There are two parts to this hotel, the original and ancient timber-beamed with plaster walls part and the much more recent(1960's) part. If you want the full-on traditional experience, stay in the old part, it dates from the 13th century and is replete with wooden pegged joints, hand hewn beams, angular doorways and creaky floors! The bathrooms, however, are modern and the whole place got an update just a few years ago(since my last stay in 2007) the plumbing and such. Just a two block walk from the Cathedral grounds and perhaps a mile to the train station(so skip the cab and enjoy a beautiful walk either through town or along a park, then through the Cathedral grounds). Service is friendly and very helpful, breakfast is a buffet with several items to choose from, including delicious Wiltshire ham. Not one, but two small pubs to enjoy a pulled pint which also features some local brews. Ample cable tv, wifi and hot water. The beds were typical. Another plus is there is a bus station just outside the hotel. The cute garden/patio area is alongside a picturesque river full of ducks, geese, etc. and last time I was there sheep were grazing on the other side.

Room Tip: All the "old" rooms from the 13th century face the street. There can be a bit of noise int...

Legacy Rose and Crown is smashing. We stayed for a week and hosted our wonderful relative to dinners. Room and board simply delightful. Lovely wait staff, beautiful views from every vantage point, robust English food. Go back in time and lift a pint in the pub. Stay in any of the rooms --all are beautifully modernized.

Close walking distance to all the Salisbury sights - the cathedral, the close, the open-air market, shopping, the Mill side pub, and then some. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: There are a few steps to get down to a room or up to a room, if you stay in the modern section.

This was one of the best hotels we have stayed at. The interior decor of the hotel was very old and charming and immediately appealed to us to the extent that we straight away regretted that we were only staying one night. Staff very friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and it and the bathroom well appointed. Breakfast room gave lovely views over the river. The standard breakfast was an adequate continental one - cooked breakfasts come extra. We would come to Salisbury again just to stay here.

The R & C manages to combine old world style with modern convenience in a comfortable and peaceful setting. Its location is excellent - adjacent to the river and just a 5 minute stroll to the cathedral, but very quiet as all the rooms run parallel to, and either open onto or face, the river. Consequently they are very well 'insulated' from any traffic noise (not that Salisbury could be considered noisy in the evening!). Rooms are either ground or first floor and the entrance to each pair of rooms (i.e. one ground floor, one first floor) is slightly off-set from the main corridor in its own entrance alcove, which has the effect of reducing any noise from other guests going to, or coming from, their rooms.

Rooms themselves are spacious and well appointed with large, comfortable beds, ample strorage, iron and ironing board and large, modern bathrooms. First floor rooms are likely to be quieter as there are no rooms above and it is worth mentioning that whilst my bathroom was immaculate, my colleague (ground floor) said hers was, in her words, 'tired' with some enamel missing from the bath and in need of a lick of paint and she was disturbed by the noise of the guest upstairs showering. Some of the ground floor rooms appear to have access to the attractive river-front patio (can't confirm that they all do), but first floor rooms offer a slightly better view of the river and the cathedral spire.

Breakfast was continental buffet style and the service was exemplary. If you prefer the full English this is at a supplement of £5 but, IMHO, well worth it!

There is a large, private, open air car park to the rear of the property which is free to guests (simply enter your registration number into a touch-screen at reception) and can only be accessed via the hotel entrance.

We only had a one-night stay and didn't eat in the restaurant so unable to comment thereon, but the service we did receive was superb - friendly and efficient at all times. Recommended.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are likely to be quieter (no rooms above) and have a slightly better view

We visited the Rose & Crown today for a celebration lunch with some friends.

The hotel, in my opinion, is in need of a make over internally, the inside is not as "up to date" as the outside. The staff were competant and that really is the best I can say about them, they were certainly not welcoming and certainly not well trained.

I had a beef sunday roast which was nice enough and my wife had the chicken supreme which was also decent. For dessert we both had the apple and berry pie with custard which was below par.
Overall the food was adequate and at £12.99 for 2 courses is reasonably priced.

However this place really lets itself down on the finer details which is a real shame because its setting is very pleasant indeed.

The staff did not look clean or well turned out, one of the waitresses had chipped nail varnish which is not on when serving food. There is no point asking us if our meal is ok when everyone has finished.
But ultimately it was when we asked for coffee after our meal that the lack of training and attention to detail really came to light!
1. One of our party asked for a mint tea, which was greeted with a blank face and an I'm not sure. When he returned he said that they did not have a mint tea but they do have a peppermint tea !
2. The pots of tea and coffee then came out. That was it, we had to ask for cups, we then had to ask for milk and then had to ask for tea spoons, really !!!
3. Lastly a coffee was served with more coffee in the saucer than in the cup and the waitress had the nerve to serve it like that ! Then the coffee (which was suppossed to be a latte) tasted like dishwater.

Overall lovely setting to have a meal in overlooking the river Avon with swans and views of the spire but this place needs a blooming good shake up and a revamp as it could be so much better.

Food - ok, location - lovely, staff - rubbish.

Having just stayed here for 2 night's was disapointed with the food and service. The 1st night of our stay included a 3 course meal, it was very basic and not a lot of choice, when the dessert was served it was the cheesecake which was actually off, but the staff did not handle this very well and did not offer a apology. I think we would have had a better meal at Macdonalds to be quite honest. When we went down for breakfast the next morning there were only 2 members of staff serving, one staff member was really showing the stress on her face and it made you feel uncomfortable to ask for anything. I have to say the actual setting of the hotel is fantastic but shame the service lets this hotel down really badly.

After a long and diverted flight from Tampa to Gatwick via Gander, Newfoundland, I finally made it to England only to have my bags not make it. I took the train from Gatwick to Salisbury and a short walk or taxi ride to the hotel. After talking with Sara (reception) and Peter (General Manager), they pointed me in the direction of new clothes. I didn't make it to the store before they closed and on my way back, Peter came driving by looking for me and took me to another store that was open late so i could buy clothes and supplies until my bags arrived.

Sara is great! She is so friendly and accomodating. I really enjoyed talking with her as I came in and out of the hotel.

The room was awesome! I had a garden room that opened out to a beautiful garden just yards from the avon river where swans and ducks were everyday. I also had a view of the Salisbury Cathedral steeple from my bed. Doesn't get much better than that. The included breakfast was also great.

My total stay was 5 nights and I hated to leave.

If you are looking for a great place to stay in Salisbury, this is it. The price was very reasonable as well.

Don't forget that you are only a few minutes from Stonehenge!!

Room Tip: First floor garden suites are perfect.
