“Excellent Weekend!”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

We recently spent a lovely weekend in this hotel. On arrival we got a complimentary glass of wine and a complimentary upgrade to a Directors Room, overlooking the river. Lovely spacious room with all the original features. Excellent service. Excellent breakfast - both variety and quality - probably the best I have had. We would highly recommend it!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the river if possible!

We stayed here for 2 nights, paying £127 for room only for the 2 nights, which is excellent value. It cost another £80 for parking and breakfasts. During the week it seems about double this price, which would make it good, rather than excellent value.

(Note about parking: the website says 'ample parking', which is disingenuous, as it is a 100m walk to the NCP car park (£15 per day), or street traffic meters, which means feeding with coins before 8am.)

Quirky boutique hotel with a nice feel. Our room was comfortable with nice touches, like fudge, short bread and Smarties! Fresh milk for tea upon request. Each room has a little hatch for passing service, which is very discrete!

The bathroom was fine, but some features are showing their age, like the Aqualisa showers, which, though competent, looked dated.

The room was reasonably quiet but some noise from the Brewery Wharf, which is a trendy spot over the river. The duvets were too hot, and there was no way to reduce bed linen except remove the duvet from its cover, which then was too cold. I ended up with the dressing gown on top, which was about right!

The hotel is at the eastern end of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal (Liverpool 127 miles), and we had a nice walk along it for a couple of miles. The Calls used to be a notorious part of Leeds, but it pretty 'hip' now. We ate at the tapas bar next door but one, which was surprisingly good. There is also a brasserie at 44, The Calls, which we didn't try.

Breakfasts are comprehensive and good value, especially the cooked one at £14.95; you really don't need lunch after this!

Staff were friendly and offered a complimentary glass of wine on arrival.

All in all, a very enjoyable short stay in Leeds.

Room Tip: River view rooms are apparently quieter, though still some noise from the footbridge over the river...

Great small hotel in a fantastic location. Lovely service, interesting decor and the room was pleasantly decorated too. No electric sockets in the main part of the room which was a little inconvenient but other than that, great.

Would definitely stay again.

Had to stay in this hotel due to work. My employer booked and paid for a room.
Only strange thing here is because they require a full amount to be paid again, when you check in in case you use any drinks. A bit inconvenient because I was short of cash in my account and after they took the full fee (again), my bank account was two days in overdraft, £-15 and I didn't realise this, so bank charged my an additional £15 fee due to be in minus. Just too complicated without reason.

I'd recommend 42 The Calls to anyone; we decided to book a room rather than had back to the countryside after a night out. We had a lovely room, the staff were great and the food was delicious! It was a fantastic night.

I went last night with a friend and had a lovely stay. The room was large super clean and comfortable. There were nice details ie homemade cookies, fudge and a free glass of wine. The bed was comfortable and had quality bedding. The shower was brilliant too. Reception was efficient and friendly and the hotel is close to the centre. Overall a brilliant stay. Thank you 42 The Calls we hope to visit again soon.

Small hotel with interesting design. staff friendly though they were unable to Allocate a room away from the street noise , this was a prime request and street noise did not stop until 3am.
Corridor carpets worn, fire exits not obvious cleaners cupboards doors left open despite signs saying fire door keep shut. Bedroom windows dirty as were the frames.washbasin would not drain away , w.c very slow in flushing.reception advised on the first day of 2 nights nothing done.
We would look elsewhere on another visit.
