“Dinner visit....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2014

We visited to have dinner in the restaurant before going onto the Playhouse. We used a Tastecard, so got 50% off the food bill. It would have been a bargain even without the discount.

The service, atmosphere and food were all excellent. We had a fantastic meal from their set menu.

I heartily recommend the pork belly with bacon and black pudding stuffing!

We may be going again next month.

On my recent trip to Salisbury we stayed at the mercure. The hotel was a bit tired and could use some sprucing up. Our first room looked like something out of an 80's movie. We asked for another room (for 25pounds more) and received much better accommodations. The staff was wonderful and very understanding. With a little bit of work this place could be wonderful.

Highly central location, easy access to cathedral via Exeter Gate and 5 mins to the shops. Irritating car park fiasco, wherebvy you need an exit key for each and every time you want to exit, which in our case with complex Xmas logisitics was 5 times a day over 2 days. Surely they can find a different solution? Bizarre layout in the bar (only two high tables). Clientelle mostly 60's-70's for the very reasonable Christmas deal, including my parents in their 80's. NO LIFT and no ground floor rooms. Staff helpful but some of them seems stressed at breakfast which was a bit of a buffet zoo. Masses of choice though, good selection of juices, fresh fruit, full english. Rooms clean, but bathrooms too small. We had a 3rd bed put into our twin room for one child which worked well, but obviously made it more cramped than usual. Rates reasonable.

Room Tip: Be sure your travellers can safely negotiate stairs as there is no lift.

I booked a deal online through kayak and probably got the bargain basement price (it was about 62 pounds - around $100). When we got there, pulling in through the car park at the back (for which they charge you an extra 5 pounds a night, by the way), I wasn't too happy - the front of the hotel is very charming and pretty but the back is a horrible 60's ad-on and it's definitely seen better days. It turned out that we were in the very last room at the end of that addition, next to an emergency exit with a padlock on it.. through swinging doors that were very reminiscent of an old hospital - the room smelled old and musty and the furniture had definitely seen better days. The bathroom had peeling paint and was desperately out of date.. I was beginning to feel that I'd made a terrible mistake. We asked for a better room and the lovely girl on the front desk was very sympathetic and helpful, offered us another room in the same wing.. which of course was just like the one we'd got already. Downstairs again, we discovered that for an extra 20 pounds, we could get bumped up to the next level, which we decided to do. What a difference! A much bigger room, a modern bathroom, everything smelled much better - it was well worth it!

So to cut a long story short, spring for the more expensive room if you can, it makes for a totally different experience!
Pros: Right in the heart of town, only a block or so from the cathedral.
Very friendly and kindly staff
Quite lovely rooms, at least at the mid-level
The fireplace in the lobby makes a nice touch, especially when it's cold out.
Off street parking

Cons: Some of the hotel and the rooms are extremely outdated and run down
There is a nightly charge for parking, even for paying guests
Breakfast is not included with the rooms

Another tip for visitors - be careful when parking in town. I ended up with a 50 pound parking ticket because I parked on a street with pay-to-park spaces, which I didn't notice because it was raining sideways, the sign was above head height and the machine for the tickets was hidden behind a dumpster.

Room Tip: Our not-so-great room was #2. The higher the number, the better the room, I think.
