“Like stepping back in time”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

This venue is a little tired, but a lovely example of an old time music hall. The front of house staff (presumably volunteers) were all exceptionally welcoming, and couldn't do enough to help you. The bar is inconveniently located on the top floor, although there is a small concession stand at the rear of the stalls.

Following its renovation the theatre is an attraction in itself. However the rock and roll panto is a real treat and a highlight of any Yorkshire families festive period.

“History in the viewing”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

this is a lovely old theatre, recent renovated (much needed) but the character of the place has not been lost, a lovely setting with some very ornate plaster work.
made famous in the 1960's for the televised show with Barney Colehan, this little theatre gets some great acts and is also used by Local theatre companies.

This place is brilliant. There is so much history in the City Varieties and you can taste it. Just entering the building gives you goosebumps.
