We booked a 2 night stay at this hotel mainly due to the excellent location by the river.

For a 4 star hotel, the ground floor room no better that a budget Premier Inn - I had cause to complain at reception after breakfast that the bed linen was threadbare in three places. This was of course changed by the same evening!

The restaurant operated the same menu each evening - the food was NOT impressive and was adequate "pub food".The waitress asked did we enjoy our steaks? Our reply was "wev'e had better"
It was amazing to find that only a continental breakfast was the standard offering as a cooked english breakfast attracted an additional charge of £8.95.

The reception check-in was rather slow after a 10 minute wait although 2 people were on duty.

The only redeeming matter concerning our stay was that the stay & Wine package was £99 per person dinner, b&b

Drinks were also very expensive - £8.40 a pint of Peroni Beer!

On the negative side, this hotel looks better than it is. In truth it’s a little tired around the edges and there is a smell of damp and evidence of mould here and there. The restaurant is just OK with the usual pub food type menu and cooked to average standards but there is no innovation here. I think the food and drink is a bit pricy for what it is but I suspect the captive audience here is mainly business.

The positives are that the rooms are clean, well serviced and have all the basics and some nice views of the river. The staff are very good, helpful and friendly and it has good car parking. The continental breakfast is included in most deals as far as I can see although it is very limited. All cooked breakfast items are extra and a little overpriced in my view. I would not go here at full price, it is simply not worth it compared to other hotels in the area but at the special deals it is fine and good value and great for an overnight stay.

Having recently returned from a last minute break away we were pleased we returned to the Rose and Crown Hotel we had stayed there a number of times in the past but decided not to return as the place had gone down hill. Not now we had a lovely room over looking the river and a view over to the Cathedral. The hotel had obviously undergone a complete refurbishment and still is - as some of the paint work around the windows in the room we had still needed repainting.

However, The Manager and staff could not have been more helpful especially Nicki on the Front Desk an asset as first port of call when entering the Hotel.

The continental breakfast was fine for us and set us up for the day.

One very small moan can you please make sure the extractor fan in the bathroom is fixed before our next return - Yes we will be Back!!

The hotel is dated and in need of a refurb. The room was ok (no 27) but had mould in the bathroom and on the bathroom ceiling. The radiator didn't work and there was condensation constantly at the window. Public areas were better and the restaurant had a lovely view of the river. There was a wedding on the Saturday night so we were not able to enjoy this on our second night as residents dinner was served in a function room. The food was nice other than one desert which was a farce, the "baked" Alaska. Also the "baked" Camembert cannot be baked as it arrives in 5 minutes - so this must be microwaved. That being said it was reasonable given the price we paid which was a special deal. If you are paying full price for this you will be disappointed. The best thing about the place is the staff. They are very friendly and extremely helpful.

Room Tip: pay extra for deluxe / riverfront

I got a last minute bargain on this hotel, and from what I saw on the internet, it looked like a real bargain. When we arrived, we found it quite difficult to find a parking space in the hotel car park. Finally we found the very last one available. On entering the hotel, we realised that it was actually much bigger than we thought; we'd thought from the photos on the internet that it was just an olde worlde inn, but it's a full scale hotel. The original inn has been greatly extended, and our room was in the modern part.
On first entering the room, we were impressed by the decor and the beautiful view. It was a garden room, opening onto the pretty garden alongside the river. The room was modern and clean, and there was an ironing board with iron in the wardrobe.
However, there was no bottled water provided, nor was there a fridge.
On closer inspection, though, the duvets were well worn and shabby, and the pillows likewise, flat and hard. The beds were quite comfortable.
The main problems were in the bathroom. Firstly, the lighting was 'subdued' - who comes up with ideas like this, that people prefer subdued lighting in bathrooms??
Secondly, the mirror over the sink is recessed with no lights anywhere near it. So when you're shaving/putting makeup on, you're roughly 6-10 ft away from your image, with dim lighting and no magnifying mirror. A major design fault, especially for those guests with less than perfect sight.
The water pressure is VERY high, but there is a sign by the sink informing you of this. Fair enough. But when I tried to have a shower, the temperature control just wouldn't work. Both me and my husband tried to adjust it, but no joy. It was too hot for me, and for most people I would say, so if a child or older person had stood in the bath and switched on the shower, there could have been a dangerous situation. It was about 9.45pm so nothing could really be achieved by fetching the manager at that time, so I told the reception staff next morning, and was assured that someone would attend to it straight away.
One thing to note is that this hotel does conferences, as was the case when we were there.
This (naturally) led to a shortage of staff in the dining room. The staff who were there did their best, but it was fairly busy, so service wasn't that quick.
The food was NOT impressive. I certainly wouldn't advise eating there if you can avoid it. We got the impression that the chef doesn't 'do' vegetables . . . I ordered fish cakes with poached egg. That's exactly what I got - 2 fish cakes, 2 poached eggs, 1 slice of lemon containing 8 pips. Nothing else at all. My husband had the Trio of Sausages with black pudding mash. He says there was no difference between the sausages, although the menu said there were 3 types. Again, no vegetables. The couple at the next table had steak and chips, and guess what? That's all they got.
Breakfast next morning was average to say the least.
Our overall impression was that it wasn't that different to some Premier Inns we've stayed at.
The main difference is that the Rose and Crown advertises their room rate for an executive room (which we had) as being £190, yes, one hundred and ninety pounds.
I paid £99.
If you paid the full price you would certainly feel you'd been robbed.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the garden have a lovely outlook - but make sure you find a good price!!

This was a last minute booking made through the internet. The booking was handled professionally. The reception desk was welcoming, knowledgeable as well as being efficient in organizing services and outlining facilities on offer. It was, however, a long trek to the room which I suppose was fitting for an old medieval Inn with a history of extensions. The room was large, clean and well provided with useful furniture although this was rather dated.

The dining room was modern and service good. The menu on offer was suitably varied and well presented. The dining room opened out onto a terrace and river, but thick fog hindered what would have been a good and relaxing view. Thee downside was the price of drinks which were, putting it mildly, rather steep. The up side was good parking facilities within the hotel's curtilage.

The Hotel is in a village just over the river from Salisbury and 10 minutes walk to the old medieval city. The village itself was rather sparse for alternative eating venues.

Stayed here for a 2 night break. Hotel is In a good position to visit Salisbury. A ten minute walk through the Cathedral grounds and you are in the town. From the time we arrived we were made very welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. We had room 7 which is in the old part of the hotel. Not the best view but very quiet and the room itself was lovely. We ate there both nights and enjoyed the food. Continental breakfast fine for me but cooked selection limited and expensive. It would be better if they offered a choose your own breakfast items selection. View from the restaurant was lovely even though it rained for most of our visit. Thank you yo everyone for making our stay lovely
