“The Malmaison Leeds is great value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2009

I've stayed at a number of Malmaison hotels and whilst this one hasn't been refurbished for a while, I still think it represents great value for money. Its location is good and the furnishings are still clean and contemporary.
We stayed on a City Slicker package, which included dinner, wine and the room for a great price. The meal itself was fantastic and rather than just limiting you to a set menu, they allow you to deduct the cost of the set menu from the bill if you choose A la Carte instead. The service was very good throughout and the staff friendly and helpful.
I noticed on a couple of other reviews that people have complained about the darkness in the bar and restaurant, but I think it's quite cosy.
The room was a good size, with a nice view of the river and with the usual toiletries and bits and pieces you'd expect from a Malmaison. Everywhere was clean and tidy.
Parking, as mentioned in other reviews, is in a Q Park near the hotel (2 minutes' walk). It cost about £14 to park overnight and the next day, but I think it's fairly typical of city centre hotels to expect you to pay for parking nowadays.
The Malmaison Leeds may not be the best Malmaison in the chain, but its price reflects that and it represents very good value for money.

I stayed at this hotel for one night on a business trip. I was looking forward to the stay as I'd passed the hotel many times while in Leeds and it looks great from the outside and is central for shopping/entertainment/business. What a disappointment. Small no frills reception, dark poorly lit bar, small bedroom. Wifi only available in bar; only first 30 mins free. The main thing that lets the hotel down is the poor quality of staff service. In the bar it was clear the staff had no idea what they were doing. About 5 mins after I ordered a large glass of Merlot the waitress returned to tell me they don't serve it by the glass. Ordered a taxi through reception and they failed to tell the taxi driver I was waiting or me the taxi driver had arrived. At breakfast I'm informed they have no white bread. Yes, NO WHITE BREAD! This is at 7.00 am so they couldn't have run out during that sitting. Ordered smoked salmon and scrambled eggs to be told they have no smoked salmon. Suggested they pop over the road where there is an open deli and get some only to be told they can't do that.
All this may seem insignificant but it is often the quality of service which marks one hotel from another. I just got the impression the staff weren't trained to provide good service and didn't notice when they were providing poor service.
That's the last time I'll stay at Malmaison. The competition for good quality city centre hotels is intense and I've just decided to take my business elsewhere

This hotel is lovely and very much in keeping with the Malmaison brand. Our room was very nice and the staff have sprinkled rose petals on our bed and left an anniversary card in our room as we had informed them we were celebrating. The restaurant was lovely and staff very efficient, providing to your every need. We would definately stay in this hotel again. The only negative point is there is no parking available and you can park in the nearby NCP which you receive a 10% discount on but this still cost us over £12 to park for an overnight stay and could be awkward if you have a lot of luggage.

Stayed in here for 1 night with high expectations following good stays at other Malmaison hotels. The location is good for the shops etc but the service wasnt great, the room was pretty small and nothing special. After a walk round the shops we wanted to watch a dvd in the room before going down to dinner in the restaurant. Dvd player didnt work, engineer called who couldnt get it to work so he brought us another one, which didnt work either! We gave up at this point. On the plus side the meal we had in the restaurant was delicious which made up for it.

Went for my Mum's 60th Birthday. The food was wonderful (and local) and so to was the service. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped. All the staff were friendly and attentive. The Sunday supplement rate is brilliant!

While the location and rooms are good (not excellent), whenever we stay there is always something wrong. Either the keycard doesn't work or the room is noisy. They also take the room charge plus £50 deposit as a 'hold' from your account without telling you this is what they are going to do. Along with this 'held' amount they take the room amount - more than doubling what you thought would be taken (and therefore unavailable) from your account.

I thnk they seriously need to "up" their game to compete with other Hotesl of similar pricing.

Something about this hotel makes is 'just ok' for me.....sounds funny but I can't put my finger on it but everything is simply ok. I have stayed in better hotels.
I don't think it's all it's made out to be, however is central and good for shopping. Breakfast is served until 11am at the weekend which is a plus. Contrary to other reviews on here, we found the reception staff to be most helpful and friendly.
Would suggest a stay at the new City Inn instead.

(NB free internet is only for 30mins, otherwise it costs £7.50 for 8hrs (not wifi - you need to plug in) City Inn is wireless and free internet
