Private parking- check. Good location - check. Excellent rooms - check. Arrived on Sat afternoon and place was deserted. However guy in reception named Allcock (no joke, girlfriend v impressed) was very professional and efficient. We managed to get an Exec room for £60 less than other sites through lastminute which was unexpected. All other sites on tripad had exec rooms for £140 but we got £80. Exec room had massive bed, big flat panel TV and crazy strong shower. Newly renovated - we were v happy. For some reason people upstairs were jumping around and wouldn't expect noise to travel but it did. Not enough to put us off though. Sunday breakfast finishes early at 9:30 which is lame. That said food was good and in fact tall young blonde waitress seemed almost too good to be working there. Very professional and courteous. Would have expected to meet her in Lanesborough hotel in London or something. Didn't stay long enough to get any feel of the atmosphere in hotel but if you want a very nice room within walking distance to city centre next to tranquil river, this is the place for you.

We spent just one night in the Rose & Crown for my birthday in November. We booked a superior room facing the river. Lovely location with a fab view of the cathedral just 10 mins walk away, I can only imagine that it's just stunning in summer with the sun shining, a drink in hand, sitting in the garden right by the river. Each of the garden rooms has it's own terrace and you can order room service on there if you wish.

Being winter it seemed to be quite quiet and we had to ask for the bar near reception to be opened for us to get a drink. Front desk staff were courteous, helpful and swift.

The room itself was extremely spacious and spotless, with robes, slippers and a widescreen TV. We did have to ring down to reception for our robes/slippers but they were bought to us within a couple of minutes.

We ordered breakfast in our room, very reasonably priced from what I recall compared to some surchages at hotels we have stayed in.

Absolutely no complaints here :-)

Spent two night break over new year at Rose and Crown and wasn't disappointed. Had room in 'new' wing. Rooms set in crescent with lovely views overlooking the garden, River Avon, meadows and the cathedral spire. Room was large and well appointed with all the usual features including tea/coffee making facilities. Reception staff friendly.

Went into Salisbury Cathedral that afternoon and its lovely. In fact the whole area is full of history. Restaurant was closed that night so instead of going into town, we ate in the bar and the food was fine.

Salisbury is a lovely city with very friendly people and only a 10 minute stroll from the hotel to the main shopping area As well as the standard high street fare, there are also some very quirky shops and a good market.

New year's eve dinner was of a very good standard and the evening went well and the 'Scottish' themed evening was entertaining to say the least. Peter, the manager was in attendance all evening to make sure the event ran smoothly and Jenny Shearing looked after us very well on both evenings.

Breakfast both mornings was ample. We had the 'full English' and there was also an a'la carte menu which contained all you would expect.

On arriving home, I realised I had left our phone chargers at the hotel and they were posted on and received within the week.

All in all, a very good stay and we have no hesitation in recommending the Rose and Crown.

You couldn't ask for a better location, close to the Cathedral and Town Centre. Has a beautiful position on the river with lovely outlooks. However the cost of drinks is outrageouse. A single whiskey is over £3 and then you are charged £1.80 for a small bottle of coke or lemonade (they don't do shots) We bought 4 drinks, 2 pints a rum and coke and a neat whiskey and the cost was over £14!!!

The food in the restaurant is also overpriced for what it is at £25.50 for a 3 course meal that has to be preordered at breakfast. The meal was O.K. but nothing special. It is such a shame that a possibly brilliant hotel is being let down.

Nice hotel, ok location (within 10 minutes walk of city centre). However the service was disappointing. We booked a package which included evening meal, breakfast and a complimentary bottle of wine in the room. When we got to the hotel on Friday evening we were met by a rather indifferent guy on reception, who couldn't seem to muster a 'welcome' or 'how was your journey' or anything similar by way of greeting. we then went up to the room, which was clean but had none of the olde worlde charm that you might expect given the rest of the hotel's historic character. There was no bottle of wine either. We mentioned this to the reception person who said we should get one from the bar.... which was where we had to eat because the restaurant - on a Friday night - was closed!

Food was ok but certainly nothing special.

On Saturday evening we were informed by a call from reception that if we wanted to eat in the hotel that evening we'd have to be finished by 8pm as they had lots of people coming....! I felt that was really rude, and was pretty clear to us that the all inclusive package was not the sort of thing the hotel was focused on.

Finally to top it all we were woken at 7.00 on Sunday morning by the fire alarm, which apparently goes off if smoke from the open fire wafts back into the room.

All in all I wouldn't recommend this hotel which though nice should really work on its customer service.

What can I say........this hotel is how you would wish every hotel that you stay in to be like.
Reception staff were so genuinely friendly and helpful. They gave advice on where to go in the town etc. The room was fantastic...modern and spotlessly clean. It had double doors leading out into a beautiful garden at the side of the river. The view across the river was that of the floodlit cathederal. It really was fantastic. Breakfast excellent as was the atmosphere in the bar. If ever I an in Salisbury I would have no hesitation in returning.......I would reaklly look forward to it. This place has a special vibe that is very difficult to replicate.

We stayed for 3 nights amidst the coldest weather on record in this part of the world. The staff were friendly and helpful and without being intrusive or obsessively obsequious ensured that eveything we needed was available.

The warm and comfortable room was in the old part of the hotel, with genuine wooden beams and a high ceiling. We loved its appearance and character. The bathroom was fully tiled, well appointed and very comfortable, although , in the manner of the bedroom, the floor and walls were not quite flat/level - which we found added immeasurably to the charm and the genuine 'olde worlde' atmosphere. The one slight defect was that the room fronted the main road, and there was no double glazing. However, the main road in Harnham is not exactly congested, and we slept well.

The sense of history was heightened by the old carved wooden chests and settles in some rooms and corridors, the display of mantraps along one of the walls, and by the open fire in the 'Oak Bar'.

The breakfast/dining area was right on the banks of the Avon and opposite the Cathedral Close, with views of the spire through the leafless trees. The buffet breakfast offered an adequate choice, with fruit, ceral, cheese, eggs, cold meats, bread and croissants. A full English breakfast was also available. Evening meals also provided a reasonable choice of traditional British food in very good quantities (for an English palate at least).

Best of all, we could stroll into the city centre via the Cathedral Close in less than ten minutes and our car remained in the car park for nearly the whole of our stay.

Thanks, Rose and Crown. We intend to return!
