“Good value, Great Service”
Reviewed 14 July 2013

We booked this hotel via Trivago and got a good discount.
Can't fault the staff for their friendliness and helpful attitude. We had a warm welcome, every time we walked past a member of staff they smiled and said hello, checked we were enjoying our stay.
Our room was very hot because it was a heatwave, and the receptionist Dianne sourced a fan for us and had it brought up to our room, even though everyone was busy dealing with two simultaneous wedding parties that evening!
Barry the maitre d' was very personable and friendly, breakfast was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. You can tell that the employees enjoy their job and like working with people.
My boyfriend and I live in London, this was his first trip to my home town of Leeds, very impressed with the staff.
The hotel is in a lovely setting; walking distance to the beautiful Goldenacre Park and a short drive to Headingley and Leeds City Centre or Otley.
Our room was one of the studios (11) above the corporate hospitality centre; even though a wedding function was in full swing when we returned from our evening out, we had no trouble getting to sleep after midnight when the disco finished.
The room could have done with air conditioning but was clean, bathroom was spotless and the maids brought fresh towels and made the bed up. We felt secure leaving our things in the room when we went out.
The fitness centre was a nice addition to our stay - we used the swimming pool, which was the perfect temperature. There is a whirlpool, and a lovely little steam room and sauna. Changing rooms were clean with plenty of showers.
For what we paid, we were completely satisfied with the facilities. Couldn't fault it really.
Good value, in a beautiful spot. Will come again!

An excellent reception on arrival with the minimum of fuss on check in. On departure at 05:00 the night manager ensured our pre booked taxi was sorted and we took somebody else's that had failed to wake on time so we arrived at LBIA with plenty of time. Room perfect for the price with parking for a trip abroad thrown in. No problems with car parking despite a wedding taking place. Only downside was the lack of aircon on what must have been one of the hottest nights of the year. Ignore guests previous comments about the TV menu it doesn't take long to work out. Just so future guests are aware it's about £12 each way to the airport. Can only say all staff that we met were first rate, keep it up.

The staff in this hotel are all very friendly each and everyone we came across was chatty and polite. Rooms spacious and pool relaxing. Bar area very nice. Didn't eat here but the menu looked good. Parked the car here and left it whilst we went on holiday, taxi to airport organised by hotel. Thank you for a great stay. will be back again soon

The facilities and rooms indicate this may once have a typical chain 4* hotel, but as others have said it is rather jaded, hence it’s current 3* status. There is no chance of it becoming 4* (again?) without aircon, new bathrooms and a general spruce up.
That said the rooms were spacious and clean and by no means scruffy, just a little tired. (No pun intended!). Others have commented about housekeeping and I have to admit some lessons in bedmaking would be in order.
Staff everywhere were polite and helpful throughout our stay.
Breakfast was a good hot & cold buffet. The evening meals were of a much higher standard than would normally be expected in this type of hotel. However the cheapest menu, "Todays", which didn’t change while we were there, started at £19 for 2 courses, really not good value. And even ordering from the main menu they didn’t even give you a bread roll, although there was a side plate for it!

The main criticisms must be aimed at the “backroom”, i.e Mercure admin.
Beware the modern in-room TV, which starts by announcing “Music, tv channels, Internet, movies - Access for one price £11.00” Hang on to your money, the TV is in free.
The user menu is clunky and labyrinthine, not very user friendly at all. And the “News” text service can only be described as surreal.
Parking was a nightmare, really difficult late afternoon and non-existent during functions. There are plenty of parking spaces, but it would appear they’ve sold all the prime places in front of the hotel for airport parking.
And finally booking. The online system, and even my confirmation, referred to a 3 nights for the price of 2 deal. If you find out how to get this let me know! And to add insult to injury the confirmation clearly stated package included cream tea, which the Reception had never heard of, any anyway they don’t serve teas!

To end on a positive note we had a back room in the North wing. It overlooked the wood of Golden Acre Park (well worth a visit, it stretches in a massive arc from the East of the hotel, crossing under the A660 right round to the West) and there was only minimal traffic noise. And, most remarkably, even though one night there was a wedding, with disco, and two parties, there was no disturbance in our room other than a couple times when guests let their room doors slam shut. However, where they all parked I’ve no idea!

Room Tip: Our North wing back room was peaceful and a reasonable size.

Dear Grumbleweed. With a username such as this, I did wonder how your review would pan out.... However, thank you for your review and your reward of a 4 star after your visit with us. In these economic times we are unfortunately unable to install airconditioning in all of our bedrooms, and as such we do rely on our full sized patio doors to provide cooler air in the bedrooms, especially when the weather is so hot and humid at present. We are currently working on clarifying the wifi and movie package collateral in the bedrooms in order to simplify this as at times it can be confusing so please bear with us until this new collateral is replaced in the bedrooms. I am very pleased with your comments regarding our staff friendliness, levels of service and food quality (so thank you!) and the hotel grounds, leading into Golden Acre Park which is Leeds' premier parkland - a great place to visit! Kind regards, and once again thank you for such a pleasant review. Stewart Woodeson

At wedding last weekend and stayed here for 2 nights. Yes some parts are tired and in need of refurbishing, decoration and carpets jaded a bit, but the whole atmosphere and staff make up for all of this. Food was excellent, we had dinner the first night and it was really good, good breakfast choice as well. Wedding venue was good, again the staff were very helpful and always there in the background. If there is a gripe it is that the bedrooms were very hot and a bit uncomfortable, the radiator and towel rail were on all the time in everyone's room and as it was quite warm weather we really didn't need this. Perhaps it's something that the hotel can address.
So all in all a fantastic weekend. Can't sing praises of all staff members enough and reception staff will remember looking after the giraffe!!
Thank you everyone involved.

Room Tip: rooms overlooking park are the quietest

We did not get off to a good start here as room allocated to us had not been serviced, after a while we got another room and unfortunately this was the same, but due to the staff, Diane on the front desk and another , unfortunately I didn't get his name handled the situation very well and did everything possible to sort things for us we were given a complimentary drink in the bar till a room was found and the young man hauled our baggage from one room to the next for us. Under the circumstances I feel they did their best and cannot complain, it was just one of those things. Think management need to look at housekeeping !
