What a great hotel! The staff were really friendly and helpful. We were immediately upgraded to a suite, which was excellent. The room was clean and well equipped. There was no audible noise from other rooms. We had an excellent nights sleep and will definitely consider visiting again when we're in the area.

Stayed at the hotel in June and had a very unfortunate incident as I got stuck in the lift first thing in the morning. Took 40 minutes of no one knowing what to do - thankfully a colleague came to the rescue and made the manager call the fire brigade - no apology or outcome of investigation - so beware.

Room very nice and service good but food awful

Dear Gabi B

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your stay, I was very sorry to learn that not everything went according to plan and would like to apologise for the frustrations caused. Unfortunately the hotel did experience issues with the lift which were out of our control but please be assured that the management team were aware of the issue and were following procedures to evacuate you from the lift. I believe too that you spoke directly with the Operations Manager David Jones who apologised on behalf of the hotel.

I do hope that this one off experience has not tainted your view of the hotel and would welcome the opportunity to restore your faith in our hotel.

Kind regards

I'm sure The Queens Hotel was once a beautiful, grand hotel - perhaps in the 1950s. However, it is now in serious need of refurbishment - not only of its physical attributes but also of its service.

I arrived to find a queue for the reception - had to wait 15 minutes to check in. This may not seem a long time but its very frustrating when there is a guy wearing top hat and tails showing people how to get out of a car and walk in a door but then there aren't enough receptionists to deal with check-ins. Advice: get rid of the pointless, outdated guy in the tired outfit that has clearly been dry cleaned dozens of times and use the funds to hire more reception staff.

Once I was checked in, I was pleasantly surprised to be told I had been upgraded to a club room .... until I saw the room!!! I was told that a club room is on the 'club floor' and gives access to the 'club lounge' where there are free refreshments between 8pm and 10pm and a continental breakfast in the morning. In addition, the contents of the mini bar were free. This sounded lovely.

However, the reality is that the 'club floor' is old and tired, smells musty and the room was small and stank of smoke. Disgusting. The mini bar contained a small carton of milk and an aircraft sized red wine!! Given that I don't drink alcohol the generosity overwhelmed me. The bed was a double.

So I went back downstairs, queued at reception and asked to be 'downgraded' to the junior suite I had booked. I was told this was fine but I needed to go back to my room, collect my belongings and come back down to reception to swap keys!

I did this, queued at reception for a third time and picked up my keys to room 600. It's now 45 minutes since I first arrived.

I'm pleased to say that this was much larger, didn't smell, had better, brighter décor, a king-sized bed and was a great improvement. The problem is that the room was still tired and shabby - dirty, rusted old window frames, scuffed, flaking paintwork. poor lighting, aged, grubby net curtains, tired looking sofa, tiny old-fashioned TVs, drawer that didn't open properly, sad old ironing board etc etc etc. It was like staying in a granny's house that hasn't changed for forty years (no offence to all the aged grannies out there).

In addition, the windows didn't open and the net curtains were fixed in position (well until I climbed on a chair, unhooked them and pulled them back!) Thankfully, a previous, presumably frustrated, occupant had actually broken the window frame of the secondary double glazing to force a small gap and opened the outer window. Perhaps management could visit a few, modern high rise hotels that have limiters on their windows to allow fresh air in.

It's a similar story in the public areas - the carpets are aged (and needed a good vacuuming) and the lifts are old with worn floors/doors and brass that needs a good polish.

Generally the staff were quite friendly although disappointing to hear the room service guy outside a bedroom door saying "oh for god's sake fold you pile of s**t"!!!!! He was referring to the newspaper that he was delivering ..... and was very surprised when he turned and saw me!

Overall, my second room was acceptable. The bed was very comfortable and the shower hot.

But with the choice of hotels in central Leeds, there are plenty that have made it into the 21st century and give far better value for money.

Room Tip: Avoid the club rooms - in fact book a room with modern facilities in an alternative hotel.

Apart from location this hotel has very little to offer. I stayed 2 nights . The first room allocated was miserable I then paid to upgrade to a suite ??? not much better.
Old fashioned and shabby would not survive in a less convenient location.
Definitely would not stay again.

Room Tip: Would surprise me if there are any.

This hotel is a joy to stay in. Old fashion style and service. The customer service is excellent. Rooms lovely décor and very clean. Location couldn't be better for a Leeds City break. Would be my first choice again for a stay in Leeds.

Room Tip: Front room over looking city square and high up for a good view.

Very good welcome and efficient check in, but it all went a bit down hill from there. My room was a bit grubby, and as the air conditioning wouldn't work I managed to open a balcony window a couple of inches out of a window frame covered in years of dust and grime.

The bar is very smart, and the hot buffet breakfast was very good, only to be spoilt by the dreaded course salt and peppercorn grinders, and a waitress taking my plate whilst I was still eating. She may just as well have said 'your times up, you can go now'!

I'd mark it average at best, and I never stay at average hotels twice.

Room Tip: Ask to inspect it first!

Not stayed here for around 4 years but a regular leeds visitor. Decided to try the hotel and allocated a family room that actually had a full sitting area not unlike a suite.

Nice touch and unexpected but a good price and superb breakfast served in the room. Even the toast was hot unlike many room service experiences in other hotels.
