Man Behind The Curtain was a lovely experience, the restaurant is super stylish, the loft space and decor as carefully detailed as a Peter Greenaway film set. The music was well chosen too and atmospheric, but not obtrusive.
The chef's working quietly and diligently in the open at the far end was intriguing and added to the sense of theatre. It put me strangely in mind of watching priests operating at the high alter during a church service.
There are only three of them, dealing with the 40 or so covers, and they augment the barman, front of house, Sommelier and two stylish waitresses by bringing some of their creations (there were 10 fixed courses in all) to your table personally.
Service was prompt, detailed and stylish, but also friendly enough to put you at ease before the various wines complete the task
Each set of cutlery arrives pre-course in a presentation box, which heightens the sense of anticipation and each plate (or wooden spoon, or silver antlers) is entirely unique to its own particular dish.
The pre-dinner cocktails are excellent, as is the wine-pairing flight, which is not bad value at about £20 per head.
Table spacing is very generous, so you are aware of other people, but they do not impinge on your intimacy.
The evening view over Leeds is great to start with, and the space is very white, light and airy. Then you become more isolated in your personal pool of light as the evening darkens, which is all good.
I particularly liked the Ox cheek, the cod loin, the hot & cold pea soup, but in all the dishes I appreciated the sheer attention to detail involved in perfecting and blending the various disparate flavours, colours, temperatures and textures, coupled with the artistic presentation of just about everything.
Some of the pairings were very unusual, but most of it worked really well. My only reservation would be the portions are tiny. The prices, befitting a restaurant of this class, are not.
All in all we had a great time and would definitely go back again after they have refreshed the fixed menu with a new set of items (not sure how often this is planned to happen).
