“Smart but comfy”

Selected this because it was near enough to the city to walk (1.5 miles) or bus but not city centre - and was short walk from my best friend, who we were visiting at the same time. Everything I'd expect from an establishment with this ETB grading but personal touches - breakfast in a conservatory on one big table with other guests (if you get up at the same time!), freshly cooked breakfast with home-made muffins, friendly but not in your face owner. Could have booked dinner there (if you say so in advance) but there was also a pub in the village (Duck Inn) that did food as well as all the usual suspects in the city centre. Very comfortable room, spacious bathroom, shared a lounge area with other guests but also had full range of books, TV, DVD in our bedroom. Ideal for a winter city break and I'd like to come here again.

Wonderful little B&B; great food, hostess, decor, free parking, beautiful gardens, quaint church across the fence. A great central base if you have a car to visit Winchester, Bath, Stonehenge, Bristol, Cotswalds, Southhampton - all less than an hour away. This house is in the suburbs, a pub 3 blocks away but that's it; very quiet. If you don't have a car, the city centre is 2.4 miles away (cabbie clocked it). Cab is 6 GBP, bus is 2 GBP - the stop is right in front, but bus stops running at 18:00. Sarah is a super hostess!

Room Tip: Only are 2 rooms - both are great

I travel alot on business and always try not to stay at motels or cold clinical chain hotels.
I had reason to visit Salisbury and researched bed and breakfast places on trip advisor and found this gem. Merivale House has many good write ups but words alone cannot do justice here. The welcome from Sarah's smile alone would melt the heart of the grumpiest traveller and then there are the cakes, scones, brownies or rocy road that are always freshly made. A tranquil study area with an eclectic library and music selection helps to relax before tatefully decorated rooms with soft comfortable beds and bed linen welcome you to a serene repose. All rooms have the essential tv dvd tea and coffee making thingsand more naughty treats. Breakfast is a delight and as varied as you like. Sarah holds nothing back in her effort for your comfort and pleasure and it will always be my first choice place to stay when visiting the region.

Needing a room for one night, and with all my regular options filled due to a conference, we chanced upon Merivale. From now it will be my first option.
I haven't taken the 'B&B' route before, and I normally end up in a chain hotel or similar, where I'll often eat in my room to detach from the corporate world. Sarah at Merivale provides the polar opposite experience. A smiling warm welcome and then I am immediately spoilt with great tea and fresh cakes, an immaculate and comfortable room and a feeling of unconditional welcome greets you.
You are taken away from the office, but you can of course continue to work if you need to. I chose to dine 'en famille' and that too just added to the experience.
Great food, superb company, excellent value. I'll be back... as the bodybuilding Austrian chap once said

I stayed at Merivale House with my husband in September 2010. We had booked for only one night, but loved it so much that we asked to stay for a second and were lucky enough that there was a room available for us.

This is a Georgian property and the two guest rooms have been done very tastefully. Both are en suite, one has a shower and one has a bath. Each room has a tv and dvd player (and dvd selection) as well as tea and coffee facilities. What sets Merivale House apart, however, is the study that is put at the disposal of the guests. There is a cd player, books and magazines and we were served tea and cake here both days by the lovely owner, Sarah. Breakfast is served in the conservatory to your specifications and I believe it is also possible to have dinner there if you ask in advance (I'm sure this would be excellent, based on the evidence of the cakes and breakfast!)

Merivale House is quite probably the loveliest place I've ever stayed and even if you don't have a reason to be in Salisbury, you should invent one just to stay here!
