We stayed at the hotel for two nights with two other couples. When I arrived no one offered to show me to our room ("it's down the corridor zig-zag around a bit and you'll find it up some stairs"). In fact, throughout our stay, the staff behaved as if they were doing us a favour in allowing us to stay at the hotel. We had a new-ish room (both sets of friends said their rooms were poor). Walking in, it was evident that the carpet had not been cleaned properly. The room was hot, but there was no air-conditioning. Great view of the river, in a very tired building. We paid £160 per night (outrageously expensive for what it is), but were asked if we wanted to 'upgrade' to a 'full' breakfast. Saturday breakfast was brought to an end by a fire practice. When our friends arrived ten minutes late for breakfast on Sunday morning (i.e. at 9.40), they were told no, there was no breakfast available (apparently, what had been left had been "thrown away"), but that they could pay for some brunch.
I thought this type of hotel service was left behing in the 1970s. But no - it is alive and well in Salisbury.More
