“In love with this place”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

I think it's fair to say that there are dozens of places around University where you can order your lunch but this is by the far the best place you can go.

The service here is always friendly and warm, always service with a smile.

Their selection of sandwiches is just mindblowing - with ingredients including Stilton, beetroot, chili jam, manchego, proscuitto, chorizo, salami, smoked mackerel - Pickards are serious about good food and brilliant combinations of flavour. There are sold at very good prices considering the high quality ingredients and the fact that the sandwiches are all made on premises - you can see them baking the bread at the back of the tea room.

To wash these sandwiches down are a fantastic array of teas - various types of White, Green, Black, Oolong, Mint and Fruit teas which are displayed on a huge chalk board. My favourite is Arctic Fire, I think it's definitely a good starting point to get you hooked on the tea here.

They also play some really good music here, it's a nice play to come for lunch, breakfast or a catch up with friends.

Quite understandably, this place gets flooded with students during peak lunch times so I recommend you trying to ahead of this rush or arriving slightly after (if you don't mind not necessarily being able to snag the best sandwiches).

The brownies, muffins and cakes are also just as great as the sandwiches - I had the lime cake the other day which was very impressive.

Highly recommend this place to anyone in the area.

“A welcome respite from University food”
Reviewed 4 July 2013

Spent a couple of days at a conference at Leeds university opposite, where during the break they served abominations called coffee and ruined perfectly normal tea bags by tepid water. This small tea room offers (for take-away or staying in of you find space) a great variety of reasonably priced, well prepared teas (exotic and run of the mill ones: went through 7 of them during 3 days...), and a nice assortment of sweets and lots of great sandwiches. Great. And avoid what the university offers you.

“One of the best places to get lunch in the University area”
Reviewed 18 June 2013

This tea room is a hidden gem! What makes Pickard's so unique is it serves all kinds of unique homemade sandwiches from 'smoke mackerel + chili gooseberry jelly with spinach' and 'houmous + road mix vegetables with sea salt crystals and rocket' to 'beetroot + mozzerella with onion marmalade, toasted sesame seeds + watercress' and 'Red Leicester + rustica tomatoes with smoked paprika + chili butter + watercress'! The best news is they're so reasonably priced; £2.40 is very competitive considering they're all homemade.

I'd also recommend stopping for a hot drink or even a cake - the chocolate and turkish delight brownies are gorgeous. The service is fantastic too - really kind people work there.

I'm not entirely sure why it comes up here on TripAdvisor as a 'pop-up' tearoom as it has been anchored there for a good 2 years... and let it continue that way!
