“A bit dull, masses of guns in cases, not much interaction”
Reviewed 31 July 2014 via mobile

First time I've been back here as a visitor in years, and sorry to say its as underwhelming as ever. Grey on the outside sets the scene the contents too.

Loads and loads of guns and swords, plenty of armour and a mix of other old military bits too. So if you're into that stuff this is probably a treasure trove. But as our kids put it "there's lots of stuff but it's all pretty much the same". Less detail and more imagination and interaction would be good. There's a few screens here that our kids were magnetically drawn to, but not much.

All that said, it's free, there's a cafe, and it is somewhere to kill a couple of hours if you're stuck for something to do. The oriental gallery on floor 4 with its war elephant model and armour is a highlight, and there are bits on jousting tournaments, hunting, war, and even swords from The Hobbit if you're interested.

Cafe is fine if nothing special, with some outdoor seats overlooking the dock too. Nearest car park is a couple of minutes away and £3.50 for 1-2 hours and £4.50 for 2-3 hours. You can walk from the city centre easily enough too over the pedestrian footbridge from the Calls area. Entrance is annoyingly at the far side from the river.

Think they do jousting displays some days, but nothing on when we went on a school hols weekday, so worth checking in advance if you want to see that.

Overall, would love to give it a better review as it's good to have a big, free museum in Leeds and judging by the reviews here plenty of people do like it. But all four of us found it boring and crying out for a revamp. Less done better would be so much more.

“Entertaining for young and old”
Reviewed 30 July 2014 via mobile

This place was free and totally captivating for our 9, 15 yrs and adults. Lots of buttons to press and real people giving demonstrations. It was better than the armour on show in the tower of London. Shop was full of great presents for people. I didn't like the floor about hunting as I love animals so it upset me but the kids loved finding out about using fake horses to get nearer to animals. We loved the giant elephant and the sword fighting demo in full armour. A great day out for all ages.
