“Great hotel in perfect location”
Reviewed 11 September 2011

The Leeds Mint Hotel is in an ideal position, just 5 minutes walk from the station, 10 minutes from the heart of the city and 15 minutes alongside the canal to the Royal Armouries. There are two ways to approach the hotel, the slightly longer pretty approach alongside the canal or the more usual walk under the arches. The arches are actually underneath the railway station and are quite a feat of engineering and different from the normal approach to a hotel.
Firstly, a couple of negative points. We arrived at 8.45pm on a Friday evening and there was only one person on check-in and they were handling a group of three people who appeared to have a problem with their reservation. Eventually, another member of staff arrived to check-in the man in front of us, which again did not appear to be straightforward. However, we were eventually checked in by Paul, who was very friendly and helpful. The second negative is the wait for lifts. The bar on the top floor is very popular with local people and the queue for the lift in the evenings can be quite long and the lifts are not the most efficient to say the least. Things were not helped this weekend with one of the three lifts out of action. Apart from the fact that three lifts is probably not enough under normal circumstances, the steady stream of people going to and from the bar means that it is certainly inadequate.
The rooms are modern, comfortable and come complete with an iMac for all your entertainment needs including free access to the internet which is rare in hotels. The bathroom only has a shower but this was not a problem for us. The soundproofing of the rooms seemed good as we heard no noise during our stay and the hotel was pretty full and there were definitely other people on our floor. We had a room on the 11th floor overlooking the canal which was ideal (except for the waiting for the rather quirky lifts!).
Breakfast is excellent with a very wide choice and the hot dishes being cooked to order. The first morning we had to ask where our coffee was as they seemed to be taking a long time. Apparently the check went ‘missing’ but all was resolved quickly. The restaurant manager even apologised to us when we left even though we had not said anything to him - very impressive. On Sunday morning the restaurant was so busy that we were asked to wait in the Granary Lounge opposite. They had thoughtfully provided juice, coffee and pastries in there for those who could not wait to start their breakfast. Although there were a few people ahead of us on the list the wait was only 10 minutes. As the restaurant was so busy and people were constantly coming and going we thought we would have difficulty attracting someone’s attention but not so, a waitress was with us almost instantly and service was excellent.
If you want a hotel that is a bit quieter than one in the city centre but that is still close enough for an easy stroll to all the shops and restaurants then this hotel is for you. It is modern, comfortable, good facilities, excellent staff and a good restaurant. There are also other restaurants and bars nearby if you do not want to walk too far. It is perfectly safe walking back to the hotel at night as well.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor overlooking the canal

Having now stayed at the Mint Hotel in Leeds (formally City Inn) on a number of occasions, we would not stay anywhere else when visiting Leeds. Rooms are always clean, modern and have everything you need, hairdryer, toiletries , bath robes, iron/ironing board. The breakfasts are excellent even down to having a huge pot of coffee left at your table. Parking is under the railway arches costing £12 for 24 hours (there is some more parking at the other end of the arches which is cheaper but not as nice). The Hotel is ideally situated near the railway station, the Leeds to Liverpool canal (nice walk) and is in easy walking distance into the town centre for shopping. Would recommend.*****

Room Tip: Ask for a canal view room if possible.

Location excellent easy to find from the Motorways, parking onsite and safe but expensive, pleasant enough Receptionist on check in and check out, room very basic but did the job, my biggest gripe would be the Bar staff in the skylounge, rude and miserable, if your not happy in your job then don't do it !!!!!

Nothing seemed to be working, internet down. Staff unhelpful. Room dirty, plenty of spare rooms but they would not even consider moving us to a quieter room that had actually been cleaned.

Great location for easy access to the railway station and within walking distance to most places in Leeds.

Have a drink or two in the Skylounge but also get yourself to Dover Street Market for wine, beer, cocktails and stylish relaxed ambience.

Catch the no. 36 bus to Harewood House, a grand stately home with beautiful grounds.

We ate at the Engine House on Foundry Square and Black House - both were great meals.

And don't miss the Art Gallery and City Museum.

Have stayed here before great hotel. great room, brilliant rooftop bar. Only downside went down for breakfast at 9.45am and joined a queue of approx 80 people. Provided drinks etc but didnt get sat down until 10.45am. Not good enough, lack of staff and disorganised chaos.
