A beautiful setting. Helpful NT members in house rooms to explain the history etc.
Service in restaurant slow, mainly due to poor technology I.e. card machine.

“A breath of fresh air for stately homes”
Reviewed 27 July 2014 via mobile

We have been here 5 or 6 times with our kids and various groups from friends to family. There is lots to do, exploring the stone circles in various different fields, having a lovely ice cream from the village shop (Marshfields), dressing up and colouring in in the barn, running around the gardens, a play area with toy tractors, frisbees, space hoppers, then in the house my kids can spend hours in the kitchen making various concoctions from the large bowls of oats, flour, coffee grounds etc that they can mix up when fully dressed up in their kitchenmaid outfits. They also love the huge domed princess bed and the secret door and old fashioned toilet. There are little quizzes for kids to hunt for the answers around the house.
We will return here many times.

“Disappointing for me, great for families”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

As a local I hadn't visited the manor before & thought it long overdue. Temper your expectations accordingly & you won't be as disappointed as I. There is little of original value & the house has been recreated in a mish-mash of styles. The benefits of this are that there is nothing of any huge value so everyone is encouraged to sit at the dining table or lie on the bed which it can be interactive fun for the children although I would guess only for about 1/2 hour or so. There are signs that the garden might one day be worthy of a visit but several years away yet. Staff were all fantastic & did encourage best use of the visit. Also at £9 per adult (don't let them bully you into the gift aid price - they won't tell you about it if you don't enquire properly) & the museum (which we didn't visit) at £4.40 - I think this is overpriced. Avebury has a great deal to offer - you can visit the stones & village for free & I would suggest you do that, I believe that a tour of the stones is quite reasonably priced

“A lovely surprise”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

I'm not a great fan of Stately Homes and had really come to Avebury (on my own) to see the stones and henge. However, I thought I'd have a look at the Manor and I'm very glad I did. I won't go through the history / description here, as other reviewers have done that perfectly adequately. I do recommend a visit: the whole complex, associated museum (separate charge), cafe etc. are first rate and there's plenty for small children to do. Visiting the Manor involves buying a ticket for a particular time slot: you're not rushed round once you're inside, but this system helps to avoid crowding. The volunteer guides are excellent and the atmosphere is relaxed enough for small children to enjoy themselves (within reason!) After viewing the house, you can wander round the magnificent gardens: but don't miss out on the tearoom! The cream teas are to die for! Now back to my diet.

“What a surprise”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

We did enjoy this NT property with a difference. I've never visited anywhere before where you were positively encouraged to try the beds chairs etc and to touch things. It was enormous fun.

But the rooms too were fascinating. I'd have enjoyed it even as a classic NT property. We were sorry to miss the Tudor rooms - closed due to possible collapse of ceiling,

I have since got hold of the BBC DVD of 'The manor re-born' just to extend my enjoyment. If you didn't see the programmes and are planning a visit, I'd recommend getting the DVD to maximise your pleasure in the visit.

We loved the gardens topiary and vegetable too.
