Very nicely located in central Salisbury. Salisbury Cathedral is just 2 blocks away. Clean and quaint with roomy rooms. Part of the hotel is air conditioned, the other is not. This could be a real issue in the summer (it was for us). We were able to open the windows and were given a desk fan. These helped, but those sensitive to hot and traveling during the summer months may want to specifically request an air conditioned room. Very nice staff.

If you are traveling with a large group and planning to have a group meal here, I suggest that you confirm that enough serving staff will be scheduled to address your expectations. We overwhelmed the nice and hard working staff members on our last morning there.

Room Tip: Some areas of the hotel are air conditioned, others not. Be aware of this if you make summer reserva...

Great location but well overpriced.
We visited this hotel in August 2014 for 2 nights, Check-in was efficient and the front desk girl was helpful enough although a smile could have made a difference.
We had to pay £15 per day to park in their car park which was very tight to park as the spaces were very small so if your have a large car beware of this.
The room was very small and look very dated as did the bathroom, looks like the place could do with a refurbishment.
Our room faced the courtyard and late at night you could hear noise in the hallway and in the courtyard were customers were having drinks.
We went to breakfast and were pointed to a table by a waitress and told that there is a continental buffet breakfast and to help ourselves. She did not offer us tea or coffee and did not mention anything about the cooked breakfast that could be ordered. It looked as if they very busy and had no time for you so we asked if it was possible to order a cooked breakfast and coffee, and it was ok.
The only good thing about the hotel is the location.

The front desk staff went out of their way to help us find our way around town and to find a hotel in London, our next stop. The hotel is old and historic and it was a fun place to stay. The location is excellent, close to the Market Square. Our room overlooked a busy street with traffic all night long, so I would recommend asking for a room off the street. The breakfast is extra but it was good. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the street. Street noise is very loud.

This Hotel has history overflowing, its a great location, so interesting but time has taken its toll on the building. So image my excitement to see this beautiful building being transformed and allowed to shine again. Paint, flooring and a lot of love and care is going into making this potential No 1 place to stay in Salisbury. That is why I chose the hotel for my big birthday bash. The Catering was outstanding, the service second to none, always there in the background to service but not suffocate. It is a Hotel in the centre of Salisbury so expect to be drawn into the experience, there are lovely quiet areas to relax, or vibrant areas to join in. Congratulations Red Lion you are looking great for you age!

Room Tip: Maybe towards the back of the hotel - but the rooms are being updated as I type this.

We have been going to the Red Lion for Saturday lunch now and again for some years, with up to 5 of us having lunch. The food & atmosphere have always been good. But now the lounge is like a railway station main hall - cold, unwelcoming, soul-less, and tiled. All the doors are left open so that staff can rush hither and thither without looking at the customers or offering much service, and it's very chilly at times. This week on our visit, the table tops were completely empty - no sign of menus there or on the bar. When we asked for them we were given just one between 5 of us, despite us being the only diners in the lounge. The food was OK, except fish & chips. There was hardly enough of it to fill a sandwich let alone a plate ! If they are going to halve the portions, how about halving the price. Will now have to find another eatery in town.

We spent one night and enjoyed seeing such a great old building. The lift had to be retrofitted into a building never designed for it... a very interesting ride.
Our room backed up on a side street and was quite noisy until after 11 PM. Breakfast was good.

My friend and I have just enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing lunch in the courtyard. Drinks cold, food just as requested (the staff very kindly combined two options for me) and latte hot and creamy. You would never know you were sitting in the centre of Salisbury next to a road. The refurbishment of the hotel is almost done and has given it a sophisticated and updated feel, whilst still retaining its charm. I have found no Salisbury resident who is not delighted by the new cream entrance! The staff were attentive yet not overbearing and the service was smooth. Thank you Red Lion for a delightful afternoon, you're still one of the favourites in Salisbury!
