“Excellent Hotel”
Reviewed 12 August 2009

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and the rooms were clean and very comfortable. The bathroom had a hairdryer, loads of towels and a very powerful shower. The room also had ironing facilities which was a wonderful asset.
The food in the restaurant was hot, delicious and beautifully displayed. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. When arriving for breakfast we were always asked if we wanted tea/coffee and, by the time we had collected our breakfast (amazing selection) the pots of beverage were on our table. The staff were always happy and could not do enough to make us feel at home. Service was definately five-star at this hotel.
There was free use of the internet which was an added bonus.
We would not hesitate to stay here again - would recommend asking for a room in the back as there is a nightclub across the road from the front rooms as we did. Wonderful, clean and quiet room - what else could you ask for from a hotel?

Stayed here a single night with work. Meeting was in the hotel and decided to risk it despite the firm who books my hotels for work recommending not staying there.

Arrived a reception upgraded my room - asked if I could be near the front of hotel as WiFi has a limited range - was booked somewhere near the back. Not hugely helpful - so had to work in the bar/restaurant.

Service at the bar was non-existent & after waiting several minutes in full view of reception staff I asked if anyone was serving - to which a "Yeah" was yelled across the room. My mineral water was banged on bar, no glass, no ice, no pleasantries.

Breakfast the following day was a complete debacle - all hot food was barely luke warm - the toaster cremated the bread & complaints drew a shrugged response and a "yeah, people mess with the settings" - NO apology or even an attempt to pretend to care.

On check out I was asked if everything was satisfactory with my stay - although I stated room was fine I complained about service and breakfast - again no apology or explanation and nothing care about customer service.

The hotel has been re-furbished in some parts (reception, restaurant etc) but the corridors and some rooms are clearly dated.

Overall the service and standard of food at the hotel was poor - like something out of a corporate customer service film - unfortunately as a classic bad example - where staff as a matter of habit ask if everything was alright but clearly don't care about the answer!

Really enjoyed the stay.
Grabbed a great bargain from Lastminute.com (only £24 for the night!)

It didn't start off to a great start.....the girl behind the reception was on her friend on her mobile. - All i wanted to do was check-in, but was left standing about 5 minutes. She wrapped her call up with "I'll text ya later" and then she came to see what i wanted.
She redeemed her self as she was quite friendly and helpful - Great local knowledge.

We dropped our bags off and headed off as we had a performance at the Leeds Grand Opera Theatre. (only 10 mins walk) - This is a great location for Pubs, Clubs, Shops and basically everything in the city centre.

After the performace we went back and grabbed a shower and headed out into the city. The hotel is near clubs so you so hear a bit of noise, but nothing too much. We didnt roll in until 2:30 anyway!!.

The room needs aircon!, it was well hot!. the window only opened half way.
The TV looked new.....So new that non of the Freeview channels had been programmed in. it did have a built in DVD player however.

All in all - a great little hotel. If i was paying the full price £55 a room then i'd of been upset about the Aircon, but for £24 i couldn't complain.

This hotel was very good value for money. With brand spanking new rooms, and more toiletries that are needed, excellent food,it should be a 4 star hotel. The only bad thing is to ask for a quiet room away from the nearby night clubs,as it there was very loud music.

Although at the time I stayed, the hotel was undergoing refurbishment, there was little in the way of interruptions.

A few nice touches in the room. A dressing gown, chocolates and bath salts in the bathroom made it a bit more personal and didn't go unnoticed. An excellent selection of tv channels too, and a flatscreen tv to watch them on. Also, a very reasonably priced room service menu, with a good choice, though not served 24 hours.

A couple of negatives. Can get noisy with its location in the heart of Leeds' nighlife, and rooms can get warm without air conditioning. There was a ceiling fan in my room, but it's effect was negligable.

All in all though, recommended.

The hotel has now become the Cosmopolitan, but I'd booked it when it was the Golden Lion yet wasn't told when the name changed , so I arrived in Leeds looking for the Golden Lion. One of the public rooms was being refurbished but this didn't create any problems. The room was spacious, comfortable and reasonably clean, but the central heating didn't come on, the electric heater didn't work and there was nowhere to hang towels in the bathroom. The tea/coffee/hot chocolate supplies could have been more plentiful. The rooms are supposedly soundproofed, but you could hear people nextdoor & in the corridor. The noise from the clubs outside at night, cars horns constantly blaring, the constant stream of taxis, plus ambulances & police vans was something to behold. The secondary double glazing kept some of it at bay, but the hotel should provide earplugs. There was a good selection of food at breakfast but it wasn't exactly piping hot. On the first morning we had trouble finding a table and then found one which hadn't been cleared from the previous occupants. On the second day there was a partial power cut mid afternoon which meant food was no longer available. Some rooms had no power or water for nearly 12 hours and the fire alarm was going off intermittently. When we queried this with reception there was no apology and they just said it wasn't their fault. The next morning power & water were back but the lift was still out of order so we had to drag our cases down 3 flights of stairs, bypassing a drink with ice cubes that had been spilled but not cleared up. I also felt that the hotel wasn't particularly secure from outsiders venturing in.
