“Great location, great view - after a bad start!”
Reviewed 19 June 2013 via mobile

Arrived early evening for 6 day stay to find Expedia hadn't forwarded our booking to the hotel, which was fully booked for our first two nights. The receptionist was prompt and efficient in finding an excellent alternative (Grasmere House) but Expedia's failure was inexcusable. On our return we were given an excellent room in the modern part of the hotel, with great view across river, with swans, to Cathedral. Reception and restaurant staff were excellent, but housekeeping could have been more thorough.

We stayed at the Legacy Rose and Crown hotel in Salisbury over a long weekend (7th - 10th June). The hotel, being centrally located and overlooking the Avon, is ideal for walking into Salisbury. It is unaffected by traffic noise, affording a peaceful night's sleep, though unfortunately in other respects, it left a lot to be desired.

We paid a total of £325 for Bed and Breakfast, which puts it way above the cost of a budget hotel, yet we received "service" which would have been frowned upon in a budget hotel.

It was a significant disappointment that breakfast was merely "Continental", where all decent quality (and most cheap end) hotels include a cooked breakfast. To be charged an additional £5 for a cooked breakfast which was of minimum quantity and average café quality was an insult and smacks of severe penny pinching.

In the room, we were provided with one small shower gel and similar shampoo, which is insufficient for 2 people having a shower and washing their hair. We had to request some additional containers, which were delivered the following morning, having had to use some of my "emergency supply".

The shower itself was scaldingly hot and the control would not turn any colder. It took a lot of force on the very loose control to eventually turn down the heat to nearly bearable. I reported this to reception and no action was taken to repair it. This could have been damaging to a child and should have been checked and rectified before the room was made available for guests. The following evening I spent more time and again significant force to turn the control back further to the point where the hot override button released itself, and still further to get it cool enough to use comfortably. The force required was such that I was concerned the control would sheer off, but as no-one had repaired it, what choice did I have.

The towels were (unnecessarily) changed on Saturday and Sunday, but the bed was not made, the empty tissue box was not replenished and the room was not cleaned.

Checkout on Monday was a disaster, and the poor receptionist, who had come in on her day off, having been working on her own for only a week, was close to tears. The bill was wrong and included an evening meal and drinks on the Saturday evening's dinner dance which we did not book and therefore did not attend. The computer system crashed whilst the girl was trying to correct the bill and when she re-booted the machine, it displayed error messages which prevented her from continuing with the transaction.

We accepted a photocopy of the bill with a promise of a refund to my credit card for £10 in recognition of the lack of room service. We had wasted around 30 minutes by then so we thanked the girl for her valiant efforts and left, for the long drive home.

Whether this refund has been applied or not, I do not yet know, but considering the lack of room service, the un-rectified scalding shower and the charging for breakfast, I consider this inadequate compensation.

It would appear from Trip Advisor that our experiences were not unusual, judging from the many derogatory remarks left by other guests. Why have the standards therefore not been raised to those of other hotels in a similar price bracket when you receive these negative reviews?

This was our 9th visit to this hotel; we usually visit it once a year. This time we booked one of the executive rooms to get a good view of the gardens and the cathedral. The check in was friendly and efficient and the room, number 16, was really excellent. It was spacious and decorated to a good standard. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom very clean. The view of the gardens and cathedral was really splendid and worth the premium. The only problem we encountered with the room was the room above which had very noisy and creaky floorboards.

The location of the hotel is a big plus. It is situated behind the cathedral making on a fairly quiet road. The walk to the shops is very enjoyable along the private road leading to the cathedral.

The breakfast on both mornings.was disappointing. I don't consider a £5 supplement per guest for a cooked breakfast unfair, but this was never mentioned by the staff who served us. The continental breakfast was not up to the standard of a hotel of this class . The breakfast cereals were tipped into uncovered bowls which seemed very unhygienic. The waiter bought my toast in a nice silver plated rack, but I was disappointed to see that it was only 1 slice!

The check out was friendly and efficient. Another very good feature of the hotel is the car park which is very large and easy to access.

Room Tip: If you prefer an older, more rustic type of room in the older part of the hotel book a standard room...

nice clean room , comfortable bed not a bad price, breakfast was a bit of a disappointment and extra charge of £5 per person , i was not impressed cheap sausage overcooked bacon cold beans and toast, staff very slow and prob need training in customer service. would of been nice to had a warm welcome but staff seemed rushed.
however we decided to have the evening meal ( prob different staff and poss chef) the menu was a little limited and i fancied the steak but it only came with a blue cheese sauce , so i asked the waitress if i could have a different sauce she said she would ask and came back to ask what sauce i would like , maybe if she had asked first instead of rushing off.. she was a nice friendly lady just lacking in training. i had a diane sauce of which was ok, my partner had the beef in red wine sauce wish i had had his as my steak was overcooked , its a pity as its a lovely hotel and being able to sit outside by the river is so relaxing, all i can say is come on rose and crown step up a gear as it would be a shame to see you go under.

Room Tip: room 7 was nice and comfortable

Lovely room. Mediocre breakfast

We stayed in a double room at The Rose and Crown and found the ground floor room facing the garden to be very comfortable and spacious with a terrace outside and gardens leading down to the river bank. Bit pricey at £144, but Salisbury is a big tourist attraction and the place was full. A very convenient walk to the Cathedral and City Centre - so well placed. The only disappointment was the breakfast. An hotel at this level should really be serving a great breakfast. This was not great. Mediocre is the only way I can describe it. Staff who were slow and lacked training (we felt). The Continental breakfast buffet was okay, but the cooked ‘full English’ was disappointing. Poor quality sausage, average bacon and hash brown. Overcooked fried bread that had been kept warm too long and one egg. Also rather a small portion. We felt the food quality had room for improvement as did the service.

Room Tip: There are old rooms in the main building and newer (probably 1970's) as an annex. We were in th...

I used to live close by, went to the cathedreal School. Was showing my wife the area and the hotel was a great base to travel from. The room room was clean and of a good size. The rest of the hotel has a lot of heart and history. Breakfast could have had more options.
