Best Western Red Lion Hotel
Ranked #10 of 16 Hotels in Salisbury
Reviewed 22 July 2012

We stayed for three nights in July and enjoyed the experience very much, as far as the courtyard, the uniquely decorated rooms, and the general atmosphere and ambiance. Sure, it's a creaky old building that's not the most soundproof in the world but I'm not sure what else someone would expect when booking a stay in a historic English hotel that's close to 1,000 years old.

Staff were very friendly and it's just a short walk from the bus station and close enough to Salisbury Cathedral and shopping.

Our only major complaint was the food, as breakfast was pretty abysmal and very overpriced given the mouse-size portions. Greengages Cafe is just around the corner and a far better choice for both breakfast and dinner.

We'd definitely stay here again and don't be put off by some of the more negative reviews; if you're expecting a "modern" Best Western you might be disappointed but if you're looking for a bed and breakfast style experience you'll likely be very happy staying here.

Stopped for lunch whilst visiting the cathedral.
Nice sunny courtyard - you expect a bit of a wait when food is freshly cooked, but this was perhaps longer than you would want. Had finished my large glass of wine with time to spare before food made an appearance.
My husband's Moules and Frites were child size portions, and my handmade burger went straight back to the kitchen as the toasted bun had seen more heat than the burger which was completely raw and ice cold.
Not wanting to spend another 40 mins waiting for them to cook something else I opted for a sandwich - which arrived in seconds, but was nothing spectacular.
The bill came to £34! and needed a polite reminder that my meal had been sent back untouched before the bill was amended.

Restaraunt is overpriced and £10 for the late small breakfast i received ridiculous (waited 25 mins for my breakfast)£18 for a small steak and chips unbelievable. Arrived to be told the six parking spaces the hotel had were full and I would need to park in a multi- storey and then told there were maintenance issues and they only had twin rooms left ( i had paid extra for a double bed). Got up in the morning and shower was not working. The wi- fi did not work at all in upstairs rooms. Coupled with this the corridors smelled musty and needed a good clean. Will not be returning

After staying here one night ( in my home town) three years ago for our Golden Wedding Anniversary and enjoying everything very much we returned yesterday with our son and his partner for a lunch in the lounge but am sorry to say that we were disappointed. After waiting almost an hour for our order, our guests meals appeared to be quite good but our two baked potatoes were incinerated and we had to ask for the apple chutney which should have been provided with one meal and there was no lemon for the smoked salmon. The staff were very nice and helpful, and as our guests seemed to be happy with their meal we didn't comment to the staff at the time. I also noticed that more attention should be paid to cleaning ledges, (mentioned by another reviewer.)
On returning home and thinking about our experience it might be helpful for other people if we comment on our visit. Next time we will choose another venue!

Only stayed for 1 night on business, but a pleasant stay all round and good value when compared with some other hotels i have stayed in recently.
Arrived relatively late so didn't fancy the restaurant, but had supper in the bar which was very good quality.
A pleasant nights sleep and did not experience any of the noise refered to by other reviewers, although I was staying midweek.
Breakfast was also of good quality, cooked to order and well served.
The hotel is in the centre of the town, so a great location for looking around Salisbury (which was much bigger than i had imagined). When next in Salisbury, this will be my first choice of hotel.

Our room was just above the night club across the road. All that separates you from the noise of the drunks on the street is a single pane of glass and even that was cracked. There are in fact a lot of rooms in the hotel facing this road. The nightclub quietens down at 3:30am...

If it wasn't for that it would have been fine.

Stayed one night free via my rewards points. Had a lovely room [21] although a little noisy due to the kitchen extractor fan, the room was lovely with some original beams and wonky floor which made it very cosy.
Bathroom was of a good size and had a corner bath with shower over.
The biggest let down was the food, due to the poor weather we booked a table in the restaurant [had planned to go to a nearby Thai] Starters where fine but we both ordered sirloin steak, for £16.95 you received an 8oz steak, chips, peas, half a flat mushroom and 1 onion ring. well one steak came out fine the other was underdone and consisted of approx' 45/50 % fat,
No body asked us at any stage how our meal was, so when the waitress collected the plates we informed her of the problem, she then went and got the assistant restaurant manager, Adam, He decided to argue with me and insisted that the steak had 'very little' fat on it, so I asked him to get the remains of it from the kitchen so I could show his manager, about 5 minutes later the manager arrived to apologise. This was accepted and we informed him that we would not be paying for the steak. This then followed by the chef coming out to also chat about the issue with us, all to much really for a bad steak.
Breakfast was also a shambles with luke warm full english which also consisted of have a slice of black pudding each?
So enjoy the lovely hotel and lounge areas including the bar but avoid the food, there are plenty of places to eat in Salisbury.
