“Like Barbara Cartland's boudoir”
Reviewed 11 February 2014

Recent overnight stop at this quaint old inn.
A (once) Very grand reception area and public spaces full of old people sucking at their teas as we arrived. We did chuckle at the look of it.
Polite and efficient check-in then the complicated bit, finding our room in this quirky maze of a building.
Opened the door and had to laugh at the décor... Bold floral print everywhere matched with a pink pinstripe and it was everywhere, curtains swags, pelmets & bedding. Like Barbara Cartland's boudoir indeed.
Ok seriously, not our taste but serviceable and functional enough for a short stay and I'm sure it had looked quite plush in its day. We assume it will be updated in due course? but as we had a budget room deal perhaps this was one of the last.
I agree with other reviewers its time some money was spent all over the hotel to justify their list prices. But its the hotels Location that really sells it and ironically too, one of its worst downfalls.
Our room did not face the front street with the tacky Nightclubs but the side street where we could clearly hear the din from their 'clientèle' until about 03:30! Our room (No74) was in a 1970's block with double glazing too!
We returned reasonably early (about 23:25) to find sordid urban chaos* outside the now Bolted main gate and were relieved to be quickly let in on ringing the night porters bell.
Breakfast was very civilised but service a bit patchy as we often had to catch a passing waiter/ess to remind them of something missing. Why bring toast without butter or a coffee pot without milk?.
Overall a passable stay in the centre of town but perhaps best on a week day and definitely arrive by train as parking anywhere is awkward and expensive.

(*Cackling Hens, fighting Lads, Police and street Pastors milling about, ALL Not hotel's fault of course but quite intimidating to walk through)

Room Tip: Away from front AND side streets

We often call in here for a drink after shopping in Salisbury but on this particular day decided to have a late lunch. I didn't find them menu very interesting and they didnt have my first choice so decided to have a steak served with vine tomatoes and chips cooked several times, as did my husband. The 9 or so, cooked several times chunky chips where stacked very nicely on the plate (Jenga style) along with the vine tomatoes and steak. Unfortunately It would seem that they paid more attention to the chips rather than the steak, my husbands rare and my medium rare steaks were completely overdone, in fact it's one of the worst steaks we have ever had.

Lovely hotel. Nice and quiet. Everything good and particularly liked having a lounge where I could eat and get a drink as a women on my own felt comfortable there. Was so nice to have breakfast cooked fresh rather than ruining on the buffet. Although there was still a continental buffet of fruits cereals etc if you wanted it. The scrambled eggs were the best I have ever had.

Very disappointed with the afternoon tea that we experienced, quality not great, I do not expect or want pizza slices with an afternoon tea at the expense of the sandwiches which you did not even get a full round and sadly cakes padded out with croissants. We where told the scones where cheese when they where not and we then had to ask for jam & clotted cream to go with them. Poor quality and have to say that the lounge is a very tired and depressing place to have afternoon tea.

Nice little hotel, bags of charm and really friendly staff. The hotel is an old coaching house and looks like it was built in the 1700's, as such the floor are very creaky and any late night people passing by your room may keep you awake. However, highly recommended as a classic piece of old England.

Was here for the week for business. Hotel was nice and comfortable. Breakfast had a good choice of continental, full English, or some other choices such as smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. I had room service one night and the steak was good, although the amount of food was quite small for the price.

Overall very pleasant, and in a good location. I will go back if here again.
