This is THE place to stay in Avebury, as the archaeologist Sir John Lubbock decided when he was working on the stone circle and Silbury Hill in the 1870s. Today The Lodge has everything you could wish for: a stunning view over the stone circle from your room, genial and friendly hosts, Andrew Blackall and his wife, very comfortable beds, and a great breakfast.

This place was really not what we expected. We'd stopped off in Avebury before to have a look at the stone circle (fantastic) but had not really got a sense of quite how small the village is.

The Lodge B&B is located right inside the circle (as is most of the village) which means you get tremendous views from the bedroom windows and the breakfast room. In addition, you can also see Silbury Hill from the upstairs window.

We stayed in the Pelmet Room which had a separate bathroom (down the hall, not en-suite) but this wasn't a problem. The room itself had a splendid grand feel to it with its antique furniture and is hung with paintings and tapestries. The bed was very comfy (we slept superbly both nights) and the room contained everything you would expect from a B&B of this standard - TV, tea and coffee etc.

The bathroom was spacious and contained a separate bath and shower. Some more paintings in this room including a David Roberts print of the Gizah plateau which we loved as we spent our honeymoon in Egypt. An excellent bathroom to chill-out in.

Breakfast was excellent both days. My wife is a vegan and was well looked after. I'm a carnivore who will happily eat vegetarian if the food is nice enough - and it was. I had a huge cooked breakfast which demanded a post-prandial walk around the stones.

The Blackall family were lovely hosts - funny and warm - and we would definitely stay here again. In addition, Avebury is a superb National Trust site with interesting museums and some tremendous walks with loads to see.

This is an excellent place to stay right with in Avebury and within the standing stone circle. You can wake in the morning and see the stones, you can wander to your hearts content and even wonder the very small village at night. The night we wondered around there was a church bell concert, it was beautiful and added to the asmosphere of a cool fall evening.

Andrew and family are wonderful hosts. He has a good amount of knowledge about stone circles. Breakfast was great, only wish we could have stayed longer.

The room was spacious and the views were great. I highly reccomend this B & B when visiting the Avebury area.

Perfect location, room and hosts. If you want to visit Avebury stay here and enjoy it in the evening and early morning when everyone else is gone. Have a picnic in the henge and watch the sun go down. Andrew is the perfect host and made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was superb.

There are only two places to stay in Avebury, location of England's less famous but infinitely more tourist friendly, stone circles, and by default we ended up here. Of course, when staying at a small place (only two rooms) such as this one, your host becomes particularly important, and The Lodge has a host second to none in Andrew Blackall. Besides being up on his stone circles in both the old and new worlds (and in his own backyard), an exceptionally engaging and sly sense of humor should keep you laughing as he takes you on a verbal tour of the area.

The rooms in the lovely Georgian house are spacious, quite a treat versus the normal tight European quarters, and very comfortably furnished. The location of the house is more than perfect, putting right in the middle of the stone circle - just look out your window early in the morning as the mists rise between the stones; spooky, isn't it? Breakfast is ample, and Andrew whips up a great omelette. After breakfast, walk among the stones. Or better yet, walk them at dusk, a much more atmospheric experience.

The Lodge is a great place to stay, your hosts make it even better. (One word, if visiting from the U.S., the Blackalls would love for you to bring american-style grape jelly and/or pretzels. Apparently it's done better "across the pond.")
