“Like a Premier Inn but better”
Reviewed 20 December 2013

It's really a 4/5 but I didn't use the health club facilities, which look really good....but I did use the restaurant, which is just OK.
Top deck rooms (£20 supplement) are nice enough. The big picture window would be a bonus in a nice location but, overlooking a car park (or motorway/business park) it's not so appealing. Staff? Good, helpful (if a little bit inclined to play it by the corporate book rather than look after you as an individual). Room, not bad....comfy bed, SKy movies etc, decent bathroom, tea/coffee etc. One gripe....this happens too often. A tea/coffee tray with a Kettle that has no obvious available power supply. You have to hunt around the room for a socket. Really, this stuff is obvious...put the kettle where it can be plugged in!! Design the room around the kettle if you have to.
Anyway, nice cotton linens, a desk. iron etc....good.
Dinner in the restaurant (Vinni Vid Viccis' or whatever) was mediocre at best. We opted for the buffet because we had limited time. "Here's your plate, you only get to go up once so make it count and pile it high" is not what you want to hear. The selection of cold cuts was OK....but the spanish hams were at the bottom end of the supermarket variety and that was the hi-light.
Breakfast was the usual limited affair with sad bacon and poached eggs that were neither soft nor well done.

Management, think about what you might want to eat rather than what is convenient and cheap to serve....this stuff matters. No point having a night between Egyptian cotton sheets if you are only going to remember the dull and soulless breakfast experience.

To be fair, this place is never going to cater for the Special Occasion market...it's more of a business hoitel and it's pretty good as they go. A bit more attention to detail and it could be really good.....even if the location will always hold it back.

Room Tip: Upper deck ... worth the extra

This hotel is now called Urban Village Resort Leeds South and has the Velocity health and fitness club as part of its facilities which influenced our choice of this hotel as we enjoyed swimming in the morning in a 25m pool.

The hotel overall was comfortable and reasonably priced. Our standard double room was clean and the bed was comfortable. There was a large flat screen TV although the channels available were a little limited. I was a little disappointed as it was not as well appointed as the description had led me to believe. Breakfast was buffet style with lots of choice.

Points to note:- the car park was very busy every time we tried to park and it as not possible to get very near reception; in the room there is hanging space but no drawers; toiletries in the bathroom consist of two wall mounted dispensers, one by the sink with antibacterial hand wash and one in the shower with an all in one hair and body wash. Overall I would say the standard double is fine for one but not so good for a couple.

Our first stay here was a pleasant experience. The facilities are generally good - the fitness suite and the pool quite stunning. Room was stylish and well decorated - the effect was very much moderated when we found the drain on the walk-in shower blocked!!! Bar food was adequate which was just as well as the main restaurant closes at 7pm on Sundays!!

We have stayed here many times before for different occasions. We come to Leeds for my partners birthday, we decided to have 2 nights in the hotel. We booked the offer online of bed & breakfast including dinner on the first night, and also upgraded to the 'Upperdeck' room I rec a call a week before we arrived advising me that the onsite restaurant was closed and since i had the deal of dinner on the first night then we could either have room service or eat in the pub. I wasn't too bothered by this so long as we could get some food.

On our arrival to the hotel we were supposed to get a VIP welcome to which we did not, we had to stand in a queue to check in like everyone else. We were explained to where our room was etc and that we could have room service or eat in the pub for our meal. When we turned around to look at the restaurant we could see it was packed! We asked why we were told the restaurant was closed when in fact it was not....the response we got was ' that is what we tell people when the restaurant is fully booked!' we were not happy about this at all, had we been told it was fully booked we would of accepted that but to be lied too is never a good thing!

We decided to go to the pub for our food, we walked in and it was packed with people drinking and socialising before they headed off out into Leeds, this usually isn't a problem but when we eventually got a table it was too loud for us to hold a conversation. We went to the bar and asked what we could get as part of the deal and we were told u can have whatever u like on the menu so long as it is not steak, we thought this was reasonable and looked at the menu. The menu does not offer much choice at all, we looked at it for a while but decided there was nothing we fancied and decided on room service instead. We went back to our room only to find the problem of there is no where to sit and eat room service in the room other than on the bed, there is a dressing table with a chair built in but no good when 2 of you want to eat. We looked at the room service menu and again not much choice, by this time we had been sorting out food for over an hour and a half but the menus are not the best, we decided to go back down to the bar and just get something rather than wasting it. When we went back down it had got busier and after another wait we got a table. We ordered our food and our starter came out quite quickly, we ordered the tomato soup and a flatbread and to be honest i cannot fault it, it was beautiful. We then had to wait over 35 minutes for our main course to come out, it came eventually and again was nice and whilst sitting eating it our desserts were brought to our table! the girl looked at us and could see we had just started our mains so walked past us with them. We finished our main and asked for desserts and they came out 20 minutes later! so not very fast at getting food out!

We went back to our room and this is where we started to notice the problems with the room, the blinds were so dusty when i closed them the dust fell off, the bed side lamp was broken and couldn't be re positioned, the shower had limescale on, so much so i had to clean it before i got in and the shower door was covered also. All surfaces in the room were covered in marks and cup rings. I do not believe we had the better quality linen or duvet, as we have stayed many times before this was the same quality as the previous times in a normal room.

We had a good nights sleep and got up to go for breakfast the next morning, the breakfast is beautiful, i could not fault it. Only problem we noticed was one of the staff dropped cutlery on the floor and picked it up and put it straight back in the container with the rest of them!

We spent the rest of the day in the pool/sauna/jaquzzi, it was fine but the childrens swimming lessons that were going on in the pool were really quite noisy so it meant it wasn't very relaxing.

The rest of the time spent there was fine, a lot of christmas parties going on but you could not hear them in the room so no problems there.

We come to check out on our last day and were told there was a charge of food and a newspaper, i asked why there was a charge for food as we had the deal for food and i was given no explanation but told it had been took off and there was just the newspaper charge to pay, i thought the newspaper was complimentary but didn't mind having to pay for it.....until i was told it was £1.90!!

I understand we had quite a few problems but all in all this hotel is very nice, the staff are very helpful and friendly and the room decor and size is very good. I hope this has just been because they are very busy coming up to Christmas, not really an excuse but i hope this isn't how the hotel is going to be from now on. as we always enjoyed coming for our weekend away.

WOW! Had an amazing night as where I work had booked here for the xmas party. I'd never stayed at a Village Hotel before. I was abit unsure about it being on an industrial estate, right next to the motorway. But once we got inside it looked lovely and christmas-sy. The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
The beds were comfortable and the view of the motorway looked quite nice at night. The bathroom was perfect with a nice walk in shower and very spacious.
Our company had treated us to a free bar and a 3 course meal in the inspiration suite. Only bad things I can say is that the bar was incredibly small for such a large amount of people, and I wasn't that impressed by the food as it was a little undercooked for my liking.
But saying that, the breakfast was absolutely wonderful, so much choice!! A member of staff had asked me if I wanted it in my room, and then she helped me carry the tray up! all along the way back to my room, the staff and EVEN visitors were saying "do you need any help?"
It was such a friendly atmosphere!
I would definately stay here again, so happy with my stay.

The hotel offers an excellent health club, good breakfast and comfortable beds. The price was also very good value with free parking and nice modern rooms. Not 5 star of course but certainly recommended although quite far out of Leeds if you are looking at staying there without taking your car.

Competes really well versus Novotel, Jurys and Holiday Inn but not in the same league as the more classy Devere hotels but that is not their intention.

Only downside is the location really.
