“Promoting sunday upgrade but does it exist?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014 via mobile

Applied for upgrade on the Calls website as instructed. Asked if many rooms booked and told no so cant understand why we werent upgraded. More concerning was off hand reception - there is a big difference between service with a smile and service with indifference.

So onto the hotel itself - carpet in main corridor fraying and needs replacing and chairs in room very worn.

Unfortunately42 The Calls seems tired and perhaps an overhaul rather tha upgrade. Such a shame as this was one of the first boutique hotels we stayed in 15 years ago and it had the WoW factor then but now.....?

I simply needed a hotel in Leeds for the night.

i heard of The Calls, meant to be a bit quirky but good.
The Calls is by the canal and is a part of Leeds which has been revitalised in the last few years.

So there are a few bars,Tapas and a few coffee shops nearby

I turned up at 8pm, got a room overlooking the front, ie the road

Nice room, decent size, comfortable bed and very nice bathroom

a few welcoming sweets were also available

Only issue was the noise from the street the next morning, but I start work at 5.30 am each weekday so was up already

would stay again but ask for a room at the back

Room Tip: Room at the back

If you're looking for a generic hotel room that you get from any of the major chains this isn't the one for you. If you want loads of little individual details and something different this is it. Very comfortable room with great staff. Good views over the quayside and near plenty of bars and restaurants. The breakfast is to die for.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view

The location is perfect. Rooms were nice when they were first done, they look like they need a bit of love. The breakfast is,ridiculously over priced. The continental breakfast is simply fruit, cereal and bread. Not a meat or cheese in sight. There's no toaster and when the croissants ran out I felt I was being awkward asking for more. I think the staff should keep their eye on the buffet and ensure its full. It was a Monday and there were only 4 customers to serve. The full breakfast was served cold and was brought to the kitchen within 5 mins, this was too quick to even cook the egg from scratch. That should be a simple task for the price they charge. If we stay again, which is doubtful, I'll go to nearby cafe and eat a real breakfast.

Fantastic hotel in a great location, quirky and different. When we checked in the receptionist said we had her favorite room (I had requested river view) and it didn't disappoint - Room 304 is the only room with an alcove over the river and is the main picture shown for the hotel (as above), has bear brick walls, beams in the ceiling and the original winch still in place from when it was a corn mill. The receptionist was nice and welcoming, also little touches made a difference like a glass of wine on arrival and sweets in the room.
Located right next to the bridge over the river and a 5 min walk to the city center, bus and train stations. Great places to eat and drink all round and a quick walk down the river bank to the armouries. Don't miss breakfast! Full English with a choice of sausages
Will definitely stay there if we go to Leeds again.

Room Tip: Room 304!!

Just back from a night at the hotel! Great location, very helpful staff and lovely little extra touches! Glass of wine on arrival, cupcake, homemade biscuits and frog soaps! Fantastic selection for breakfast, quirky but lovely rooms with everything you could need. Great base to explore Leeds, and tucked out of the way to enjoy a quieter time! Definitely going back!

WE wanted to celebrate our Golden Wedding with our extended family of about 35 people. We tried several "wedding venues" in the Huddersfield area but did not find anything to our liking (business must be good as only two of five contacted bothered to reply). So we settled on 42 The Calls. From the outset we had very helpful suggestions from the hotel but they were also very flexible on accommodating our requirements. Several of us sent two or three nights in the hotel. Don't be put off by the low visual impact of the entrance. Inside, this former flour mill has been transformed into a number of rooms all with individual characteristics and of varying sizes but all, insofar as the dreaded Health and Safety permit, have retained many original features. When I was a lad this area and the river were really run down and filfthy: not anymore. The riverside rooms now provide good views of the rehabilitated river (but unfortunately the windows cannot be opened more than a couple of inches presumably due to the H&S restrictions). Come the big day for the formal lunch we were supposed to have the River Room (mainly used for breakfasts) but the staff on duty proposed that we use the Conference Room on the top floor instead. Perfect! They transformed it from a Conference setting to a Dining one in less than two hours. We had spent much time on choosing the menu (starter, hot and cold buffet, dessert) and these were beautifully cooked, presented and served. Not one of the 35 hard headed and demanding Yorkshire and Scots folk could find ault with either the accommodation or the meal. We hall not be there for iur Cebtenary Weeding celebration but some of the Greatgrandchildren might be there for their Goldens. Very well done 42 The Calls.. f
