty breakfast, the next morning, will see you right through. If you're in the zone more for pleasure rather than necessity, for a short break, then Chichester is famous for its cathedral, the Festival Theatre, the Novium Museum (based at a Roman bathhouse) and high quality restaurants of varied cuisines. With wide streets and plentiful parking, the town is one of the South's most pleasant shopping experiences, unusually, still dominated by independent shops and plentiful interesting architecture.Immediately surrounding Lockgate Dairy is flat countryside ideal for walking, cycling and exploring Chichester Harbour (sailing, boat tours) with numerous charming waters-edge hamlets and pathways, the expansive sandy beach of West Wittering and the nature reserve at Pagham.Drive just 15 minutes and you could be revving it up on the starting grid at Goodwood motor racing track or looking down Runway 33, about to launch into the skies from Goodwood airfield (formerly RAF Westhamptnet, a satellite WW2 airfield to RAF Tangmere where Hurricanes, Spitfires and Typhoons were once based.Drive a further 5 minutes you're into glorious South Downs scenery. There, Goodwood horse racing is a sure bet as is the amazing Weald and Downland Musuem. ... more   less
